Title: Hlp Greatest Defensive Build
teclis - April 15, 2012 09:58 AM (GMT)
so i figured this out.
fensers blades
talisman of protection
potion of toughness
HLP is WS10 (4+ to hit), has 2A and a 4+ ward. if it becomes tricky he can drink the potion. this combo works great with TK because he can be buffed with Djef in order to get KB - 2A hit on 3+ KB :)
imo, either go naked (if u can bunker him and keep safe from divers) or go with this - ideal choice for aggresive TK (if there is such thing) and HLPs in tomb guard halberd hordes. hell with ramhotep in a unit he is 3A :)

An interesting tactic, but it does cost ALOT of points. I'm not sure its worth it, though I do run a similar setup(no potion) on a Slaughtermaster.

Just be sure to remember that one little detail that everyone seems to forget - you must drink the potion at the start of the turn! No waiting until your opponent charges you to quaff it.

Interesting build, but I would rather tatically play smarter and keep him out of combat all together. In many cases being tough to kill wont help him as combat res will kill him in the end anyway.

I like the idea to give him Fender's Blades - WS10 will make many ordinary troops hit him on 5+ as well.

best defensive build is take the 100 pts of magic items you were going to give him and buy some speedbumps to put between him and the enemy.

Here's a thought- If you're planning on putting your Heiro or another Mounted priest in a bunker of Horse Archers, you could pop the Potion first turn to keep him protected from a lucky snipe shot.

if you're going to bunker him in skeletons / tomb guard (and with the range of the buffs there's an argument here) this does make alot of sense.
I have to admit I got so annoyed at trying to keep heirophants alive I just stopped taking big ones and tried to work around their inevitable demise.

Here is a long term plan:
bring decent leadership, two princes or something, maybe a herald, and be unharmed when you hierophant dies, as nothing significantly crumbles.
after a few times, your opponents will stop allocating recources to the task.
or better yet:
don't do that, don't protect the hierophant, and be thankfull of the distraction it poses to your sily, sily enemy :P

i've gotten this to work a few times, between frenzy and my wide open hiero bunker i fed to him, my friend's 12 minotaurs ran after him. then flanked him on the side with 4 chariots and got the rear with 8 ushabti. sure, i lost the hiero, but he essentially lost his army.

I just simply resign myself to the fact if he's in combat that's a wrap, he's dead undead.
Bunker him in something and don't let him get into combat unless its turn 5-6 and he's done his army proud.
Besides, gearing him up like this negates his ability to load out an arcane choice depending on what that is of course.

Sticking the Hierophant in with Tomb Guard does bring up an interesting idea...
1. Most of my opponents avoid the Tomb Guard horde like the plague...
2. Hed be WS 10 so when the unit does get into combat he will be ok (95% of the time the Tomb Guard unit will only be in combat that one round due to its nastyness)
3. I can spend core points on something other than archer bunkers!
Davados1 - April 24, 2012 12:23 PM (GMT)
My best defense build for my HLP.... 40 archers!
He is important but 9/10 times he dies (which is hardly ever) is from magic that allows no saves of any kind.
In over 40 ish games he has only died once in combat, and that was because I challenged a Khorne Lord.....(it was funny)

I like the idea putting him in the Tomb Guard unit. 6+ Ward all around isn't bad on our elites. But lets say you get him the Obsidian Loadstone (M res 3) gives the unit of Tomb Guards a 3+ ward save against magic. That's worth alot against our heavy magic enemies who just love to nuke 'em. Sure it wont work against some spell, but like banishment it will help alot on the must reroll saves.
Since you will not buy the regular bunker of 60p of archers you can easy bust out these 45p.
Krael - April 25, 2012 07:27 AM (GMT)
sorry to nitpick, but regen doesn't stack with magic resistance.
it also doesn't reroll for bannishment.

Correct!
Magic resistance only stacks with Ward saves. The 6+ save that the hierophant gives is a regen save. So no stacking :/
Banishment does have a re roll, but it's for their passed Ward saves.
Putting a HLP in a unit of Tomb guard is really not advisable. Your tomb guard want/need to be in every fight, having a priest in the unit will only attract attacks and a high possibility that he will die easily.
Putting a priest in archers is the best choice (be they mounted or not). If placed in Skeleton warriors your still wasting points because the same principle applies as the TG, you want to keep him out of combat, so why not invest the extra 2pts per model and grab a shooting attack?
BlueberryPie - April 25, 2012 08:18 AM (GMT)
Ah right, thought of it with a 6+regen save was a tiny ward save. Dumb me ^^' But Nerus protection stacking with it gives a 2+ magic save. Which isn't that bad either.
I know the problematic with having a High Liche Priest in CC. But the tomb guards will probably not be in combat intill late turn 3 (msot of the times) so I say it's worth a shot since the tomb guards will be nuked like hell.
