Title: Computer Protection???
Marcie - October 15, 2008 08:14 PM (GMT)
I need a virus protector for my computer. Right now I have McAfee and it is driving me nuts <vik> . It scans and sends a message that my computer is not fully protected So I go to the site and click the Fix tab then it scans some more and says one or more of the problems can't be fixed and its always computer, files, email and IM. I wait a few minutes and go back and check and everything checks out ok. :::629:::
I've read of some sites that have free virus protectors and stuff but don't remember where they are. Soooooo, can somebody tell me which site they are on?

It's a very sticky wicket these days. I'm currently using Trend Micro (formerly PC-cillin), which is a paid product. However, most computer people will rightly advise that it's best to use multiple viral protection products, since most of the better ones work in different ways and do different things. Unfortunately, many of them block each other from ideally working together.
McAfee's is generally regarded as good viral software.
A couple of free ones of note are Avast (
http://www.avast.com/ )(
wiki!)
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.htmland AVG (
http://www.avg.com/?type=ps3925e )(
wiki)
http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-editionOne of the hazards to safe-guard against is the vast array of sites claiming to offer free viral software while actually violently infecting and attacking your computer. So please be sure to talk to lots of computer people before making a decision, and especially ones who know a good deal more about it than me, and always double check site addresses on any downloads.

Thank you et tu. One good thing about McAfee is the site advisor and sometimes even when it says they're are no popups there will be.

Well, I don't think so, I think it was about 60 bucks for a year, but that also covers 3 computers. I like it alot better than McAfee, its alot more user friendly I believe.

I've had Norton on this computer for about 2 years, and we've never had any problems so far. <<tmbup>>

Another great tip is to completey wrap your computer up in tin-foil.
This serves to keep out most of the 'undesired' elements.... upupup

First, have a look at the support section of the McAfee website:
McAfee Support for HomeIf you don't find what you need there, try this:
forums.techguy.org and run a search for McAfee in the General Security forum. You don't have to be a member to search, only to post.
I remember there were some folks having the trouble you describe a few weeks ago. Trouble with updates not working, etc. There is also a pinned post about several FREE antivirus/malware programs that are available (with paid versions cheaper than Norton, etc.)
Hope this helps. :D

AVG has a free version that is excellent. Here is the link.
AVG I have it on all my computers.
The virus scan is as good as you will find.
The spy-ware scanner is just Ok. I would suggest also getting spybot search and destroy
here is that link
spybot I also highly recommend K-9 web filter
K-9

you have crazy computers *diz
Use the AVG for the anti virus, and get the k-9. There are other spy removers, I have just found spybot to be about the best.
Do be careful there are some out there that are nothing by spy-ware themselves.
