A tsunami warning has been issued for most of the Pacific after a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck Japan, triggering a deadly 10-metre high tsunami.

Numerous injuries and at least 32 deaths have been reported after the quake, Japan's biggest since records began, struck off the country's northeastern coast on Friday afternoon.

The dead included a 67-year-old man crushed by a wall and an elderly woman killed by a fallen roof, both in the wider Tokyo area.

Three more people were crushed to death when their houses collapsed in Ibaraki prefecture northeast of Tokyo.

A hotel collapsed in the city of Sendai and people were feared buried in the rubble.

The news on this just seems to get worse and worse! I don't know yet if my daughter's in-laws are safe (her husband's mother is Japanese) and so he has several relations in Japan including his brother.
