I have a problem, my girlfriend is getting into warhammer and she has decided to play Wood Elves. Now I have played a couple games against wood elves and I have yet to lose a unit. I want the games I play with her to be fun so I am asking you to please post tactics that Wood Elves have employed agianst you that worked well so I can help her write a list where she can actualy have some kind of impact on my army. Thank you in advace for helping me with this odd request.

+++ I'll take a crack at this. I also play WE so from what I've been able to get to work in 8th is only a few units but they are good. Eagles are always great and I usually use 2, lots of units of glade guard I tend to use several 18 man units banner(because of fortitude mission) and musc. Then we have two 14 man units of dryads and a unit of 6 treekin, not upgrades in either. A large ten man unit of wildriders with full comm. Waywatchers are nice as well and use a big unit of ten second unit if points of the battle are high enough. A level four caster with Lore of Life and the wand of wych elm usually a good ward save as well. Eternal guard got better but you have to invest characters and alot of points to make them work. That's what I field the best way to field them is to concentrate your fire and make sure you kill whatever you're shooting at before you move on. Shooting is great but you know they will get to you so keep all the evil cc units moving so that they are set up to charge where you want/need them to. Eagles are wonderful warmachine hunters and so are waywatchers they both are good in cc so they shouldn't hold back if they have a chance to kill a mortar or whatnot. Two far better sources of info that myself are

Also, remember that you're *teaching* her, not playing in a tournament. So play a couple of games where you guys go over every move -- you can talk out what moves might be good, where she might charge to do the most damage, and what spells go well together. Don't do this condescendingly, but rather in the manner of "I've been playing this game for a lot longer and I want to pass on some of my tactics." I do this a lot when I'm testing lists for tournaments; I sit down with my boyfriend and we play a game where I say "you know, I'm not sure where I would do the most damage with this dreadnought, where would you least like me to charge?" It's about having a conversation together and learning those tactics!

Having my sig other as 1 of four main opponents... remember 2 things, its a friendly game, and always try to keep a happy tone. DON'T ACT SUPRIZED if things go their way (trust me here it comes accrossed as you didn't think they could do well). Third - WE, always have her skirmishing units moving out of your front arcs. Remind her that our units are slow and show her the best ways to keep her army moving. I play WE and when I win is when my army keeps moving. Remind her that all her skirimshing units (like scouts - waywatchers - wildriders[fast cav not skirmisher] - and hawk riders [yes i use them to warmashine hunt, more expensive then an eagle much higher success rating for me]) can MARCH and still fire, and reform ANY number to times DURRING the march and fire, and do so WITHOUT any penilties to hit.
Since she is a newer player, and its a friendly game, also teacher her about pirotiy targets. Make sure she knows before she shoots the sphinx thats its going to be 'really hard to kill' like either it will need all her bows for a turn or multiple turns to down. Let her know multiple times where your heirophant is and what happens when he dies (even experienced players sometimes forget this). This is hard to do and not sound like you are talking down to her, so always ask her before each game if she wants you to do this, and if she says no, then don't, its that simple. -- I find that in doing stuff like this, that the player 'should' know anyways helps keep everyone in a friendly atmosphere, which is key. Last peice of advice - remember its just a game, NEVER GET MAD AT EACHOTHER OVER A GAME -- its just dumb to fight over silly things. -------------------- - Of course you should fight FIRE with FIRE... ... You should fight EVERYTHING with FIRE !!
Is it wrong to want everyone to share in the happiness of eternal undeath ?!? Its WD. They always change the rules for their battle reports. |

Thank you for the feed back. I had honestly abandoned this topic... I know how to play teaching games, I have had to teach all my local friends how to play. I think part of the issue for her is that she is comming from Tyranids to wood elves. She is finding the tranfer difficult. We go over the moves, and try everything we can short of cheating to get her army to beat mine. They just cant do it. And we have played enough that when I made a couple of bad choices intentionaly to give her a chance she called the game (fortunatly she wasnt mad it just made that game worthless) I just dont know what to do.

As you said you've tried all the teaching games and if she's into table top games then the enthusiasms there, maybe just do a series of smaller games - maybe scenario driven so as it doesn't seem too imbalanced or just try out a series of units you'd not normally field.
Example, have lots of impassable terrain and put out your chariots - sure it's bending the scenario to suit her but as you said WE aren't suited to 8th blocks and the speed in which units close with each other doesn't help a shooty army. MSU? Tried that? Cbt answers on a post card to... -------------------- Clickable links below.
Tomb King Armies Forum Moderator guide lines armies forum, summary below A: Constructive criticism - No one's right it's just their opinion B: Proper full answers - don't just say it's rubbish, explain why (see A above) C: Unrealistic lists - fun lists are all well and good but don't expect many comments unless you can prove you have the figures - you have how many Bone Giants? D: Don’t expect a review of larger armies, as they have more troops available to them and more options available critiquing this kind of list is a somewhat mute point as there are too many variables and is usually done to personal opinion or army theme. E: Taking criticism - Your opinion my differ from others, if you don't like it don't post your list for review. See A above. F: Try not to state the obvious - we all know a chariot is pulled by a horse, don't waste space and list it - see Suggested format below. Suggested format of your armies Rules book changed July 10th 2010 - all army lists should be based on this 8th Edn My Current 2000 point army My Entire Army as at 10/08/2007 6th edition changed to 7th on the 9th September 2006 |

Hi.
Use "role-playing"- army list, rather than competition - list. use "role-playing" - scenerario- you trying to invade her forest realm. Build her heavy shooting list - I recon WE are good at shooting. But, for me, this might be a problem of making good WE list against TK- WE alltogether seems to be one of the weakest armies around at the moment. I think "Teclis" is very compentent WE player, he ( she?) might be able to help more on this topic. - Dlock PS. oops, I noticed that this is good 6 months ago that this topic was started... oh well, better late than never ( or is it?)... PPS. I love my Post Scriptum ('s). ( Dont know Latin enough to know how that should be done in plural). |
