[story now]
[the next chapter]

Five years has passed since the war between the Resistance forces and Archadia. With the death of Vayne, peace was finally achieved, starting with the rule of Larsa. He declared himself the emperor of Archadia shortly after his brother's death, with his first order in throne to improve international relations. A rational and justified being, he aimed to end conflicts through negotiation, rather than violence, as his predecessors had done in the past. As he worked to establish peace through Ivalice, Ashe was there to help him, now as the queen of Dalmasca. Together, the two of them along with the Rozzarian leader Al-Cid, a period of peace and prosperity swept across Ivalice. It seemed like a step forward for all of Ivalice. The people loved the trio, accepting none other to be their leaders.

With many new ideas and plans in mind, Larsa began a Jagd reform, in hopes of turning the jagds into useable land. He began with by testing it on the Ridorana Cataract, by planting Mist absorbing machines throughout the sea, pulling the excess Mist out of the air condensing it into pieces of magicite. However, success came with its prices. With the sudden removal of the Mist, the beasts in the jagd grew to the point of insanity, in hopes of restoring the levels of Mist in the land. They began massive attacks on the adventurers and the workers, particularly those with magicite with them. The project was quickly deemed a failure, with Larsa starting quick restoration of the jagds.

Using the same machines which condensed the Mist, he used any unused pieces of magicite to thicken the Mist in the jagds. However, more problems began to arise, notably the shortage of magicite. The machines were notorious for being highly inefficient, as it was powered on Mist, making it that much of the original Mist had already been used to make the magicite, and that which was converted into magicite was only a small fraction of the actual concentration in the jagds. In hopes of gaining more magicite, the trio began a major excavation at Giruvegan, shaving away large pieces of magicite from the exterior of the Great Crystal.

A force of thousand strong was used during the excavation, assembled from the cities across Ivalice. Months into the program, it seemed promising, with much of the calamity of the jagds fading down. The monsters began to revert to their original lifestyle before the whole program, returning to normal and no longer targeting magicite. However, just when it seemed as if the whole problem was coming to an end, a new problem arose, this time, concerning all of Ivalice.

It began with the sudden disappearance of the entire task force within Giruvegan, all within a single day. However, that was only one of the many problems which arose. Suddenly, a great Mist spilled forth, covering much of Ivalice and corrupting the land with the powerful magic. With the sudden surge of Mist, mysterious beings began to appear, many of them calling themselves as the servants of gods. Clad in judge-like armor, they roamed Ivalice, with many people referring to them as judges. They began to wreck trouble, attacking adventurers and monsters alike, not differentiating between beings and beasts. As if the attacks weren't enough trouble, more disappearances spanned through Ivalice, beginning with Larsa, Ashe, and Al-Cid. With many of the leaders gone, the peace in Ivalice slowly began to dissolve, resulting in the rising chaos and destruction. For the citizens of Ivalice, the ensuing chaos paved two paths for each person. Some virtuous citizens chose the path of good, challenging the powerful judges in hopes of restoring peace through Ivalice. Others, corrupted by greed and envy, relied on a life of crime, using the chaos as an advantage to pillage and destroy others.

Which path shall you take?
