Title: Against Comet Of Casandora
Description: Skies are falling!

Capraviridae - April 13, 2012 02:12 PM (GMT)
I tried a quick search within this forum, and was surprised to find no crying against the Comet of Casandora spell from the Lore of Heavens. I have witnessed it once and played against twice and it's freaking scary! Games were against High Elves who have ways to get the spells they want from the lore they want. So in each game my opponent wants, the skies are coming crashing down.

So, what do you think, is the spell overpowered and what are the best measures the Tomb Kings can take against them?

Dispel it.

Move out of the way.

Scroll of Shielding - 15pts

Gives you a 4+ Ward save against against wounds caused by the spell :)

Brilliant. Defintely a good use for that item.

EDIT: Even if the spell doesn't go off for a few turns due to the wording of the spell you'd still get the ward save.

wow, brilliant item indeed.
I'm defenitely remembering that one for my 'lightning rod' 50 skelletons. it actually works better than the obsidian lodestone. when my skaven buddy scorches the poor skellies, and learns that it's not very effective, he'll target other stuff afterwards. BUT when this scroll is one use only, he'll waste powerdice next turn as well because 'the way is now free.' :P
and it's cheaper too!

Thanks for the replies. Obviously dispelling it doesn't always work, otherwise there wouldn't be a problem at all. Scroll of Shielding is nice, though, as you can take it to another priest and have the Dispel Scroll on other. Thanks for that. Moving out of the way is a huge problem. It has been pointed several times that army is slow. Desert Wind has on limited use, because the comet strucks at the beginning of magic phase. Also, you have to choose to either move away as effectively as possible, meaning your battleline or whatever you want to call it is likely in shambles, or keep advancing and get hit by the comet. Any other army that can march, excluding maybe the dwarfs, this won't be as much of a problem. Warsphinx you can move as much as they can and then pivot side against the comet to maximize the distance, but then you risk flank charges. It is a great tactical spell, especially in the hands of a great general!

Maybe it's just that my infantry isn't planning to affect the battle anyway, and my opponent still has to chase down the remains to score VPs :) . Quicker stuff can get out of the way.

I think part of the reason it's gone unremarked is that the lore of heavens isn't taken much - it's queing behind shadows(pit, mindrazor), life(T7. dwellers), final transmutation etc.

my brettonnian foe uses heavens, and i must say it serves him quite well

Capraviridae - April 16, 2012 09:10 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I think Heavens is really underappreciated.

My Lizard opponent runs tetto eko in his army so drops the IF comet on me nearly every turn of every game we play. I'd rather that than dwellers or psox. At least the comet can't pop my heirophant with 1 bad roll on my part

Looking at the last edition, it seems like Heavens got nerfed hugely, except for Comet which got a huge buff.

Krael - April 19, 2012 11:01 AM (GMT)
8th edition magic that looks nerfed when compared to 7th?

Although the "can build into a board killing monstrosity" aspect of the comet doesn't exist anymore. It was fun when the 7th version would build to be so large it smacked every unit on the table, especially the caster himself.

It certainly can be a devastating lore, the comet is not only good for causing some damage on units but great for dictating movement and denying areas on the battlefield.

I've been meaning to run a dual comet list for High Elves and have a unit of Phoenix Guard with MR to wander in to the 'danger zones' to mop up so they'll have a 2+ ward against damage from the spell. :D

Capraviridae - April 20, 2012 08:39 AM (GMT)
Jimmy, I hate your list already...
