I think you have a very valid point. Japanese terminology has no place in the Evo fandom. Unless the character [original I mean] is from Japan - which is very unlikely. Its stupid to put in terms from a language which ahs no reason to be there, just because its apparenty 'cool'. As the matter of the fact, using words, and phrases of a language that you don't understand is actually very rude to those of that ethnicity. Maybe its just me, but I get really bugged by people using the suffixs: '-kun', '-san', '-sama', '-chan' etc, in normal life when they're not Japanese! Cause usually they're using the language wrong. ==; People I think, will use that kind of terminology just because its suposed to be the 'in thing' to do. Especially to newer writers. he best thing other people can do is try to slap them, or just point out that they're wrong. ><

*rollseyes* You mean FanFUCKtion.net I really hate that place now. I rarely go there anymore. There's a bunch of idiots over there making really bad fics out of great shows, stories, and movies. *pukes* I'm an anime fan myself, but I don't use chan, sama, kun, etc unless I talk about an anime/manga chracter that I really like or goes by that name in the anime/manga. And I know what they mean so thppt to those crazy wannabe's who don't. I have the common sense not to use that stuff in Evo or anything else. It's just stupid. *pukes gain*

*shrugs* I hear -chan, -san, -kun and all so much working for an anime con that it doesn't bother me anymore.
Seeing it written is different though...if you're just messing around (like Tal calls me Keely-chan sometimes in the goof off threads and such) that's fine, but if it's being written in a story that isn't anime, yeah, it's pretty annoying.
It does suck though that English doesn't have honorifics really. If we were in Japan I'd totally call Tal Tal-chan and Quin Louis-kun because I'm that close to them, but I just have to try to find ways to shorten their names, or use random nicknames instead. I like the way that some other languages set apart how you call someone based on your relationship to them, and I can see how some people would want to ‘steal’ that from Japanese.
But I do agree, you have to just find other ways to show those relationships in a different fandom, such as evo. You’ll notice that Logan and Quin both call Keely Kel, and Logan and Quin both have nicknames for, well…everyone, showing how they feel about them. Keely shortens some people’s names, and calls Xavier either Professor Xavier, Charles or Dad depending on who she’s talking to and what she’s talking to Xavier ABOUT. When she’s pissed she calls him “Daddy” all sarcastic-like.
I guess what I’m saying is that what you call someone is important and I can see WHY someone would try to fit the -chans, etc, into their stories, even though it can be annoying.

Whee, weighing in *roll* Yeah, the fangirl Japanese gets on my nerves. But what really irks me in Evo RPGs (or any for that matter) are the characters who scream stereotypical anime character. The Four Elements control, the weird hair (if the guy has white hair, that's almost a sure sign -- pietro and magneto do not count; they did it before Japan caught on), the ubercuteness -- the CAT EARS, and the claiming to be from Japan but the name tells you they got it out of a dictionary, since they can't place the proper name suffixes. *takes a deep breath* But yes. I'm beginning to lose faith in anime in general, simply because America has gotten to the point that if it is Japanese or LOOKS Japanese *cough*TeenTitans*cough*, it should and will sell. It's ridiculous. Half the people I know are emulating a fad from a culture they won't even do the research to understand. As for using random japanese in real life, I am guilty of doing it. However, that is because I took three years of the language in high school, and several things stuck with me. I call my mother OkaSamma, and I'll pull a Kenshin and go "Oro?" in the middle of class. When I try to get my friend's attention, I say "Ne, ne!" Random moments of "hey, wait a minute!" are resopnded to with "Are?" And other such things. Oh, and "Wai!" is my favorite horray sound. *scuttles off*

"If somebody is *going* to use Japanese terms, then they *better* be learning Japanese."
This is crap. No.
I demand reforms. Amend this sentance to read:
'If somebody is going to use Japanese terms then they better be a Japanese speaker, or Japanese themselves TALKING TO ANOTHER JAPANESE SPEAKER OR JAPANESE PERSON.'
Nothing insults me more than moronic little teenagers who are all 'Ohh, I know what the difference between sama and kun is! lalalalala!' good one. Or 'I'm bi-lingual! Bi-lingual!' NO YOU'RE NOT. If you can't speak English. You're not bilingual, and you can't speak English (Not you Admin-lady, other people).
Really. The only place Japanese belongs is amoung the Japanese, or Japanese speakers, speaking Japanese. Maybe some day when it has a solid foothold in the vernacular words like Chan might become pirated English, much as terms like Bon Mott - which can be found in any English dictionary.
At the moment though, they're not. So leave them alone.
