Vatican hails new Harry Potter film
15 July 2009 10:30am
The Vatican has praised the latest Harry Potter film, saying it made the age-old debate over good versus evil crystal clear.
The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano even gave two thumbs up to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince's treatment of adolescent love, saying it achieved the "correct balance" and made the stars more credible to the general audience.
The newspaper said the film was the best adaptation yet of the JK Rowling series about the adventures of the bespectacled child wizard and his Hogwarts chums as they battle Harry's nemesis, the evil sorcerer Voldemort.
While criticising Rowling for omitting any explicit "reference to the transcendent" in her books, L'Osservatore said the latest instalment nevertheless made clear that good should overcome evil "and that sometimes this requires costs and sacrifice".
The Vatican's praise follows the sharp criticism of the Harry Potter series by a conservative Austrian priest at the centre of a church crisis earlier this year.
The Reverend Gerhard Maria Wagner had characterised the Harry Potter novels as Satanism.
Pope Benedict XVI promoted Wagner to the post of auxiliary bishop in Linz, Austria's third largest city, in January.
But amid an outcry among Austrian Catholics over his comments, Wagner eventually gave up the promotion.

Potter magic sets box office record
15 July 2009 09:42pm
The latest adventure of the teenage wizard, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, took in $22.2 million (£13 million) across the US from midnight screenings, distributor Warner Brothers has said.
That breaks the record set by another Warner blockbuster, The Dark Knight, which grossed $18.5 million (£11m) from midnight shows last summer.
The sixth instalment in the Harry Potter franchise also topped this year's biggest hit, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which pulled in $16 million (£9.7m) from midnight screenings on its first day in June.
There was pent-up demand for Harry Potter after the last movie. The two-year wait was the longest fans have had to endure for a new Harry Potter film since the first movie arrived in 2001.
Warner originally planned to release it last November but bumped it to 2009 to take advantage of an open weekend in Hollywood's busy summer schedule.
"We're sorry that it caused some angst with our fans, but they're troopers, and they came out and supported the movie," said Dan Fellman, head of domestic distribution for Warner.
The new movie has Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) trying to pry loose a hidden memory from one of his teachers, who holds key information about the wizard world's darkest enemy, Lord Voldemort.
Earning some of the best reviews in the franchise's history, the new Harry Potter tale played to packed crowds in 3,003 cinemas for its midnight debut.
The seventh and final book in JK Rowling's fantasy series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is being split into two parts for the big screen, with the first movie due out in November 2010 and the second in July 2011. David Yates, who directed both Half-Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix, also is making the final two films.
"We just wish there were another four books," added Mr Fellman.

Harry Potter and his friends are grown men and women now. They wait too long between movies and they have all grown up. Harry and pals are supposed to be kids. I think they made an error in trying to make a movie out of EACH book.
Ladypeartree - July 16, 2009 10:05 AM (GMT)
There is only one book left to make into a film now and in it the main characters are all supposed to be about 17 / 18 years old so it should work well <<tmbup>>
Scarletprayers - July 16, 2009 02:17 PM (GMT)
Well except that are going to make 2 movies out of the last book!
Ladypeartree - July 16, 2009 03:00 PM (GMT)
:D well the high school musical stars were in their 20's and were supposed to be still in school ::35::
Shiloh357 - July 17, 2009 01:13 AM (GMT)
Yeah, but do the books reflect the kids getting older and stuff?
Scarletprayers - July 17, 2009 01:55 AM (GMT)
Yes they do, each book is a new school year!
Ladypeartree - July 17, 2009 12:23 PM (GMT)
:D and they are very true to life in the emotions the portray ...none of the " erfect people " in these books

Yeah, about the ages. Daniel's age in the last movie was about the age he was in the last book of the series. It does change the tone a bit for him to be college age in his final confrontation than 17-18.
But yes, adults play teens all the time in the movies. It's annoying.
Oh well.
Haven't had the chance to see the new one yet.
I was wondering how Hermione was. In the last couple movies, I was annoyed by how different the actress' portrayal (and scripting) was different from Hermione in the book.
Ladypeartree - July 17, 2009 05:27 PM (GMT)
:D she was right on track .....the ending was a bit off from the book and people sat there waiting for " an ending " till the credits rolled but all in all it stuck to the book more than the others did <<tmbup>>

I saw a blurb about her in the news; the actress that is. She says it is hard for her to watch her performances in the first couple of movies in the series. Sh called it "torture," actually. She seems to like how they are doing her character. I wonder if she had something to do with how they changed?

*hm* lets see ...how many characters got killed ? including little colin creevey, one of the twins ( the other was maimed for life ) loads and loads of the good guys like remus and nymphadora sirius, kingsley , moody, etc etc etc ..the bad guys got away with loads ...even malfoy was allowed to send his children to hogworts and obviously hadnt learned much from the experience.... I would have liked to have know things such as what jobs they had after all there would have been no need for aurors so that was harry's chosen occupation gone ...what did ron do for a living ? did the remaining twin carry on with the joke shop or did he lose it after his twin died ? what happened to malfoys parents ? and the other death eaters ? what became of luna? ...oh sooooo many unanswered questions *t*t
darkest_red - July 18, 2009 02:26 PM (GMT)
Yeah, but the relationships between the main characters were highly predictable and such a bore....honestly, I think it would have been a much better ending if Harry had died saving the world... :D

Yes.
Your reaction could have been interpreted different ways. So I wanted to know your actual thoughts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Personally, I had likes and dislikes. But . . . dislikes happen in real life, so I can accept Rolin (sp?) writing in deaths I wish didn't happen.
But the epilogue, I agree was a mixture between a happy ending and a let-down.
I mean - I want a happy ending, so I won't complain about that. ( :P on you Red!)
But it was, I agree, incomplete.
I needed to read about the memorial service for those who died in the war.
I wanted to know how the other twin managed to carry on.
Who became head of Hogwarts?
And what professions did the characters get involved in?
Scarletprayers - July 19, 2009 02:44 PM (GMT)
appemote I agree Neb! I'm all for happy endings myself! appemote
