How and why was the middle passage so bad for black slaves??
evansa - May 18, 2004 02:54 PM (GMT)
becuse the smell and all the deseases diffrent people had were so bad that they spread very quick and they soon died after days. the smell was so bad because they used buckets as there toilets and the smeel sometimes sufficated them, some people even tried to jump off the deck to kill themselves but couldnt as the net would be in the way! :P
everistc - May 18, 2004 04:47 PM (GMT)
it was bad because they were so crowded with all the ill people that it felt like they were being suffercated.
it was also bad because of the smell one of the smell came from when people needed to go a toilet they didnt go in a normal toilet like us they had to go in a bucket.
they were also forced to eat lots of food.
it was really nasty some people couldnt take the smell or the suffercation so they really wanted to jump over the side of the slave ships.

It was bad for them because the slaves were jam packed into the bottom of the ship with only three toilets not even toilets buckets for hundreads of slaves to use and also only the people on board like captain would change and empty the barrel when they felt like it. They were only fed small amounts and if they did not eat they wold be beaten as they would die and the owners would loose money. Other reasons are they had net round the boat so they could not escape and where the slaves were kept it was easy to catch diseases and bacteria from the barrels(toilets) and from the dead people by them as they could die of suffercation. I also think that people should be able to stop slave traders selling slaves as it was unfair and i thi k noone should of done anything like that ever! Many people died froom being on the ship eg stavation, suffacation and many more so many people did not even survive the trip over the sea and to make things worse the jorney was very long and the slaves had to work on the deck with tools and so the slavves cpuld stop work they broke there toools so they did not have to work. Some of the slaves never made it back home so they had to stay where they were delivered and they were spilt up from there families and nerver ever saw them again which i thought was very wrong and the slave trade should of stopped ages ago!   xxxxxxxxxxxxx

The slaves were treated very badly by the slave traders. Roughy 11 million slaves died on the journey. Most slaves were very depressed and would of jumped off the ship if they were not chained to the deck. The ship was very very crowded and so diseases spead quickly. The ship smelt awful and this made slaves even more depressed. Slaves were beaten if they did anything wrong and were treated very bad by the slave traders. Slaves were not very clean and as the ship was very crowded made diseases spread. You were lucky if you were a slave is you lived until 30. You could also suffocate as the crowd was very crowded. Overall I think that it was VERY unfair the way slaves were treated and I am glad that it is banned today. :)

:D  ;) the smell and deseses was very bad as you could catch them as there was very little space on the ship so alot died some from suffercation :angry:they were treated creuly by the white people they even had nets form the boat to stop them from jumping out of the boat and swimming away which if they swam away the white people would of lost there money which they payed for them

:( It was bad because the ship was very crowded with lots of ill people and it felt as if they where being suffercated.
It was also very bad because the smell most came from the people that went to go to the toilet as they didn't go in a normal toilet like we do they had to go in a big basin. Some people even fell into it and drowned.
They where also forced to eat lots of food so it would keep them healthy and easy to sell.
It was so bad that some people couldn't handle the smell or suffercation and they realy wanted to kill them selves.

:( The smell on the slave ship was suffurcating. The slaves where chained so close together that it was easier for diseases and illnesses to spread. They were also forced to eat loads of food so they would be easier to sell.
Some of the slaves would either die of suffercation or a disease.
The slaves might also die of starvation as they would not eat any of the food they where given. If the slaves did not eat the foiod they would have been beaten.

It was bad because everyone was cramped together which ment there was a very bad smell. What made the smell worse was that they had buckets for their toilets and small children would have fallen in them. Many of the black people were put in chains which would have rubbed against their skin and their skin could get infected. No-one could barely move because they were either too cramped or they were tied to another person so they couldn't move any where without those other people or person. B)

the ships were very dirty and they had to go to the toilet in a bucket which is unheiginic which caused death and they were hit and killed if they did something wrong. Equiano thougth that the ships were powered by magic and thought that the white people were very differnt. people got soo deprest that they refused to eat and people got soo ill that a quarter of the peoples died. it was terrible for the all of the innocent black peoples were discriminated & were humiliated by having being whipped and hurt

It must have been utterly horrible and disturbing to be kidnapped from his native village and then suddenly being dragged to be put on a slave ship. He was shipped through the ardous being the "Middle Passage" of the Atlantic Ocean, seasoned in the West Indies.
Olaudah had described his experience in sources of books as "We all sweated, and that smell added to the rest, which caused many to fall sick and die." This explains how much bacteria of diseases could spread, especially when they all were so cramped up together in such little space as well as being chained to one another. It must not have been an easy journey at all. Some had even commited suicide by this ill-treatment of being whipped and hurt by their masters. Probably they thought that this was the only was out of this cruel place, that they would go far enough to killing themselves. This shows how ill-treated some of these slave traders were to such innocent young and old black peoples.

   The Middle Passage
the middle passage was so bad for black people bacause there were about 70 million slaves all chained together by their ankels and by there thrists. Black people were locked up for most of the journey. The chains were so tight that some people you could see the bone were the chain had cut there thrists.people were squashed together like dirt in the ground and thats how they were treated like dirt. The smell in bthe middle passage was so bad that it was a health risk too all the slaves. they used buckets as toilets and their was opnly about four buckets that seventy milllion slaves had to use (can you imagine that).if you thought that sounded bad then the smell was even worses as these buckets were only empted about once a month twice if you were lucky! Diseases were also a health risk as they were tied so close together the bacteria would spread like mad. Many people died from these terrible health risks as none did any think about these terrible conditions.when people did pass away the white people sometimes didn't notice and left them for days so the smell of dead bodies and the bacteria from the dead people killed more and more people each day and in fact if you was taken as a young lad to be a slave then you would probally only live untill you were 20.when people did die they were chunked over board and into the sea.

;) the middle passage :P
The middle passage was bad for the black slaves because slave ships, below decks, was crmmed full with too many people. All these people were chained together with no room to even turn. With everyone so close together disease spread easily, the stench was awful and extremely disgusting, it was almost suffocating. many black people died and were expected to die on the slave ships. Many would prefer death but they were prevented from jumping in to the sea by nets, the whites and being chained.they were beaten for not eating and were treated cruelly. The whites were described as and were savage. :( <_<
deerings - May 25, 2004 10:39 AM (GMT)
 :P :D well i think that it was very bad because of all the deseases going around the ship. people were dieing of the desaeases and the slaves were suffercating because there was no room and you couldnt breath. from sam deering and sarah williamson there was bad deseases spreading around the ship and people could catch it very easily.
The slaves knew what was happening yhey thought they knew they was dieing the ship started to smell really bad people were sick. :o
reddeyg - May 25, 2004 10:49 AM (GMT)
Grace Reddey says:
The slave traiders treated the black people extremly badly by not feeding them properly and getting them to be very very cramped and smelly. So the smell of the other slaves was far from bad and they were sweting and passing deseses on to each other so many were dieing. Many tried to jump off the side but they couldn't because there was nets covering the sides of the ships!
parrisk - May 25, 2004 10:57 AM (GMT)
Kimberley Parris says:
The slaves on the ship were treated extreamly badly! Where they were chained so close together the chains cut there flesh. Many died because of the smell of sweat and sewige from the bucket that was a toilet. They were beaten if they didnt acsept there food. They couldnt eascape because there were nets that were on the sides fo the boat that caut the ones that tryed to eascape.
:P ;)
regnierk - May 25, 2004 11:01 AM (GMT)
because it was smelly and they were all cramped and they were chained together and where the chains rubbed they bleed and this could cause diseases they di not have proper toilets they had buckets and if they refused to eat they were forced and this led up to depression and a lot of them would rather be put to death

the middle passage was so bad for the balcks because they had to put up with dispicable conditions. they were so bad that the unhygenic smells were killing people. the smells also carried unwanted bacteria and stop some of the slaves from eating causing hunger and starvation the slaves were forced to eat and beaten if they refused. the slaves were chained together with tiny spaces inbetween them they wer infact so small that the slaves could not turn around.
some of the women and children were screaming and crying the shrieks put together caused a colossal sound bcausing head shaking headaches. most people were not allowed on deck so it got very hot and stuffy. the lavourtory buckets were rarely cleaned a ;) nd children fell into them. this was sickening.
martine - May 25, 2004 06:33 PM (GMT)
The middle passage was not very nice the smells below deck were nasty and carried diseases that were sometimes so bad that people got sick and died. people were chained together below deck and could barely move. the blacks were forced to eat and if they did not eat then they would get beaten up.

i think it was awful there were hundreds of slaves onboard a ship and only three toilets which ment the hygein was horribly dirty. Lots of slaves caught deceases and alot of them died .The slaves were beaten if they did something wrong and also they had hardly anything to eat . :(
