![]() Title: Powers By: Brian Michael Bendis (writer) and Michael Avon Oeming (artist). Rating: Suggested for mature readers. Summary: Powers is a crime/superhero comic about two police detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who work with homicides that involve "powers" (people with superpowers). Powers is set in a world where superpowers are relatively common but not mundane, the superheroes are just another aspect of celebrity you could say. Walker himself used to be a costumed superhero and he still has connections to the superhero community - sometimes it helps their police work, sometimes it complicates things... Why you should check it out: Powers is one of those superhero comics that explores what society would look like if there were super powered heroes and villains living among ordinary people. The dialogue is fast paced and smart and the comic very much reminds of a cop show on tv in certain ways, or a film noir. The dynamic between Walker and Deena is also one of the reasons to tune into this comic - it's one of the most interesting partnerships I have read in a comic. Another thing I like about Powers is that it's not afraid of drastic change. If you start reading the series, be prepared for some huge twists and turns in the story and in the lives of Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim. |

Title: Preacher By: Garth Ennis (writer) and Steve Dillon(artist) Rating: Suggested for mature readers (make no mistake about that) Summary: (From Wikipedia)Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a down-and-out preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer was accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis in an incident which killed his entire congregation and flattened his church. Genesis, the product of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon, is an infant with no sense of individual will. However, as it is composed of both pure goodness and pure evil, it might have enough power to rival that of God himself. In other words, Jesse Custer, bonded to Genesis, may have become the most powerful being in the whole of living existence. Custer, driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, goes on a journey across the United States attempting to (literally) find God, who abandoned Heaven the moment Genesis was born. He also begins to discover the truth about his new powers, which allow him to command the obedience of those who hear his words. He is joined by his old girlfriend Tulip O'Hare, as well as a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy. Why you should check it out: If you love great stand up guys like George Carlin and Bill Hicks this is the graphic novel for you. This is the ultimate asshole comic that is guaranteed to offend a bunch of people, not only because of its profuse profanity and graphic violence, but because it's take on God/heaven and angels. It's a spiritual quest for Jesse Custer but also an exploration of the role of American identity and ideals in the modern age. And finally: all I can say: if the story of Arseface in this excellent comic doesn't move you I don't know what will |

Dan Dare by Garth Ennis (Preacher, Hellblazer)
Ennis has written a seven issue series for Virgin Comics bringing back Britains original space hero, Colonel Dan Dare. Dare was originally created in the 1950's by Frank Hampson as a British answer to Buck Rogers and the other imported American sci fi heroes. Dare was a pilot in the International Space Force who did battle in outer space with the evil Mekon - the despotic ruler of an alien race called Treens. Ennis has brough Dare, disheartened by the state of his country and of his world, out of retirement to try and save the Earth in an epic, last ditch struggle between the Mekon's returning forces and the remains of Earth's space navy. If you love great space opera/war stories with excellent characters and genuine heroics, then this is for you. These seven issues are some of the best comics I've read for years. They are exciting and genuinely compelling with Dare providing a refresingly stoic, thoroughly decent and old fashioned hero who really does believe in such things as loyalty, courage, honour and duty. http://www.virgincomics.com/root_dandare/dandare.aspx |

![]() Title: Vampire Loves Author: Joann Sfar Summary: Meet Ferdinand, a vampire who bites his victims with only one tooth in order to pass as a mosquito, who loves the music of dead folk singers, and who has no end of trouble trying to make sense of his relationships, some living, some not. Vampire Loves follows the strangely romantic adventures of Ferdinand and his friends as they flirt with, seduce, cheat on, break up, and make up with all manner of unearthly creatures including ghosts, other vampires, tree-folk and the occasional golem. Edgy, charming, and filled with Joann Sfar's inimitable blend of tenderness, comedy, melancholy, and philosophy, the stories in this first volume draw as much from the wellspring of Eastern European Jewish mysticism as from twenty-first-century Goth culture. Love isn't any easier when you're dead. Why I recommend it: It's appropriate for all ages. Ferdinand is easy to fall in love with, and his quest for love is so nice. I reread this graphic novel over and over again and I hope you will read it, too. |

My favorite comic series is "Nemi". It's a norwegian comic, but it has been translated into other languages, as well.

Nemi is great! It's very popular in Sweden Since you are Norwegian misskitten I must ask you what you think of Christopher Nielsen's comics? Do you know his work? He's Norwegian comic artist that is mostly famous for To Trøtte Typer (Two Wasted Wankers) and the animated film Free Jimmy. I think he's a genius |

Title: Sandman By: Neil Gaiman (writer) and many different artists Rating: Suggested for mature readers. Summary: (from Wikipedia) The Sandman's main character is Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, who is essentially the anthropomorphic personification of dreams. At the start of the series, Morpheus is captured by an occult ritual and held prisoner for 70 years. Morpheus escapes in the modern day and after revenging himself upon his captors, sets about rebuilding his kingdom, which has fallen into disrepair in his absence. Gaiman himself has summarized the plot of the series (in the foreword to Endless Nights) as "The Lord of Dreams learns that one must change or die, and makes his decision." Why you should check it out: This comic is just marvelous - it's dark horror and elaborate fantasy, incorporating elements of classical and contemporary mythology. I love the way Neil Gaiman lets us follow some characters part of the way and later meet up with them with this wonderful consistency that tells us about the consequences of what happened in the past and how it forms us. The quality of the art work is a little up and down through the series but don't miss my BIG idol Dave McKean's beautiful covers. |

Sorry, but "To trøtte typer" and "Free Jimmy" is really not my thing. One of my roommates sat me down with the movie and I was bored out of my mind. I just have a completely different sense of humor. I don't know if he has anything else, but I doubt it's something of my interest. |
