The characters are drop troops in an unnamed battalion, on a night assault on an unknown planet against a human enemy (Chaos Guard). Currently they are securing Hill 501, somewhere in the dropzone. The unit is composed of seven fifty-man companies divided into two twenty-five-man platoons, one commanded by the company captain.

Characters (feel free to join in and expand)

Player: JenBurdoo
Name: Johann Stein
Rank: Captain
Unit: CO, Company A; CO, 2nd platoon, Company A
Notes: Seems confident, trusts in subordinates.

Player: Berzerker
Name: McArthur
Rank: Sergeant
Unit: CO, 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, Company A
Notes: Straightforward, leader mentality.

Player: Avenger2099
Name: Killroy
Rank: Trooper
Unit: 3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, Company A
Notes: A touch unlucky?

Player: Drakkar
Name: Breswood
Rank: Colonel
Unit: Battalion CO
Notes: Superstitious, cynical.

Properly, we all ought to be closer in rank (and thus all in the same tactical unit and able to interact), but we can remedy that next time (and do this characterbuilding part first like we should have in the first place!) tongue.gif
Anyone who wants to can join in as a trooper or noncom in A Company, just post and write about what your character is doing or thinking under the circumstances...

Killroy is in McArthurs squad Jen. Oh and I don't see why we would need to be close in rank, as long as there is still a viable way for us all to interact. Like right now the order of the command is, Drakkar tells you what to do, you tell Berserker, and then Berserker makes me go do it while he sits back and drinks a Guiness... bastard ^.^

so is this an rp or a colloborative story? i was thinking it was a little more free than tying our collective minds to one person.
but in that case, go ahead and put my guy in there jen.

It is a collaborative story.

Actually, Drak and Spartacus, it IS intended to be an RP. Which is why you're playing single characters. The difference is that rather than having a GM set the scene, we're doing that ourselves. It's freeform in that sense, but there is still a rough plot and an end goal for the characters (to take Hill 501).

so how would we handle, say, npc actions?
and if we are in fact in an rp, should i not play a villain?
i had assumed that since this was a colab story it would be intersting to get the other point of view. i mean, im not out to kill the imperials, ill play fairly even if it means my character dying, i really do care more about story than whatever jollies someone gets when their fictional character does well.

You're allowed to post NPC actions. Essentially, every player is a GM.

People playing the opposition is difficult because now we're essentially running two separate games. Your character will probably never see McArthur, or Stein, in person. He has an entirely different view of things, and he's working against us.

That said, it's manageable with 1 Chaos player, acting as a commander. Any more, and we will be playing two different games; one Chaos, and one Imperial. So keep the Chaos commitment down to just spartacus.

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"

i only did that because in many stories it will sometimes cut to the viewpoint of the villain, just trying to add some depth and not so can kill people.
hes not like uber commander either, odds are he will eventually meet the characters, maybe a few times. he doesnt have like a regiment of troops behind him, hes merely the captain of the local forces if you will, a company or two at best.

Perhaps the biggest problem with this story is that nobody seems to know where it's going. As this isn't a roleplay in the strictest sense, and surprise isn't necessarily the nature of the game, perhaps it's worthwhile working out some sort of plan, working out what'll happen - in that way, the players can work together.

Sounds good. Here are my thoughts, in order (I won't say anything specific about other characters);

-McArthur fights the chaos sergeant, wins but is wounded.
-Stein's troops arrive to help McArthur's troops fight off the attack.
-The Chaos attack is repulsed, but with heavy casualties.
-Fox Company arrives, too late to help.
*possible other events*
-Airborne troops arrive.
*more combat*
-A second landing is made, more troops come down and fortify the position, unless our characters have been driven off the hill. In that case, a desperate, sprawling firefight erupts throughout the town and woods.
-Higher-ups finally authorize air cover; fighters and bombers arrive and are engaged by traitor air units. Dogfighting erupts over our heads.

People, there's no reason this should sit around for five days. It takes very little time to post.

OK, as per Molotov's suggestion (and he's right), here's a rough plot -- my plan for it anyway, your mileage may vary. I'll make you aware from the start that I just spent the week reading A Bridge Too Far. tongue.gif

- The regiment has been dropped ahead of an space-borne invasion force, at night, the expectation being that it will take no more than half a day for the main force to drop (somewhere else), then to break through and relieve the drop troops. We are part diversion and part blocking force, cutting off a route that leads to the REAL dropzone elsewhere on the planet.

- It will take longer. The goal at this point is for the survivors of Stein's Able Company (whether relieved by Fox or not) to hold out until the big units arrive, which may be tonight or tomorrow (ie, two to three times as long as expected). The LZ was 'hot,' and is still not secured. The result is that the company will soon be fighting with reduced ammo and water against really PO'ed Chaos troops who appear to have more up their sleeves than expected.

- Gamewise, we fight off this attack, Fox joins us (it's up to us exactly when they show up), and we sweat out the rest of the day, perhaps developing our characters as they fulminate over the fact that their own side hasn't seen fit to relieve them yet.

- Once the cavalry arrives (again, timing is up to us) the game ends for now and we formally decide how it went, what changes should be made (I'm already making a list) and whether we want to try it again.

So, it looks like no-one else is interested in this anymore?

Right, but I'm sure everybody else is still doing something.
