Title: Your Favourite Video Game?

Fox - May 18, 2007 04:35 PM (GMT)
For the next comic I have a bunch of ideas for toying with video games, but I'd like to see which game people like best. (Or at least think are funniest)

God of War II, The Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess, or World of Warcraft?

I have lots of ideas for each, being games I've played recently and found hilarious moments in... but I do want to make sure the people reading this are going to GET whatever joke I'm making.

Jalyss - May 19, 2007 05:44 AM (GMT)
A world of warcraft comic? Are you serious?

There isn't a joke left to be had there.

Admanios - May 19, 2007 01:43 PM (GMT)
God of War II - Well, it is ridiculous in its violence... it'd probably be the easiest to mine for jokes.

Twilight Princess - I'm sure there's funny in it, but I haven't seen enough of the game to say what.

World of Warcraft - What Jalyss said.

Of the three, the only one I ever got to actually play was WoW.

minion#12 - May 20, 2007 02:24 AM (GMT)
Never played WoW, but after watching my roommate run around for hours, there's plenty of humor already had at it's expense, and still more to come.

God of War II is more my type of game. Randomly ridiculous amounts of violence? Aw heck yeah!

Skit - May 20, 2007 04:58 AM (GMT)
Rogue Galaxy.

Yeah, you heard me!

Admanios - May 21, 2007 01:58 PM (GMT)
To answer the question posited in the thread title: Quest for Glory IV.

Warts and all.

Fox - May 21, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
I've umm... never played Rogue Galaxy or Quest for Glory... which might be a problem in the comic creation process.

Aside from mayble some random not-funny blurb.

"wat r u plying?"
"QfG"
"lolmuffins"

Actually "lolmuffins" is an awesome word, maybe I will use that.

Tebryn - May 27, 2007 08:15 PM (GMT)
your lolmuffins falls before the might of my ROFLCOPTER!!!

>>

In answer to your question I haven't played any of those games, but I vote for GoWII because I've seen a lot of Zelda comics around DA, and I get my WoW fill from Looking For Group.

Fox - May 28, 2007 12:01 AM (GMT)
Okay, I think I've got a pretty good idea here. I should be able to do this.

JackCain - June 16, 2007 10:16 AM (GMT)
Disgaea.

Also Jade Cocoon 2.

Rikke - June 23, 2007 11:59 AM (GMT)
Final Fantasy. I’ve got many reasons for loving this game: It’s an all-girly-girl game, with some numbskull/inept blonde hero, and a female protagonist that somehow always manages to look the same.
This decreases the cognitive stress of playing the game. You’ve played one once, you don’t have to worry about getting to know the characters. They’ll think and act just like the guys before them, and you can focus on the story.
That, and I love the fact that if it has a circle floating around or below it, it can fly! Don’t ask why. There’s a circle, so it's flying. It just works like that. Period.
Why hasn’t reality figured this undisputable truth out yet!? Would’ve made a lot of stuff a lot easier!

Fox - June 26, 2007 01:57 AM (GMT)
I tried playing Final Fantasy Seven. And to be fair, I did complete the game... but I didn't care for it.

I only ended up playing the game as part of a challenge with somebody else to get them to play Resident Evil.

I really prefer Resident Evil though.

RoruArcher - June 26, 2007 04:01 AM (GMT)
Ace Combat 5. I dunno why, it just is.

Okami is still my favoritest game ever.

But, if you are doing other games, consider Guild Wars. It's like WoW but with better graphics and no monthly cost! (Though admittedly, their mouths don't move)

kitsu - June 26, 2007 08:00 AM (GMT)
OK, I have to support Final Fantasy here. Eeehm ... great game ^^ . OK, I can do better.

I like the stories in FF. FF isn’t as much a computer game as we know them, it’s more like the beautiful child of movies and games. It’s an interactive story, in a universe that is always new, but in the same time deeply rooted in all the earlier versions. The holistic philosophy in the FF games, often involves some kind of draining or using resources, that we do not understand, and threatening the whole world with our incompetent search for glory and success. I wonder why that stuff appeals to a biologist like me ^^ .

Suffice to say, you play FF, not to be a numbskull blond hero, but to investigate and understand the cultures and physics of this new world, while being told some kind of dramatic love story.

A more typical game that I have to mention here (old as it may be) is Fall Out. I absolutely adore this game. The post-apocalyptic world of the wastelands is an interesting setting for the primitive formation of culture, religion and state. I’m not going to make a long description of why this is so cool, just saying, that it sure works for me ^^

Jalyss - June 27, 2007 04:24 AM (GMT)
Story is an important thing to have in a game, because a good story is what makes the difference between a decent game and a good game, and also the difference between a good game and a great game.

But story and characters will only take a game so far. The medium of video games is not something where the story is the most important factor. Video Games are supposed to create something interactive and fun, and while a story can be an important part of that, it is not what should be the main focus. If your main goal is to tell a story, then the proper way to do that is to create a movie, or write a book.

This is the problem I have with Final Fantasy. The gameplay is... boring. While you can praise the story and the characters and the world and anything about it as much as you want, these things do not make a good game. they will make only a better game if you're enjoying the interactive part.

Final Fantasy is a good story, but I didn't find it a fun game.

Rikke - June 27, 2007 12:04 PM (GMT)
True. FF is more of an advanced kind storytelling than an actual game. ^___^ But I guess that's what I like about it. I don't really see it as a game.
However, I can't forgive FFXII for having replaced Cactuars with stupid penguin-like cactuar-wannabes.
Oh well.

All hail the penguins, lords and masters of the vast eternal everlasting nothing!

(warnig: inside joke ... the time Rikke and I first met, we had a looooong religious war between the heretic followers of the duck, and the followers of the all knowing all loving penguin ... Cactuars looking like true divine creatures may be a little much for Rikke to handle ^____^ )

Kitsu mentioned Fall Out. I just thought I would put it out there - They're coming out with another one. It looks awesome.

Dejal - July 22, 2007 07:43 PM (GMT)
Deus Ex.

I get to sneak around knocking people out without killing anyone the whole game, while having the option open to me to blow things up and cause mayhem and destruction untold.

Also it fuels my overpowering paranoia and conspiracy mania. Always a plus!

Fox - July 22, 2007 08:29 PM (GMT)
Has anybody played Oblivion?

Queue - July 22, 2007 09:09 PM (GMT)
I have to agree on Deus Ex (I can't remember if I told Dejal about it first or if he told me. I think I told him).

I killed a lot more people than he did. :P

But, the whole premise was great and for its time it had amazing production values.

I still have trouble getting into Oblivion. I keep telling myself to try and pick it up again, but I can never build up the motivation to do so.

Well, doing the time when Rikke and I lived in Odense (as I was doing the laboratory-part of my master-assignment in that city), I played a little Oblivion (a little more than 20 hours). I truly loved this game ... but as it didn’t really work as a social game, it soon died a silent death. To me it’s important that an occupation taking so much time, should involve the both of us! Oblivion didn’t ^^

But Oblivion is truly a masterpiece. They try to give you (the player) a great deal of freedom to investigate and have fun in this strange world. You can hunt around the forests, be a thief in the slums of the great city, make yourself a name in the arena, be a great hero upholding society, hunt vampires in the sewers ... the possibilities a many. But perhaps most importantly, you get to evolve your character, get a feeling for the person, and make actions in accordance to the nature of the character, and not the manuscript of the game-producers!
All together a great game ^^

Unfortunately its downfall was lack of multiplayer. If I could play that with my friends online, I'd still be playing it. I probably wouldn't even have the motivation to go to work and try to feed and clothe myself due to a deep abiding addiction to be a sneaky rogue type with my friends in a fantasy world.

As it is I get bored after about 15 minutes.

Fox - July 23, 2007 02:03 AM (GMT)
Making the transition to online multiplayer games is very hard for me. I'm still struggling to get more than a couple days a month out of World of Warcraft. There's something about the experience that seems... to usually break the world of the game, and I think that more than anything is why I find myself so disassociated with them sometimes.

Tebryn - July 23, 2007 03:57 AM (GMT)
NAAAAAAAA na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na Katamari Damacy!

Seriously, this is one of the weirdest games ever, and it is so amazingly addictive! There is nothing cooler than being about 50 metres tall, and rising up out of the sea like Godzilla, picking up office buildings and hearing the people inside screaming.

Fox - July 23, 2007 04:27 AM (GMT)
I haven't played that game in a while. I should do it again.

Indeed. It's so cutesy, Japanese, and somewhat trippy, that you barely even know that you're sucking people into a giant ball that you'll eventually turn into a star and burn them all up :D

Favorite Videogame? There's so many.

>The Halo series.
>Supreme Commander (and SC: Forged Alliance). SCII? Not so much.
>Metroid Series (Prime and Echoes in particular; Fusion was short and sweet, too).
>Any Star Wars game, provided it isn't pure merchandise based on popularity of the series. Basically anything with solid gameplay, like Knights of the Old Republic and it's sequel.
>The 3D Legend of Zelda series (OoT was absolutely magnificent for its time). Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess were good, too.
>MMORPGs such as Runescape. I really should try WoW sometime (I understand the jokes, but I feel like I'm missing something having never played it before) and The Old Republic when it comes out.

Sooo... yeah.
