Tomato sauce doesn't smother the taste, it enhances the taste.

The lettuce and capsicum (I might add onion and beetroot) is a side dish - mainly for the look of the meal.

Here's a joke:

There was a man describing his part in a play where the curtain closed on an actor who had just been playing the part of someone badly injured and killed.

The first man's job was to smother the "victim" in tomato sauce to simulate blood and he was saying how the curtain was accidentally raised while he was in the middle of the job.
