Alright, I'll try to build a wall of text to match China. Beware, it gets deep

Finding Newgrounds.

I saw this site in 2000, when my brother showed me it. It was incredibly different from the way it is now, and since my bro used it for some not so kid-friendly, but still funny stuff, we we banned from the internet. If you're curious of what it was, I can remember a couple of them, one called buttplug, another with some guy and a leprechaun in a bathroom, and another with Dragonball Z's Vegeta sitting, constipated at a toilet. Some childhood, huh?

Well, eventually 2004, a friend of mine found a website called Flasharchives.com (it's no longer here, much to my dismay) that contained a cartoon called Madness Redeemer. We laughed, and I wanted to see more of the series. He told us simply, that there were more. I went to addictingGames.com to see more, and I did. It might have taken 3 hours to load one movie on our dial-up, but I finally saw them. Then, it shows a preview of a new madness flash coming out called Madness Apotheosis. I browsed around for it and found Newgrounds again, thinking I've heard of it before, but I wasn't sure.

I used Newgrounds a lot to see if there were new madness movies out, but it wasn't up until 07' that I signed up, wanting to be notified when flash artists came out with new movies. That's when I came across Buttplug, which jogged my memory of my brother, parents argument, so on, so on. It was scarring to say the least.

So, I found Newgrounds, B/pd for a bit, and notably later joined the BBS, looking for help.

Life On Newgrounds

I used a program called Liveswif to create my early flash. This is what made me realize that Newgrounds' users don't care about helping me, everything is a statistic with them, B/Ping, Reviewing, and posting. But, one person, one reviewer, changed all that. He tried to help me, unlike the others putting me down. He knew his review was going to be blammed with my submission, but he didn't care. That, forever changed me, making me improve my flashwork (never submitted half the stuff due to LS issues) and passing on the tradition of helping new artists without the statistic mattering.

so I joined the NGDD which was supposed to help new flash artists, BBS posters, and others out, but it failed to meet that goal. They cared about the stats, and it disgusted me. I tried to change them using every method in the book, but it didn't work. The irony of it all is, I now realized I've changed. I no longer help aspiring flash artists with my blammed reviews and pms-they don't count for a Newgrounds statistic after all. Nor do I help struggling BBS posters-They might be spammers and trolls looking for attention after all. The others, why bother, it wont help them after all.
In The End, we've all changed into the definition of a Statwhore. I will help make Newgrounds a better place, but it must count on my whistle, rank, and level; all of which don't even exist.
How did this happen?

I can sympathize with your views on the BBS, and your response to those who do nothing more than spam the site or knock you down because you don't have the skill set they do. It's very disheartening to work days and days on something, post it, and then have a bunch of knucklehead 14 year-olds telling you "it suxxored" and "n00b go homez". You don't want to do any more after that.

If you look at my profile, I have been on NG 3 years - and haven't submitted one flash yet. But I have done plenty of work in flash. Why haven't I posted? Because everything I've done so far has been "utilitarian" flashes for websites , like slide show managers, glorified menus, overlay animations based on data content. Nothing that tells a story, and nothing that would please the 14 - to 16 year old crowd looking for a 10 minute long flash full of blood, guts, action, sound effects and medals.

But this doesn't stop me from doing other things that I'm good at. I have a long background in the computer field, and when I see a question in a forum that (1) I can answer intelligently that will be helpful and (2) no one else has answered it yet, then I'll toss in my opinion. I also am on the lookout for flaggable reviews and flashes, and vote 0 on the spam, even if I know it will probably be protected (although possibly deleted later by the Fulp). I do what I know is right, and by my actions, define myself and set an example for others.

I'm a big girl now, and I have learned to ignore the whines of spoiled children, or the empty words and opinions of those who have no basis for what they say. I won't go looking for trouble - but I'll never back down if I'm right.

Recently, I have become more active on NG in ways I would never have thought: I am now in charge of the NG Logs site (www.nglogs.com) and I am also working in a collaboration effort with Corky52, Puddinn64, SlntCobra and others to create an EGB-based flash. My part is the sprite animation, and I am now working on original sprites and character sets for the flash. I was going to rip some sprites from sprite sheets - but then I decided that anyone can do that. So I am now going to do them from scratch. I can take what I do, and then go a bit beyond, and use my talents to help out on the collab. It'll be fun - and when it's done, it could be blammed in 10 seconds - or make front page. Who knows - but the key thing is that we did something, and if it wasn't perfect, well, we can always go back and try something else.

As for you, you're too young to be cynical just yet. Don't be afraid to lend a hand or speak your mind, but do it rationally and maturely. You might get flamed or yelled at sometimes for sticking your neck out, but so what? A person who has never failed is someone who has never tried.

So do your best, contribute whatever you can whenever you can, and who cares what the kiddies say - it's not about them - it's about you!
