What other uses do you think there will be for money in Oblivion?
Apart from repairing weapons money wasn't essential, or even close to, when you had weaponry and armour. And besides enchanting there was absolutely nothing expensive.
So, what else? Rates on any manors? Taxes? Hiring pack horses or mercenaries? Hiring horses? Harsher penalties for crimes?

I would like to see AT LEAST these uses for money in Oblivion.
(1) Buying houses and decorating them (When U BIG in d game world U gotta have da crib and also de acessoreeez...and whaddabout de bling-bling, hey?)
(2) Buying information from snitches (like in the real world!)
(3) Buying maps. Helps to explore! Yes, Oblivion will be 'smaller' than Morrowind, but I think they will have Humongous Dungeons n' caves.. the two expansions were hints in that direction...
(4) Paying to Level up. This is the Imperial City, home of the money-hungry Imperials, right? I'm sure ya gotta pay your dues of U gonna sing da blues...ya know it won't come easy! (Apologies to Neil Diamond)

(5)Hiring mercenaires
(6)Rewarding those that come to you for jobs, once you're the leader of a guild (a guy can dream right?)
(7)Buying great lands, with your own lake, forest, mountain and, of course, a great Imperial stronghold with a very large stable where you keep your horses
(8)Paying your servants in that stronghold to clean up, fix things, take care of your horses, guard and work for you

how about...paying to get into a club? I club with music and plays and stuff, you could walk in and listen to the nice music that they made or they could set a play you could whatch every time you walk in. It would never get old going into a play and try to pick of the actors with throwing daggers :laugh: :laugh:

perhaps you could invest in mining stocks, buy houses (as you suggested I believe), have to pay taxes once you are considered 'elite' (going by a few depending factors).
Another idea would be to melt your gold down and make things with it. Perhaps moldings for your armor or weapons? Make some rings to enchant? etc.
