Slow, hot, dark –- wait: down love
-- black canvas revolve within you – understand?
The universe. So many planets, so many civilisations, and all spinning out of control. Snapshots of transmissions, facts gleaned from unreliable sources, and no one knows what’s really going on.
Fragile earth: where cracks in the temperature keep you cool to give you – understand?
The Doctor had already lost so much. Rose Tyler was left with the Meta-Crisis Doctor on the parallel world. Donna Noble had all of her memories erased to save her life. Martha Jones left to work with UNIT and marry Tom Milligan. Captain Jack Harkness had Torchwood to keep him going.
‘Cos I just can’t find the strength to keep you up and keep you taut
He carried on, that Last of the Time Lords. The Doctor met the Lady Christina, and stopped the deadly waters on Mars. All he could ever do was carry on. But then, wanting to see how that favourite blue and green planet was doing, he went back to Earth, September 2009. He heard the message of the 456, and waited for that brilliant human race to do him proud.
The Doctor stopped watching when he saw the governments of the world preparing to hand over their children.
Hijacked, lost track, light fades –- another day left –- long shadows draw you in
Humanity sickened him that day. Cutting all ties, the Time Lord left, abandoning all of Earth to its fate. They deserved nothing less. The end of the world came far too often, and Jack expected to see the Doctor again, but there was nothing.
The more you look, the less you see, so close your eyes and start to breathe
Centuries have passed. The old team had their time, and only Jack remains. UNIT came and went, but Torchwood lived on, just as the impossible human wanted. Now, Captain Jack Harkness is the head of the massive organisation, but under a new name – Yan Harper. Despite more grey hair, he hasn’t changed too much, either. Torchwood is a huge part of the Intergalatic Earth Empire, governing humanity into a new age of technological peace and happiness.
Oh, suit yourself, this wasn’t easy
The original ‘Captain Jack Harkness’ of the fifty-first century is out there, though. The Time Agency is a secret offshoot of Torchwood, determined to use their limited knowledge of time travel to benefit themselves. If the Agency is successful, they want to change humanity’s timeline and make them the rulers of both the Intergalactic Empire and the rest of the universe. The young Jack Harkness is their star Agent, and the older, impossible Jack has to work out a way to keep his own timeline stable, but stop his younger self from helping ruin the whole of creation.
No, I just can’t find the strength to keep you up and keep you taut
By now, the Doctor has aged centuries without a regeneration. He’s colder, harder and more determined than ever that he should be alone. Right up until an adventure pulled him to work with one Miss River Song – especially as the young woman saved his life. Dragged back to humanity, the last thing that the Time Lord wants is to start forging any new friendships.
With Torchwood losing control, the Time Agency determined to take over and River Song falling in love with a Time Lord that doesn’t want to know, how can humanity possibly survive?
And I just can’t find the strength.
One journey has ended. Are you ready for the next one?
