Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor...I've suddenly been overcome by a case of the vapors.

These are the most stunningly painted models I've ever laid eyes on!

Awesome haul, congratulations! So, you literally just walked in there and picked up a prize in every category you attended, huh. Those paint brush prizes actually look really good, I like the idea of the paint brush showing whether it's gold, silver or bronze.

Many thanks for the kind words!

It was a bit unexpected, since there were people being flown in from all corners of the world to participate. There are Crystal Brush 'qualifiers', and the winners of those are flown in to do the Crystal Brush contest at Adepticon.

That's why I figured it would be difficult to enter figs from my armies and come away with some glass tongue.gif cool.gif

Knowing that these are figures I play with (not just sitting in a case) was extra satisfying!

As I mentioned the other day, I had to throw together a quick chariot unit right before Adepticon.

Some images of that process, such as the beginning, where I had to asses how much of the old could be salvaged, and how to make it look like the one finished chariot...

Well,
You make me want to hide my TK army in the sand after seeing yours! Been playing and painting for about 12 years and I have never liked the "bright" colors on most armies as these (the Warhammer World) are dark times for all.
But after seeing your's, I have definitely changed my mind. Maybe that's because I could never make those colors work, they always looked like a cartoon :-) And you actually use them which makes it all the more better. Very Very Nice.

Many thanks! I had lots of conversations about the colors and the method behind them at Adepticon.

Essentially, the concept is to have the highest chroma (brightest, most saturated colors) be from the cooler section of the color wheel. The warmer colors are more muted and greyed down.

This allows what would normally be a receding color (such as blue or green) to stand out before the warmer color. This reverses the normal condition of the warmer colors emerging to the viewer before the cooler tones.

So, you can have these super bright flourescent colors everywhere and not set your eyeballs on fire wink.gif tongue.gif cool.gif

Here are some images of the emergency chariots being painted. As I mentioned, it all had to happen very quickly.

It was nice to see the unit completed after all this time. I am glad that I did not pirate all of them for Khandish chariots!

stunning work, not much else to say that others havent already said laugh.gif
i do understand the satisfaction in the fact that you entered your "playing pieces" into a comp that most others would be entering display cabinet material...
i kinda like that idea,it probably feels more rewarding too and i think more akin to the concept of how a painting comp for these mini's should be.
congrats on the crystal haul cool.gif
and thanks for sharing your wonderful and creative army with us.

I will have to give it another go with more bright colors, maybe I can make it work after seeing how you used them. Wish me Luck :-) On a side note, what are you using for sculpting putty? Green stuff hardens to fast for me, probably because I have to redo everything i try a couple of times before I get it somewhat looking the way I want it. I have no aspirations of doing things like you do but some little stuff to add to models, not entire figures like yours. I know my limitations and entire figs are not for my skill level. But I will keep trying. thanks for the help.

When it comes to doing small things on miniatures, I still use green stuff (the Apoxy sculpt is almost exclusively for scratch sculpting).

One thing you could try is to change the mixture of your green stuff. For instance, try mixing more of the yellow than the blue. This makes a softer, easier to work with putty. It also takes a little longer to harden.

I use this type of mix when I am doing more detailed work. The opposite is true for things where I need more strength, such as flowing cloaks, etc. Then I mix in more blue than yellow.

I hope this helps!

Many thanks! cool.gif

The horsemen units will be a lot of fun. I already have the bases finished, and the horses built. The extra armor will have to be added with the green stuff press moulds, and the skeletons themselves need to be added as well.

I was able to get some of the old metal TG to mix in with the plastic sets. I was thinking of doing a giant unit of those folks.

I also want to create a few small skeleton archer units on a different types of movement trays which are more like the upper levels of the tomb complex... sand, broken pillars, and so on.

I am also going to make myself a Khalida. biggrin.gif

Hey Jim-
I can hook you up with some old TG if you want. Lemme know.

Speaking of TG, how have you dealt with some of the definition issues on the current models? I find the wraps blend into bones too much and just go with "screw it" as my technique. You?

Is that a Colossus up there with the bow?

@Joe: I will do some counting and see what will be needed to make this unit. Some more of the 'old timers' would be appreciated. happy.gif

Yes, indeed, those definition issues came up time and again, to my dismay. My first thought was to sculpt additional wrappings of my own, which I did a few times. Time constraints often forced me to simply paint in the definition.

Obviously, this is what pushed me in the direction of the older figures. It also made me prefer the older skeletons, modified to have wrappings and armor. Is there no end to our suffering?

That is a Colossus. I have a number of blog posts relating to the sculpting of that figure, as well as the Titan.

Hey folks!

After all the dozens of GW skeletal horses I painted for the Tomb Kings, it was very interesting to paint a different brand... this time from Reaper.

If you look at the joints, they are much more complicated that the GW version. The heads of the GW skelehorse are a bit cleaner, but this guy seems to have a little more realism in those joints.

It gave me some more areas to add a bit of shading and color interest...

I have to commend you on your "magic green/turquoise". It's a very hard colour to pull off, nearly everyone who tries, fails. Your prize-winning riding liche priest looks fantastic.
