After lighting up the Warsphinx and Casket I decided I was addicted to this type of modeling and just couldn't help myself. Here is the beginnings of my Necro with LED blades to show just how cool decapitating strike really is.

Let me know what you think. Also, any suggestions so far? Any recommendations on a good clear, workable medium to transfer the light a little better?

As a side note, check out how the arms are posed differently in the pictures. It was actually a pretty cool bonus I didn't even realize till building but the wires going from the torso to the arms actually hold them in place well enough that I didn't have a need for glue and allows me to re-position the arms.

I like the lines of archers in the background behind your keyboard there. The darth maul look is definately cool on the necro sphynx. You need to take these things to a painting competition or something so you can win the prizes you rightyfully deserve.

VERY cool!
I lit the lantern on my VC Black coach. It needs to be on it mini display board to light up though. I made the switch a stake with a skele on it so you dont see how it's turned on. The battery is housed in a... cairn? some road side structure.

I probably could have removed the vamp in the back and blacked out the windows and housed it in there. I do have a second one..... Hm....

Anyways, WAY cool keep it up!!!

Very nice one Hypnos! Should be pretty cool with all your big models lighted up like that!

What could be cool also is a green light in the tail for the scorpion dart. So you could turn it on when you have the option and such, but then it would be usefull only on a Warsphinx. It should look striking though, so I'd like to see that! wink.gif

Thanks for the advice guys. Great ideas! I went ahead and added a light to the head which just looks much cooler than I thought it would. I've got the tail almost completely drilled out but I have to pick up some green LEDs. I agree that the green would give it some pop. I'll never take poison on the guy but it will at least look good.

Check out the updated pictures and keep the good ideas coming!

I'm thinking of filling the tail with hot glue. in a couple tests it does well dispersing the light and is also opaque enough to hide the actual LED.

Nice idea with the hot glue. I was wondering how you were going to do that.

Where are you going to hide the battery?

I think the solid-glue-filled light up green tail would looks so stunning you'd HAVE to waste the points on poison sting hehe!

Awesome job... inspiring stuff!

This is some incredible effort, well done. The head is looking fantastically intimidating. Just make sure you dim the lights when you use him for maximum effect. smile.gif

I finally made it out to a radio shack and picked up some different color LEDs so I could finish the tail. I saw think one LED there that said it was a 7 color LED so I had to get it. It actually turned out pretty awesome because now when I first turn the guy on the tail blinks different colors and the head and hands blink along with it then the tail goes into a select mode so I can choose the color I want.

The hot glue and multi color turned out better than I had thought. I've still got a bit of cleaning up to do around the edges but I'll wait for it to completely harden. Check out the new pictures and tell me what you think.

Also, should I go for the same multi color led in the hands and head or just stick to the red theme. I think the contrast is going to turn out pretty cool looking but I'm open for suggestions. So far you guys have given me great feed back that is making this thing so much better. Thanks again!

O yeah, and for the battery, I'll just make another little pyramid type thing like my other sphinx has:

Yeah, those turned out great. As for the colour choice, I would stick with just the single colour LEDs myself or you might run the risk of it coming off like some kind of freaky Christmas decoration. Red looks cool but I guess it all depends on the colours you've painted your other stuff.

Do you ever do anything with a programmable lighting sequence via an arduino board or the like? How about magnetic and sound activated switches to have them react to things happening on the table?

...It would be so awesome if the glowing blades were activated by someone saying "Decapitating strike!". Would just be an extra awesome thing (in my opinion), but hardly necessary because its already incredible biggrin.gif

Very good point. I'll stick to leaving one color up. My army scheme is basically bone/sand, metals, and red so I'll probably stick to red or green.

Actually I haven't. I've been wanting to get into arduino so this may be the perfect excuse to start. My circuits so far have just been switches or at most a 555 timer to blink at variable speeds.

I hadn't thought of using magnets and sound to activate the lights. That's a great freaking idea. I may have to limit it to a display board though because model space is pretty already.

Haha awesome. I was thinking of leaning more towards picking up any sound or even listening for dice hitting the table. The magnets would be cool to so that if two units ended up in combat together they would do something different.

I was trying to figure out where I could put a button in to change the tail color and it turns out that the skull plate thing on his back if perfect. It does well hiding the button and actually turns the whole plate into a button. I love when things come together so nicely. If only the dice could do the same.

My wife does a lot of this stuff in her art quilting. If you want to see some examples, check out

Wow I would have never thought of combining quilts and LED electronics but those are actually pretty awesome looking. Thanks for the links!

Thanks again to everyone for the cool suggestions. I'm almost there in terms of getting this guy wrapped up now. It really does look a whole lot better than it did and I think where the lit blades would have attracted people in for a closer look from a table away, the tail is just going to catch people's eyes from across the room.

I've still got a couple details here and there to clean up (as well as the base) but then I'll be ready for paint. I'll post those pictures when I finish up but check out the guy so far. I apologize for the exposure in the pictures. The lights are turning out a to still be pretty bright even without direct angles. I'm showing the different colors in the tail but I think the green is still a top choice.

Definitely the purple. The green has too much contrast, and is Christmasy. The purple stands out just enough to make the tail something different, without being distracting.

Finally done painting!! at least for now because I have to get some other stuff table ready. O and I have to make the whole base thing.

Any way check out the semi-complete night time friendly necro. It turned out pretty well although covering up the lights in the blades were tough and my painting skills have a long way to go.

I'll be sure to put up some better pictures after basing and include the warsphinx and casket.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.
