Hi!
I played a match against the new High Elves not long ago. In short, he kicked my butt big time. I'm somewhat new to fantasy and don't know all the tricks yet, but it doesn't help when the guy I met is a fantasy pro with a solid list.
The biggest problem was his 3 elite units ( Phoenix Guard, Swordsmaster, White Lions ) and his 2 mages ( one lore of beasts to stop my chariots and one lore of fire to blast them to death ), but lets not forget that irritating Always Strikes First rule that the High Elves got now.
My list was about 50% infantry and 50% cavalry, 1 Tomb King in chariot, 2 Liche Priests, a Bone Giant and Tomb Scorpion. Also, the infantry and cavalry was a mix of every type.
Any ideas what I should do next time I meet him?
Make his three elite unit a point sink.
- Since they are infantry they are slow, depend on their rank for combat resolution and have little armor.
Since they are slow, get two screming skull catapult and just fire away. You can fire each catapult three times before their infantry gets to your side of the table. If you use yur incantations to fire on your magic phase you can double those shots.
their basic units of speramen and sea guard fight in three ranks, so charge them on their falnk or rear, never head on.
Use carrion and/or golem escorpions with "they came from above" to take out their bolt throwers
Use a lot of charots. The impact from the chariots come before combat, that means they come before the alway strike firsts rule or in this case the blood of asuryan rule.
I will drop the bone giant for a catapult, but if you can´t remember to never charge a unit of infantry head on, the bone giant will crumble just because of combat resolution.
Use crock & flail of radiance, or the spear of antharak for your king and prince. Don¨t bother with blade of setep , destroyer of eternities or great wepaons, the elves ar R 3 and infantry elves have little armor.
Maybe you can use you king on a chariot with the spear of anthrak(35), escoppion armor(40) and icon of icon of ruleship(20) as a mini hammer.
If he uses calvary or chariots, try to take them with a 25+ unit of skeleton warriors. Static combat resolution will make you win thw combat. Also remember chariots will be auto destroy if they are wound by a S7 hit. So there is another objetive or you catapult.
i've played 3 games against tyhe new HE... the only thing thats changed is that swordmasters eat stuff up way too good. DPs die pretty easily still, and rely on the charge. But a unit of swordmasters (especially with immunity to fear) and a character can chew through anything we can put on the table.
You dont have to play much differently, however one unit that is gold to my mind is 3-4 chariots plus TP with Chariot of Fire. when you are killing of 6-10 elves on the charge, the only unit that willl get meaningful attacks back is the spearelves, and they are the least worrying ones. So chariot hammer units rock, other than thatm, play like normal and avoid swordmasters. Get outnumbering and fear... only one unit in the army aint gonna be testing on double 1s after that.
