Donnie Skaggs, who is jetlag on here, was reported to be in a jetski accident and is in the hospital. I don't have any details, but it sounds like he is in pretty bad shape. If anyone has anymore info on his condition, please let us know. Thoughts and prayers go out to Donnie and his family.

Update on Donnie. He had some internal bleeding but they did surgery and stopped most of it. He's doing a little better than he was, but has a long road ahead of him with more surgery coming.

Hi, this is Julie. Donnie was involved in a freak jet ski accident last monday. I have not spoken with him since he has never been alert except for an hour the following day. His injuries are severe and we are hoping each day things will get better. We were told that this is not a race, but a marathon and as he wins each each event a new one starts or he slides back to the previous event. Donnie at U of L and went straight to surgery. He has broken not fractured his pelvis in five places. Best way to describe is on Thanksgiving when you get the wishbone and pull it to see who get the biggest piece. He has bruising on his kidney, bladder, and spleen. He had tore some veins in small intestines and other injuries, he is a large amount of fluid on his body. He was suppose to go to TCU but was sent to ICU. Tuesday morning he was alert but I was not composed enough when entering and he stated he was dying. I tried to reassure him he wasn't. The nurses and doctors tried to do the same. Unfortunatley, he knew more than we did and his heart stopped for 9 long minutes. He was then sent back downstair to fix an artery that was bleeding. He has went through 20 packets of blood and blood products so anyone wishing to donate please do to the American Red Cross. He is now on a ventalator and we are waiting for the physician to come in they are putting a trach in today and a feeding tube on Tuesday and hopefully surgery on Wednesday to fix his pelvis. Once he is able to have surgery these will be the biggest hurdle. we have a space book site with updates under Donnie Skaggs. We want Donnie to understand how lucky he is to be alive and next to give him the strength to go forward. The earliest he will leave the hospital and that is without any more complications is October31. We appreciate your concerns but request no visitors at this time except family and very close friends. The trauma he has indured takes all his strength he has as well as his family and close friends helping me since we are staying 24/7. Once he is in a regular room and can tolerate company you are more than welcome to come and stay as long as you like, but at this time it is very difficult. As my favorite doctor told me on Thursday. Tuesday he should have died, but he didn't and it was a miracle, Wednesday he was better, Thursday he was worse but not as bad as Tuesday because he should have died and Friday he was better. Saturday was not a bad day but a bad night. One thing I'll add he has the #1 physicians, interns and medical staff at U of L you can get. I appreciate them all and the care they have given.

Donnie was awake for the first time in a week. They cancelled his procedure yesterday, but is scheduled for tomorrow. He is getting a trach so we can move on to another problem. He fully understands what is going on. No head injury just a long recovery. Last big hurdle yet to come on his pelvis hopefully by end of the week.
767 - September 28, 2010 01:26 PM (GMT)
Glad to hear he is awake!!!!!!
D SKAGGS - September 29, 2010 04:22 AM (GMT)
Donnie did have his trach today at 8 pm and doing well after surgery. Tommorrow will tell the story. He is having the big surgery on his pelvis. They will either put all the parts back together in one big surgery on put as many pieces back as they can and wait for another day. Now he has a small problem with Kidney and that is scheduled for tomorrow too. I am not too worried for this. Surgery at 1pm

Donnie did go to surgery yesterday, but once there he was opened and closed. The trauma his body suffered was causing so much swelling where they needed to go they couldn't get the plates in place so they have decided to wait until late next week. The did put some screws in pelvis to hold until the next surger and one in his leg. This was disappointing to the family, but we knew this could happen. Bright spot, his breathing has improved and he may come off the respirator by Sunday, will see.
