FADE IN:INT. SMALL HOMEA teenager moves throughout his home, this is ARLEN (Paul Dano).
ARLEN (V.O.)
My family wasn't perfect. Probably the farthest thing away from it.
Arlen is shown shouting at his step father, JAMES (Stephen Root). Arlen's mother tries to break it up, but they continue arguing.
ARLEN (V.O.)
Sometimes, I'd wish something would happen to my prick step-father, then me and my mom could live a semi-normal life.
Arlen walks into the kitchen, tossing his schoolbag onto the table. Arlen's Mother is chopping up vegetables for their dinner.
MOTHER
Any homework?
ARLEN
Easy stuff. I'll do it later.
FADE TO BLACKARLEN (V.O.)
Unfortunately, things don't go the way you want them to.
CUT TO:
INT. SMALL CARJames is shown driving. His hand reaches down, and he pulls out a can of beer from under his seat. James pops the can open, and takes a long drink.
INT. SMALL HOMEArlen's mother steals a sip of James's beer, and James sees her do it. James smacks the can to the ground, the alcohol leaking all over the carpet. James and Arlen's Mother begin fighting.
CUT TO:
INT. ARLEN'S ROOMArlen sighs, and he gets up out of bed and goes to try and stop the fighting.
ARLEN (V.O.)
That's when it started.
INT. SMALL HOMEJames smashes Arlen's Mother into the TV, and then snaps her neck, killing her. James grunts as Arlen's Mother's body falls to the floor, the life drained out of her, and Arlen sees this happen before his eyes.
ARLEN
You Mother-
A GUNSHOT rings out as we-
FADE TO BLACK
EXT. GAS STATIONArlen is fighting with someone, though it is unclear who it is. Arlen shoves them, and kicks their kneecap. They scream out in pain.
INT. GAS STATIONArlen is behind the counter, and several gunshots ring out, but he doesn't look to see what's happening.
EXT. STREETArlen is walking towards a female and three men. Arlen points a sub-machine gun at them.
ARLEN
Tell me what's going on!
The female is SAM (Sasha Alexander), she speaks up.
SAM
It's the alcohol. Russians put a virus in it that is causing everyone to turn violent. It's an outbreak...
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENTThe three men, Sam, and Arlen are shown firing at a horde of the infected, and the CAMERA pans around to look over Arlen's shoulder as he fires. It turns into SLOW-MOTION for a second as he fires directly at an infected, and their arm flies off. The CAMERA returns to NORMAL SPEED as Arlen runs through a door.
CUT TO: EXT. CITYMilitary soldiers are shown behind a chain link fence, and Arlen and Sam are shown on the other side. Arlen slams up against the fence, screaming.
ARLEN
Let us out! Let us out!
FADE OUTTO THE EDGE appears on the screen along with the sounds of screams and gunfire.
