A Guide to DI

At first glance, Damage Inc seems a confusing sprawl. This thread seeks to ease your confusion and help you out. If you are a new poster to DI, you should read this thread first (second only to the rules, perhaps ;))

As you might be able to tell, DI isn't a typical 40k forum. Our focus is on role-playing and co-operative story-telling instead of the table-top game itself.

Most of our roleplays and stories take place in the Abraxis sector, an area of space heavily contested between chaos and Imperial forces. The battles for Abraxis provide us with a dramatic and colourful back-drop from which to write. Examining the many and varied characters participating in the way, from zealous Space Marines, Guardsmen, Inquisitors and more provides us with an endless source of material. Those characters, and their experiences, are what Damage Inc is truly about.

For more information on Abraxis, head [here].

A Description of Role-Playing

Types of Roleplay on DI
  • First-Person Roleplays (FPRPs)
If you've ever played an FPS shooter, you'll know what to expect. First-person roleplays might take the guise of a military squad on a mission, an Inquisitor and retinue conducting an investigation, or something similar. Each player controls one character throughout the course of the game, deciding what actions their character performs. It is generally seen as poor conduct to control other players' characters, or the environment.

There are variant FPRPs, where each player is given command of a small unit. For example, a starship captain or tank commander. In these it is usually acceptable to both create and control the people populating your environment.

  • Tactical Roleplays (TRPs)
The tactical roleplay is closest to table-top 40k. Usually focusing on a single battlefield, the players command a group of men roughly equivalent to a 40k army. Players are usually permitted to give orders to their men as well as writing the reactions of their character in a first-person style.

  • Strategic Roleplays (SRPs)
If a first-person roleplay is DOOM, then an SRP could be compared to Age of Empires or Risk. Games take place on large maps that encompass continents. Players take the role of military commanders, responsible for thousands of soldiers, tanks, artillery pieces and the like. Games last weeks of game-time as you follow your forces through a military campaign.

There are usually two types of SRP. One-sided, and two-sided. These are self-explanatory. In a one-sided SRP, the players command one force while the GM controls the other. In a two-sided SRP, there are players on both sides. The GM only determines the aftermath.

SRPs can cover both extremes. In Operation Aquila, players commanded one regiment of 6,000 men. Operation Solar Wind was dubbed an 'extreme strategic roleplay' (XSRP?) as each player commanded in excess of 100,000 men. The players' forces totalled over half a million guardsmen.
  • Asset Management/Question-Based Roleplays (AMRPs)
AMRPs are a new innovation for DI. We have had only two Asset-Management Roleplays. In one, players are students at an Imperial Navy academy. In the other, students at an Imperial Guard military school. As you might guess, the roleplays are structured around questions posed by the GM, who masquerades as a teacher or instructor and presents them with a hypothetical situation. The players submit their answers to the 'test'. Depending on the answers they give, their hypothetical realities alter and change, leading to suprising differences between players.
