Instructions for new members

Just reply to this thread twice with anything. It doesn't matter if it's "Post 1" and "Post 2" - I don't care. That should prove that you're a real human. Feel free to double-post if necessary.

After you do that, you will be able to access the rest of the board like normal.

I hope that this will prevent spam bots from posting yucky stuff. New members can't start their own threads here, which may confuse most of the botters.

Here's the real idea behind this section. What it is meant to do is confuse spambot spammers. The way I understand it, they're programmed to look for the most populated part of the forum and spam there. What'll happen when they register is that most of the forum vanishes, which will *hopefully* confuse the spambot spammer and force it to give up. Should it attempt to post in this section, it will start by trying to open up a new thread. If that fails, they'll have to then look for open threads in which to reply.

Most spambot programs aren't developed with this high of a tolerance to roadblocks. However, if you're a human, it's very simple. I've even removed flood control for the 'new' members. They'll automatically be promoted to a full member after their 2nd post, then they'll see the rest of the forum.

Remember that these are all automated. If the spammer has to manually come in and dish out the damage, the incentive is greatly reduced. I hope that my way will work, too, since it's a very uncommon way of dealing with this.

The warn system was hypothetically always there. I think I adjusted a setting that made it so that users could see their own warn levels. I don't know why it wasn't set that way before, but it is now. Nobody's been warned yet... well... except perhaps for an occasional spambotter.

By the way, moderators have the ability to ban members... in a sense. It doesn't put them into the banned members category - that's something I have to manually fix.
