Disney’s Buyout of FanLib Still On; Will Focus On Company Shows

By Rafat Ali - Tue 05 Aug 2008 08:26 PM PST

Last week we reported that FanLib, the Los Angeles-based community site dedicated to showcasing fan fiction, was shutting down, even though it was in the process of being bought by Disney (NYSE: DIS). We weren’t sure if the buyout was still on, but we have now confirmed from sources that the deal is still on, and is in the final stages of closing. The shut-down appears to be part of a business-model switch. As I mentioned in the earlier post, Disney will be completely retooling FanLib with a focus on its own properties, instead of fan fiction and other networks’ TV shows and movies.

Fan Fiction Site Fanlib Closing Down; Disney Deal Nixed?

By Rafat Ali - Tue 29 Jul 2008 12:54 PM PST

imageFanlib, the Los Angeles-based community site dedicated to showcasing fan fiction, has abruptly closed down. In a note on its site, it says the site will shut down on August 4th, but doesn’t give any specific reason for the closure. Earlier in June, we reported the company was in the process of being bought by Disney (NYSE: DIS), and not yet sure on the status of that deal. The site launched about a year ago, and had raised about $3 million from H.I.G. Ventures in 2006...one likely scenario could be that the Disney deal fell through, and the company ran out of money. More as we find out…

For some more perspective on fan fiction sites, read this: ”On the Demise of Fanlib, and Why Fan-run Sites Are More Likely to Succeed”

But FanLib should've explained to us exactly why they were closing. We deserve to know.

Yes, Fanlib should have had the courtesy to explain to us why they were closing and MissKitten's response was very thoughtful indeed.

Although I'm with you on the sentiment that Fanlib could have explained to us, I don't think they owe us anything. And it may not have been possible for them because of business concerns.

Even an explanation of "We can't explain due to XYZ" would have helped me, but oh well. laugh.gif
