"Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided - that was the great mistake of 1848 and 1849 - but by iron and blood."

History

The Gatlerian Federation’s origins are a matter of debate among Dinja’s historians, though most agree on one commonality; the alliance was formed to combat the rapidly growing dominance of the Kuraltai and Sirrah empires. Even from the beginning, political tensions between the three allied nations ran rampant. Despite this however, the shaky alliance did succeed in its original purpose and staved off the rising threat.

From then on, the alliance stuck and the Federation was formed. This particularly unique form of government designed by the Federation’s namesake, Alitaas Gatler, in order to give concessions of power to each Nation while maintaining a unified central government that could wield the Federation’s power effectively in times of duress. His vision, of course, took little account of the unstable relationship between men, elves, and dwarves. The Nations could put aside differences to preserve the Federation, but little was ever done to expand its power.

It was because of these very same internal feuds that the Federation was the last faction to attempt to colonize lands on Kande. It was because of this that they were only able to secure the most southeastern lands and that, at a huge price.

The initial Federation beachhead went smooth for the most part, as the Natives of Kande fled before the western armies. Rumor of other such comings and the destruction that followed had spread to the tribes of the Umgak and pacificism had generally been agreed upon by tribal leaders. The Federation would find little peace in Kande, however. Timber harvesting began as quickly as the Federation had come so that a city could be established for colonization. The jungle fought back. Nearly half of the Federation’s initial Kande task force was lost to either illness or attacks by wild animals. It was only a matter of time before the natives recognized this weakness. War between the Federation and the Kandians ensued, and disheveled band of superstitious warriors against a western superpower.

Government

The GFAHR consists of two secular levels of government; the Federal and National. The National level is divided into three sections, each consisting of non-sovereign nation of people; the Elves, the Dwarves, and the Humans. Each Nation is ruled by a council of varying size elected by its people, though voter stipulations differ between each. From each National Council, three members are selected to represent their Nation on the Federal Council. The tenth member on the Federal Council is always the Commandant of the combined Federal Military forces. Powers delegated to the National level of government include the management of civil rights, criminal law, criminal punishment, and the right and responsibility to raise, train, issue gear to, and maintain a national militia. Powers delegated to the Federal level of government include the right to levy taxes, issue tariffs, dispense funds to the different Nations, institute a draft for the National Military, declare war, and command emergency powers within any Nation(though this has happened once.)

While the GFAHR is a potential juggernaut both militarily and economically, its convoluted, indecisive, and inefficient brand of Federal government prevents it from gaining any power over Dinja’s other factions. Its Federal Council is a laughingstock among the world’s other leaders for its inabilities to effectively lead the three Nations as a whole, especially due to internal squabbling. Despite the impotence, however, each Nation thrives separately.

Culture

The Federation’s citizens have adopted a lenient stance towards foreign cultures and as a result, it has no distinct cultural identity. Rather, it is an amalgamation of free Elven, Human, and Dwarven ideals with hints of others as well. Magic users are generally viewed with caution and a healthy fear by both Dwarven and Human citizens and their number is chiefly compromised of Elves. Religion is a very private practice and there are few known churches as they can’t afford the taxes. The Federation’s people are very industrious and the Nation of Dwarves is renowned for its weapon and armor craft. Outside of the Nation of Dwarves however, the Federation does not benefit from this as much as they profit from its trade.

Military

While the Federation’s military is among Dinja’s largest, it’s not its most powerful. Each Nation has its own militia while the Nation of Men and the Nation of Elves also maintain sizable navies. The Federal government also supports a militia, though it is filled with the most raw and undertrained of troops, rejects from the separate National militias. The Federal government however, also possesses the power to draw troops from the National militia and thus holds each Nation at a fragile stalemate. When this has been done in the past, National troops have not always been the most obedient or loyal to the Federation itself. Among Federated troops, Dwarves generally have the best armor, while the Elves are among the most skilled with blades and magic. Human soldier are the only soldiers in the Federation who equip firearms, though the dwarves do smithy them. The Nation of Elves favor longbows over rifles. The Federation's military is known for being among Dinja's most balanced.
