Title: 1961
Description: Yet more musclemen

mattblake - February 14, 2006 02:28 PM (GMT)
There was another rise in the number of productions this year, from 206 to 228. Of these, there were 7 TV productions, 30 were documentaries (a considerable increase), 6 were shorts and 1 was animation, leaving a grand total of 191. This translates into a rise of just over 8% from the previous year..

Co Productions
If we take these 191 'feature films', 100 (53%) were international co-productions. This is almost exactly the same as the previous year. The breakdown by country was:
Argentina 1 (<1%)
Brazil 1 (<1%)
France 85 (44%)
Japan 1 (<1%)
Russia 1 (<1%)
Spain 10 (5%)
UK 1 (<1%)
US 7 (4%)
Venezuela 1 (<1%)
West Germany 8 (4%)
Yugoslavia 5 (3%)
France is still by far the major investor in Italian films, and most of these were purely Italo-French productions (whereas the German and Yugoslavian money tended to go into films financed in more than two countries).
As to what kind of films were being produced domestically and internationally... well, historical adventures and peplums tended to have a lot of international involvement (virtually all the co productions with Yugoslavia and half of the ones with the US were peplums, about a third of French co productions were Peplums or Historical Adventures.

Genres
Genre breakdown - given that there's a considerable amount of blurriness around the borders - was as follows:
Children: 3 (1%)
Comedy: 56 (29%)
Crime: 6 (3%)
Drama: 34 (18%)
Historical Adventure: 24 (13%)
Historical Drama: 3 (2%)
Musical: 4 (2%)
Peplum: 37 (19%)
Sci Fi: 2 (1%)
Thriller / Giallo: 4 (2%)
War: 7 (4%)
Western 1 (>1%)
Main thing to notice about this is that the numbers of both historical adventures and peplums have increased quite significantly - together they make up about 42% of all feature films made, a considerable amount (and a considerable increase from the previous year, when it was roughly a quarter). beyond that there are still lots of comedies being made (including a significant amoutn of music / youth / beach type things) and dramas, but no other genres seem to have taken off... even the number of horror films has taken a nosedive to zero. For now.

Directors
Top director was the ceaseless Marino Girolami, who came in with a whopping 7 films. That's over a film every other month. All of them were comedies, and he obviously had a smoothly running producution line up and running (with actors like Walter Chiari, Valeria Fabrizi and Enio Girolami appearing regularly). Ermanno Olmi was also busy, making six documentaries and a drama. Giorgio Simonelli was still churning out the comedies (4 of them), while Domenico Paolella, Riccardo Freda and Carlo Bragaglia each made three peplums / historical adventures. A special note also for Sergio Corbucci, who genre skipped by making a couple of peplums and a couple of comedies.

Stars
From a comedy perspective, Walter Chiari and Ugo Tognazzi were both extremely busy. Steve Reeves was the action star de rigeur, but a lot of sub-Reeves' were coming through - American stars including Gordon Scott, Gordon Mitchell, Cameron Mitcell, Reg Park and Ed Fury. The female side of things saw the likes of Moira Orfei, Wandisa Guida and Chelo Alonso appearing in many peplums and adventures.

I'll search through old files for whatever I may still have on tap (running dry on the film-by-film analyses, year by year), but a few significant titles and trends to be noted:

Sci-Fi: always an also-ran as pop-genre, behind Horror and way behind Peplum, and, later, Crime, Giallo, Erotica, etc. Nonetheless, Margheriti's Il Pianeta degli uomini spenti ...aka Battle of the Worlds has to be highlighted as the very best of a small bunch this year and a sign of what's ahead, omni-genre-wide. This is arguably quite a bit better than same director's later a-go-go Diafanoidi series( Wild Planet, far and away best of the bunch, possibly excepted).

This is 'milestone film' the way Bava's early horror is, a new style suddenly arrived. The opening is perfect: guy and gal scientists enjoying the benefits of global warming in some Nordic hot spot, diving and gambolling in the surf to the accompaniment of theremin-supplemented lounge music. The conclusion with Claude Rains' Greyfriar's Bobby-like companion faithfully waiting for him gazing upon the planetarium-like heavens outside the window-box seat he's perched on is more moving a pop-epiphany than Spielberg has ever achieved. What happens in the middle is the full array of fifties-sci-fi-becoming-2001 possibilities tried on for size. I endorse this film without hesitation!

1961 is also the year of Accattone, Pasolini's debut, and a very strong one. He'd been the cheerleader behind the scenes guiding a new sort of independent cinema for several years already, and he made the most of his first chance. This is crucial viewing for fans of Scorsese and Cassavetes, Catholic wiseguy dynamics as shot from the hip fully explored. Mean Streets could not exist without this. It gets dragged down in Fellini-esque Female-purity-symbol type allegory toward the end, but just notice the raw talent displayed with unprecedented rawness- as-an-intended-aesthetic-virtue, and the way forward to Sergio Leone and Spaghetti Western. Several key personnel on such later films defined modern grit here first, and it's no surprise that star Franco Citti found himself in a Western context later. Anti-hero is his patented shtick, and this was his anti-star moment.

Beyond these and Pirate titles worth a mention, it's chiefly Maciste, Maciste, Maciste!

Could someone more knowledgeable on the sum total of Pepla of 1961 help us out with a general overview or film by film analysis, or whatever in between your tastes and interests dictate and your time allows?

OK, a few comments about some of the films that I've seen... nothing too in depth I'm afraid and I'll leave out the better known stuff:

L'assassino. Elio Petri's first feature film, with Marcello Mastorianni as an arrogant young man who gets mixed up in a murder. Very effective, early fringe giallo. It's far less hysterical than Petri's later films, more obviously indebted to the nouvelle vague and neo realism.

Bellezze sulla spiaggia. Babes! Beaches! Bikinis! Rather fun comedy about a loony psychiatrist who comes to the conclusion that all psychological problems are caused by women being, well, women really. As a cure he organises a beach trip. Ok, it doesn't make any kind of sense, and it also features an enemy secret agent dressed in a gorilla costume, but what do you expect.

Goliath contro i giganti. Brad Harris battles ugly, fat giants. Good fun, directed by Guido Malatesta who was a pretty reliable filmmaker. What I remember most about this was an early appearence by Fernando Sancho.

Samson. Early Gianfranco Parolini peplum with Brad Harris (again) joining forces with Alan Steel to defeat the horrible Serge Gainsbourg. Decently done, but it lacks the fantastical elements which I personally like in my peplum.

Ulisse contro Ercole. Extemely cheap peplum, the first film from Mario Caiano. Mark Lane - who happens to be about the most wooden peplum star around - is a dumbass Hercules, dispatched by the Gods to capture Ulysses (Georges Marchal), who's allegedly insulted them in some obscure way. There are bird people, a tribe of troglodytes and so on. very entertaining, all told.

Vulcano, figlio di Giove. Another cheapjack, very entertaining film. I can't remember too much about it apart from lizard men running around (and getting beaten up, of course). Ermimmo Salvi was a succesful producer who became a very, very strange director (I'm a big fan of his films).

I've seen a load of other films from this year as well, but a surprising amount of them have simply slipped from my consciousness!

And we see Serio Leone,s debut with a amazing peplum Il colossi di rodi i have the 142 minute italian dvd and what a film it is.
Huge sets and in my eyes not a low budget peplum.
Maybe the biggest budget peplum of Italy?

Maciste nella terra di ciclopi, nice film but a very bad print source was used for this dvd, some of the fight scenes with the cyclops at the end of the film where re used a year later in Riccardo Freda,s Maciste all inferno.

Ercole al centro della terra,Mario Bava,s first colour film and he used the colours very well in this movie with very atmospheric scenes.
Christopher Lee was great in this movie.
Maybe the best peplum from Italy.

Giallo/ (Kafkaesque)Comedy/Marcello Mastroianni and Salvo Randone Vehicle/Elio Petri Debut; smooth, droll, very worldly and modern, slightly sinister hint of things to come…from Petri and from the Giallo. Deserves the ‘first Giallo’ title as much as Bava’s oft-touted Girl Who Knew Too Much. So do a few other films from round about this time, chiefly Germi’s Facts of the Murder. All are well worth a look.

12. Attendenti, Gli (1961)
...aka Orderly, The (1961) (International: English title)
Comedy/Romance/ “Commedia della Costume”/De Sica, Renato Rascel, Dorian Gray, Gino Cervi/Giorgio Bianchi Film. Summary by Baldanetto da Pistoia at imdb:
“Colonels, majors, lieutenants: all of them live in the same building. Some of them have a wife or children or none, but everyone has his orderly. Major Penna is harassed by Osvaldo's mother. Lt. Martucci gets involved in the love affair between Antonio, his orderly, and Lauretta. De Acutis, Colonel Terenzi's orderly, falls in love with Valeria, the daughter of the retired Colonel Bitossi. Different stories about orderlies and their officers taking place in Rome.”

...aka Taste of Violence, The (1961)
Adventure/Banana Republic/Dictator and Rebels/Romance/Proto-Western/Robert Hossein, Giovanna Ralli and Mario Adorf/French-Italian-German Coproduction/Dyaliscope/Robert Hossein Film. Primarily French but of historical interest here as an early (non-comedy) western-like film with folks who would ride again. This appears to combine elements from fifties films set in corrupt Latin American regimes with insurrection in the air...and American western plots. Guerillas kidnap the dictator’s daughter and head into the jungle. The rebel leader and the girl fall in love. His underlings have other plans for her. Can love conquer all? (Gleaning my info from the All-Movie Guide: for their version of the same: http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/movie.html?v_id=152347

21. Imprevisto, L' (1961)
...aka Imprévu, L' (1961) (France)
...aka Unexpected (1961) (International: English title)
Crime Drama/Psychological Drama/Adaptation/Tomas Milian, Anouk Aimee/Italian-French Coproduction/Alberto Lattuada Film. Very interesting early role for Milian as man-above-suspicion masterminding a grandiose perfect crime. He’s very much the Gian Maria Volonte Faccia a Faccia persona as an anonymous school teacher and societal worm who suddenly turns, engineering the kidnapping of a (lovely) female student, with complicity of beautiful wife Anouk and kidnappee alike, leading to romantic complications beyond the ethical and practical kinds. Apparently relatively stage-bound as befits the theatrical source, but of greatest fan interest, I’d think

Excellent Bava proto-Spaghetti Western featuring Vikings and Cameron Mitchell

22. Io bacio... tu baci (1961)
Musical/Comedy/ Mina and musical friends vehicle/Vespas/Piero Vivarelli Film; the usual rock and roll film ‘let’s put on a show’ plot, made worthwhile by many good and/or cheesy pop presentations, especially those from featured actress Mina and guest star Adriano Celentano; the ‘mod’ aesthetic (motor scooters and smartly dressed kids on them scooting round the bomb crater suburbs of Rome) is also a plus.

23. Italia '61 (1961)
Documentary/Italy-Usa Coproduction/Disney Circarama Travelogue/Jan Lenica Film. Imdb decription: “This early Disney Circarama (Circle-Vision) 360-degree film took audiences at the 1961 Exposition in Turin on a tour of Italy. Vita difficile, Una (1961) 9.0/10 (86 votes)
...aka Difficult Life, A (1961) (International: English title)
Drama/Comedy/War/Dolce Vita/Peplum Episode/Alberto Sordi and Lea Massari/Dino Risi Film. A classic, Risi’s best along with Il Sorpasso, a chronicle of Italian life from partisan war days to 1961 present, this is a cornucopia from which sixties Italian film pleasures of every variety flow…including a peplum-in-progress being filmed at Cinecitta as long suffering last honest man Sordi shows up –in business suit- to audition as a Christian Martyr, running into old pal Vittorio Gassman (as himself) in the lion-pit; Vittorio’s paying his own bills in the guise of a Centurion. The surreal clash is a small grace note in a near flawless summary of the best comedy-epic tradition to date, played downbeat heroically in honor of the underdog, the art-of-getting-by told from the p.o.v. of one who refuses to submit. Highly recommended.
