The Weekend of December 5th-7th will mark the first film festival in quite some time, HTG's first ever Malibu Film Festival.
Starting November 1st through November 30th, we will be accepting submissions for entry into the competition.
Rules:
1) Your film cannot be longer than 40 pages in length.
2) While not every film at the festival will end up with a release, it is important to note that if you write a franchise film that you do not own the rights to, it ultimately makes it hard on a studio to release the film. While adapted works are not being turned away, I feel it necessary to remind you that writing a script for a franchise you don't own may mean your film is only viewed at the festival.
3) You are responsible for finding a way to post your script on some kind of website for the judges to read. Any script submitted without a link will be deemed ineligible. We are not emailing scripts to the judges.
4) Any advertising you do for a film in the contest must state that the film is for the film festival.
5) You are allowed to enter films that already have distribution, but they must still meet the page requirement. Each producer/writer may have 2 films in the competition. There is no limit for studios, just the people who wrote them. So you can't write 9 five-page films about eating salad just so the one film you wrote that didn't completely suck wins the 50M prize.
ADDENDUM
6)Rereleases are not allowed. If your film has been theatrically released in HTG, it is ineligible for the competition. If your film has been theatrically released in TMG or a previous game, and meets the other requirements, feel free to submit it. If your film has appeared on HTGTV, it is ineligible. You are ineligible also if your film is set to be released before December 12th (the Friday after the festival).
Judges will be determined closer to the date.
The grand prize for this contest is 5 million per film submitted, up to 50M. So, if there are 10 films submitted, one producer will walk away with 50 million dollars, and bragging rights.
If at least 10 films are submitted, there will also be prizes for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress. The winner producer of each will win 5 million.
If 20 films are submitted, there will be an Honorable Mention prize of 25 million.
There is no cost to enter. A list of the films in competition will be released on December 1st. A ceremony will happen on December 7th where the winners will be announced.
More info about how to submit will be posted closer to November 1st.
If you are interested in being a judge for the event, you may PM me. You are allowed to judge even if you have a film in the event if you meet two criteria: 1) You must be a registered critic with at least 20 reviews in the critics corner. 2) You are not allowed to vote or review your own films.
If you are interested in sponsorship of the festival, or offering up more prizes, please contact me in PM.

A Few More Rules Specifically for Franchise Films:
1) If you are doing a film to a franchise you don't own, you are essentially releasing a "spec script" against "films". You may not have a cast for your script, merely suggestions for anyone who wants to pony up the money to buy your script/franchise.
2) More importantly, if the franchise you have chosen to write about is already owned by someone else, and not just unowned, you lose the right to advertise at all. Your script is still eligible, and can be read by the judges, but you can't be running ads for a Batman Vs Superman, if two other people already own those franchises. Get the drift? But if you were to write the aforementioned film, it's essentially like writing fanfic, and there's nothing against that in this game.
3) If you are writing a film to a franchise you don't own, you are ineligible for any Director/Actor/Actress awards.
As you can see, it's a huge disadvantage to write a film for a franchise you don't own, as you can't cast it, you can't advertise that it's in the festival, and you may not be eligible for a chunk of the awards. Your adapted script will be placed in direct competition with other original scripts that have the benefit of promoting a cast as well as the film, and being up for multiple awards. So while I'm not forbidding adaptations, it's kind of a pain in the butt.
