Question 1

A Identify the primary and secondary objectives of an Imperial Guard force detailed to the area and how they may depend on your force composition. Explain your identification of objectives and priority given to them.

Primary Objective: Control of crossing places over the minor river. The reinforced bridge is the primary focus of this objective with a secondary consideration given to the wooden bridge. To help with this control the village of Ath and Hill 001 is a primary consideration. To control the wooden bridge would involve a smaller force capable of delaying any major enemy move until reinforcements can be sent.

Due to the river being a possible crossing point patrolling between both points is a must.

Secondary Objective: Prevent enemy from gaining control of a crossing point and denying them access to the southern bank.

B An Imperal Guard of force of motorised infantry is allocated to the area in the south. Traitor guard forces of mechanised infantry serving the archenemy have been spotted approaching from the east. Does this change your allocation of primary/secondary objectives. Why or why not?

Whether the enemy have appeared from the east south of the river or north of the river is of greater concern for the moment.

The forces of the archenemy if coming from the east north of the river stand to gain control of a crossing point very quickly and will necessitate the allocation of a greater force to contest control of the wooden bridge. In effect, swapping the garrisons of both objectives around.

If the archenemy have appeared to the south, they have already gained a crossing point elsewhere in which case, the objectives change to engaging the enemy and destroying them in the most expedient manner possible. Considering the equipment of the enemy force, any assault would have to be conducted either by luring the enemy into the woods or engaging them in another advantageous manner.

C The 1st Roselaire Light Infantry Company (1st RLIC), of 100 men, is presently deployed in the area to which you have just been assigned command. They are average quality troops, well rested in their encampment in grid D3, however they are underequipped, carrying even fewer heavy weapons than regular light infantry and without additional equipment or vehicles. Other than assignment to the area your have no specific orders but are warned of traitor guard movement to the north (how far south and with what forces they have come is unknown). Upon word of reinforcements arriving in one day what are your orders.

1st Platoon of 1 RLIC is to move out immediately and take control of the wooden bridge by setting up a platoon scale ambush. 2nd and 3rd Platoons will move immediately to control the village of Ath and the plascrete bridge, before digging in and awaiting further orders. All platoons are advised to main watch over the river through OPs or patrolling.

D You are allocated three (3) selections for your reinforcements with a maximum of one (1) vehicle choice. The list is available at The Office. What are your choices and why? They arrive ahead of schedule in grid D4 and can also act on the first day, what are your orders?

2 Leman Russ Tanks
1 AT Platoon
1 Mortar Platoon

Now to explain the choices:

The Leman Russ Tanks provide some hard hitting for this otherwise rather undergunned force. Tanks are tough and useful support for the infantry and can provide a useful complement to any assault or defence.

The AT platoon are the best way to provide an upgrade in ehavy weapons for the infantry company and will be split as required amongst the rifle platoons.

The Mortar platoon provides this force with an advantage the enemy may not have: night time illumination. The Mortar platoon also provides a light indirect fire capability to interdict and disrupt the enemy force whether in defence or in attack.

Question 2

A
If you sent forces to Ath in grid C1 they stop short seeing obvious surface laid AT mine on the road. Attempting to move around through the grass a scout screams as an AP mine in the grass destroys a leg and a brief shower of mortar fire from Ath wounds another soldier (ie, 2 WIA). Retreating a safe distance observation reveals surface laid AT mines on the bridge as well and harder to see AT & AP mines in the grass on the southern side. The extent of the minefield is unknown. Enemy in the village are estimated at below platoon strength. If you ordered patrols they will begin now. What are your orders for troops in grid C1?

Wait until nightfall before advancing and crossing the river on the western edge of the grid. Leman Russ Tanks will be allocated to provide support as will the Mortar Platoon. Once support elements arrive and night falls, the assault will be launched (upon successful crossing of the river) with direct and indirect fire support. Until then, send a small team to observe enemy positions.

B
If you sent forces into the forest in grid B3 a soldier breaks an ankle falling into a heavily overgrown trenchline from the earlier civil war (1 WIA). Investigation reveals an extensive trench system overlooking the river and a bunker with an estimated 20 tons of munitions in a dangerously decayed state. What are your orders for these troops?

Assuming that the trench system and bunker are seperate components. The bunker will be avoided and the trench system will be used to establish localised defensive positions.

C
If you sent forces to the wooden bridge they are able to establish good ambush positions south of the wooden bridge and report no enemy activity. If examination of the bridge was ordered it is declared suitable for soft vehicles, borderline for APCs and too weak for tanks but the light infantry lack equipment to easily change this. What are your orders for these forces?

Maintain amubush. Elemetns of the AT Platoon will be arriving to assist you.

D
Any requests for reinforcements are refused. Regardless of whether you made such a request you are informed that an air supply drop will occur in grid D3 tomorrow. Describe any preparations you feel necessary.

A section of infantry will be present.

E
Your selected platoons/vehicles have arrived in grid D4 and require orders.

1 squad of the AT Platoon is detached to G3, the remaining two squads head to the forces at C1. The tanks and mortar platoon do the same.

Question 3

AUnless you have a medical platoon casualties from the minefield require medical evacuation. Your forces pull back to cover/observe the bridge and are reinforced as the day wears on, confident that reinforcements are unnoticed. As night falls the river is crossed 3 km West of the bridge and the attack begins. Mortar and lasrifle fire is exchanged on both sides with Ath’s stone buildings systematically obliterated by battlecannon rounds, a spectacular secondary explosion denoting the loss of an enemy mortar position. Losses are relatively light until a ring of command detonated mines is detonated around the village with bloody results. This is a last gasp however and the village falls to Imperial hands shortly afterward with several POWs and a captured 81mm mortar. Enemy – 10 KIA, 11 WIA (captured), 3 POW. Friendly – 6 KIA, 9 WIA. What are your orders?

B1Forces at the wooden bridge in B4 observe an infantry section approach and begin to cross the bridge. As they begin to cross the bridge the infantry and recently arrived AT troops open fire dropping half the enemy instantly. The enemy quickly retreat with their wounded, covering fire hitting one soldier. Enemy – 4 KIA, 2 WIA; friendly – 1 WIA. Given this engagement what are your orders?

B2Soldiers in the trenches in B3 observe an enemy section begin looking for a river pass. Allowing them to cross most of the way they open fire killing two enemy in the river and driving the rest away without loss. Enemy – 2 KIA; Friendly – No losses. Given this engagement what are your orders?

CThe air supply drop is a partial success. Enemy fighters appear and force one transport off course before the fighter cover can intervene. Thus half of the supplies land in D3, the others on the wrong side of the river in B3. What are your orders?

DIn the late afternoon aerial recon photos are forwarded to your command. They show a large construction project, identified as a long range gun emplacement, under construction on Hill 001. Enemy numbers are unknown. You are ordered to take the hill and destroy the emplacement within 48 hours. What are your orders for the first 24 hours?

What are your orders?

Consolidate positions and treat wounded with platoon medics.

The captured mortar will be handed to the mortar platoon and any salvageable enemy equipment utilised for 2nd and 3rd Platoons.

Anti-tank mines are to be lifted from the road by carefully guarded prisoners and it is to be carefully checked for mines by closely guarded prisoners.

Battlefield interrogation of the prisoners are to yield information on the whereabouts of their minfefield and local forces.

A casualty evacuation request will be raised with higher command for our wounded. If this is not forthcoming then a Leman Russ will be brought in (once the road is cleared) to load the wounded onto with a platoon medic. This Leman Russ will serve as the evacuation vehicle.

2nd and 3rd Platoons will dig in around Ath, along with their attached AT support. The Mortar platoon will set up to support the infantry. The tanks will also be in position to support the infantry should they need it.

B1 Forces at the wooden bridge in B4 observe an infantry section approach and begin to cross the bridge.

Relocate the ambush further south immediately, but maintain an OP to watch the bridge from a different position. The wounded soldier will be stretchered back to the road either to be picked up higher evacuation chain or by our casualty evacuation vehicle.

B2 Soldiers in the trenches in B3 observe an enemy section begin looking for a river pass. Allowing them to cross most of the way they open fire killing two enemy in the river and driving the rest away without loss. Enemy – 2 KIA; Friendly – No losses. Given this engagement what are your orders?

Continue holding position, but launch a patrol along the river to watch for the enemy and engage should the situation prove to be advantageous.

C The air supply drop is a partial success. Enemy fighters appear and force one transport off course before the fighter cover can intervene. Thus half of the supplies land in D3, the others on the wrong side of the river in B3. What are your orders?

Find out what the supplies are and distribute them to 2nd and 3rd Platoons. The patrol from B3 will note the location of those supplies and see if they are salvageable. This does not mean that the supplies are actually salvaged!

D In the late afternoon aerial recon photos are forwarded to your command. They show a large construction project, identified as a long range gun emplacement, under construction on Hill 001. Enemy numbers are unknown. You are ordered to take the hill and destroy the emplacement within 48 hours. What are your orders for the first 24 hours?

Get a patrol from Ath up there during the night to map out the enemy positions, the best approaches and whether they're covered or not as well as enemy numbers. This patrol has the full support of all assets under the control of the company, including armour.

Question 4

A Requested medical evacuations are provided by ambulances driving in from D4. Morale improves somewhat to see the wounded being cared for appropriately. Enemy POWs are forced to clear the road and bridge of mines and clearly do not know what they are doing leading to a more distant escort. Wisely as although the road and bridge are cleared two of the three POWs are killed by setting off AT mines. The road clear forces move into and fortify Ath. Do you have further orders?

B Your interrogation identifies the 23rd Maaseik medium infantry company. Reported to be a standard medium infantry with an engineering platoon and light support elements. The POWs give a rough estimate of the minefield but did not lay it so cannot give accurate details. Enemy forces are reported as a supported engineering platoon on Hill 001 and a platoon of infantry operating somewhere to the East.

C Supplies in D3 consist of food, water, clean uniforms and some ammunition. Supplies over the river are spotted near the bank and reported as salvageable.

D Patrols report round the clock construction on Hill 001 with estimated enemy numbers at over a platoon. The only easy approach is via the gentler East slope however this appears well defended. Elsewhere they appear occupied with construction and their lights probably destroy their night vision. You have 24 hours to capture Hill 001. What are your orders?

Wisely as although the road and bridge are cleared two of the three POWs are killed by setting off AT mines. The road clear forces move into and fortify Ath. Do you have further orders?

Refer to the night-time assault for the majority of orders. However:

The POW is sent back with a guard on the Ambulances.

6 Section, 2nd Platoon and 3 Section, AT Platoon will be on full stand-to for the duration of the night-time assault against Hill 001.

During the day, troops are to dig in with a section of infantry guarding the bridge on the southern side.

The supplies are distributed accordingly.

1st Platoon is to mount a night operation to recover supplies over the river. They are to leave 1 Section to maintain the OP over the bridge and maintain the ambush. 1st Platoon is to replenish their supplies from the supplies if recovered.

Night-time assault.

The attached tanks combined with 2nd Platoon make a 'demonstration' directly to the east of Hill 001. They are the decoy to draw attention from the main assault launched by 3rd Platoon from the southern slope, supported by 1 and 2 sections of the AT Platoon and the entire complement of the mortar platoon.

Once 3rd Platoon and 1 and 2 Sections, AT Platoon are in position, the tanks and 2nd Platoon make their 'decoy move' by moving into the area to the East. At that point, the mortars begin a short and quick barrage of enemy positions to catch them in the open or while running to their positions. This quick barrage will be followed by a quick assault by 3rd Platoon under the supporting fire of the attached AT elements once the mortar barrage finishes.

As 3rd Platoon moves in, so does the tanks and 2nd Platoon. The tanks and infantry are there to give 3rd Platoon the support it requires. 3rd Platoon needs to get in close enough to rush the enemy defences to cut down on exposure in the open. Sending a couple of scouts forward to disable/turn around any command detonated mines will also be ordered.

Question 5

A Supplies over the river are recovered, however your troops reports the supply package had been opened and was incomplete, containing only food.

B The night assault on Hill 001 begins unauspiciously as a heavy weapon support team to the east takes out one tank with a lucky lascannon shot and heavy bolter fire pins down the infantry platoon with losses. However, the distraction is a success and as engineers scramble they face a hail of frag missiles, mortars and lasrifle fire and are largely cut apart before getting to the defences. With the assault pushed ahead mortar fire aids eastern engagement and Hill 001 falls quite quickly with losses fairly limited. The incomplete defence works are taken and a small HQ although only a lieutenant is taken alive. Enemy - 15 KIA; 20 KIA; 10 Captured. Friendly - 1 Tank, 5 KIA; 11 WIA. What are your orders after this engagement?

C As dawn arrives so do new orders. A reinforced mechanised infantry regiment has been asigned to the area and is taking over all operations. The CO requests a situation report, please provide one.

Question 5

A Supplies over the river are recovered, however your troops reports the supply package had been opened and was incomplete, containing only food.

This is indeed a shame and the tardy response from my command, means that the enemy are now in possession of extra ammunition and supplies. Imperial supplies. No excuse from me.

3rd Platoon and the remaining tank dig on the hill reinforced by 2 sections of the AT Platoon and the 1 section of the mortar platoon. 2nd Platoon and the remaining AT section are to dig in around Ath along with the remaining Mortar section. Wounded are to be evacuated via the higher chain of command. Prisoners are interrogated before being sent back by higher means. Command is asked to provide guards and a transport. The tank is also to be looked at to see if it is salvageable by higher command.

C As dawn arrives so do new orders. A reinforced mechanised infantry regiment has been asigned to the area and is taking over all operations. The CO requests a situation report, please provide one.

Enemy forces estimated at approximately company strength plus attachments. They have attempted to cross the river through the eastern woods in two areas but were turned back with light casualties. The enemy had defended the village of Ath and Hill 001 with three platoons of soldiers, one of which was an engineer platoon. The engineers were building a gun emplacement atop Hill 001.

Our forces have taken heavy casualties, but we have recaptured the village of Ath and the bridge from the enemy as well as the position of Hill 001. Several enemy prisoners were captured, and three enemy platoon strength units neutralised. There remains at least one enemy platoon with survivors from the destroyed units in the eastern section of the map, north of the river. They have gained supplies from an Imperial misdrop.

There is a minefield either side of the road leading to the Ath Bridge on the south side. There is a trench system that overlooks the river in the eastern woods as well as bunker filled with volatile explosives. The eastern bridge can only support the weight of an IFV at most.

Hill 001 and Ath have defences dug into them and have proven to be good areas to enscone our forces.
