Since I don't want to clog up this part of the forum will lots of individual posts of various titles, I will follow the lead of other painters here and continuously add onto one "army progress" thread.

This first post will unveil the new display board I am building.

Here is a basic sketch that I made a while back of my display board for my Armies on Parade Tomb Kings army. There have been some alterations since this original drawing, mostly on the upper level. The large figure on top is my scratch sculpted Heirotitan.

user posted image

There will be a wall/gate on the back of the top level that will have images of the King and the new "God" to which the King has pledged his service. It will show how he made this pact in the hopes of becoming mortal once again.

Also on the upper level, you can see some grave robbers digging away at the tomb beneath. They are from the Empire. One of them will have dropped a torch down into the tomb itself, as in Indiana Jones. Creeping up behind them are some of the Carrion.

While the surface level will have mostly broken monuments, sand and debris, the tomb level will be relatively pristine. The floor will be done just like the floor on the Casket of souls that was posted a few days ago.

Obvisouly, the higher ranking units such as the Casket and chariots will be found inside the tomb. It wil also depend on what units will fit inside! biggrin.gif

In the alcoves will stand the Ushabti, with all sorts of designs and cartouches telling the history behind the army. I will also be using LED lights and fibre optics to create a pallid greenish glow inside the Tomb. This is intended to make sure people can see what's going on in there, even in the notoriously dim lighting of the convention hall. ninja.gif

The Columns will have many designs and hieroglyphs painted on them, and even the ceiling will have a representation of the Heavens, similar to that which was done in Egyptian tombs.

Some of the restrictions on the overall design come from the display area for Armies on Parade. I know I have to deal with the sneeze guards, which means that I have to deal with a pretty shallow angle. The final board will have less of the upper level showing, hence the need for that back wall/gate.

I will post WIP images of the board as it is constructed! Also, you can read the story behind this army in the stories part of the forum, so be sure to look for that!

Wow. ohmy.gif

Even from the sketches you can see that this is going to turn out pretty spectacular. Should be able to crank this one out in an hour or two no problem, eh? blink.gif

I really like the idea of doing a three dimensional display piece (rather than just a flat board). I had thought about doing the side aspect of a pyramid as the back 'wall' with a grand plaza in front of it as mine, but I think the 'cavern' style you've got in mind will work way better and really make your army into the mother of all psuedo dioramas.

Can't wait to watch your progress on this one as your casket really blew me away (I'm always in awe of people who can do freehand to that standard as it's something I'm just not very good at).

Aside from the obligatory Hirst arts pieces, what were you going to use in the way of materials? Pink foam maybe?

This, I suspect, will be the crowning glory in your modelliing work if you can pull it off... and judging by what I've seen thus far I believe you will. cool.gif

Thanks for the kind words!

Actually, no Hirst block will be harmed in the creation of the army board. biggrin.gif

I will be using foam, foam core, cardboard, sculpey and Apoxy sculpt, among other things...like random junk. rolleyes.gif

This thread should give you an idea of what will happen:

Also, the Khalida diorama techniques will be used.

Can't wait!!!!! laugh.gif

I just completed this monstrous project today!

user posted image

I have a ton of pictures in the first blog thread here (a second one will be needed for all the pictures!)...
http://wappellious.blogspot.com/2012/06/re...-kings-for.html

I know there will be some questions about the blankets on the horses. I will be showing the WIP images of how those were done when I get to the blog post on the chariot unit.

There is already a lot going on with this piece. laugh.gif

First, a shot of the base:

These look amazing. Pretty much what I wanted my army to look like but I lack the skills to pull it off. Probably my favorite TK's yet.

Cant wait to see more!

What shop will you be entering it at? We can't have two TK armies competing at the same one wink.gif.

Plus you obviously win everything all the time, so I want to make my effort for this leg at least worthwhile.

The army board probably won't be started up for real until this weekend.

I have done all sorts of "re" planning of the board, based on the change in lighting that was unforseen, and how I want to portray the story of the army. The fibre optics will just be a secondary light source, while the big LED lights will provide the illumination. cool.gif

It will also be more practical. It should fit under the sneez guards better, and it will hold down the minis via magnetism, vs me having to cary a second box just for the army.

I have purchased the metallic paint/primer from Home Deopt, so I will be using that to experiment on some small things in the next day or two.

That stuff weighs a ton! blink.gif

Thanks for all the kind words!!!

Now here is something quite different. wink.gif I have finished the first few of the tropical bird carrion...

user posted image

Here is the blog post with a bunch more images:
http://wappellious.blogspot.com/2012/06/lo...-armies-on.html

For those who have ready the story of the army in the 'Stories' page, you already know these were coming. tongue.gif I have the snippet right here that describes them for those who have not:

Far from restoring the glory of my kingdom, its cities fell into further ruin. Even my own Tomb City was not to be spared, though it suffered from a different manner of violation. Once a shining city of gold, almost none was to be found. These treasures had not been stolen away by looters, but instead had transformed into what looked like silver. It was not any form of silver familiar to me. Rather, it would constantly change in color and even in form, as if it were quicksilver. The braziers in the temples and tombs now glowed in strange colors of azure, green and even purple. The flames would seem to burn blue hot, yet they cast no warmth. Instead, the coldest chill I could imagine emanated from them. Even the carrion were different. Their feathers had turned the shades of exotic birds that I used to keep in my palace. Some now had a second head, mirroring the God.

These birds will be going after those hapless Empire guys who have dug into the tomb (see army board above).

Truely amazing work!!!
I have started making my display boards functional too; they have large open slots in the back for the books, and i may retrofit my TK one to have one of the pilons open up to fit my dice. I like the idea of plunking it down and having it all there...

How big will this be in order to fit a good sized army?

The board wil be 24" x 26". I am trying to sneak a few inches on the back of the board, since the sneeze guards at Games Day have a pretty shallow angle.

The idea is that I can have the back of the board extend off the table a tiny bit, which would allow me to have the wall/gate in the back.

That back wall is where most of the graphics will be. It will be light.. just foam, and no miniatures back there either.

I am going to use the magnet primer, which I am hoping will hold down all my units as I carry the whole monstrosity into the convention center! unsure.gif

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that! Thanks for reminding me... rolleyes.gif

Since I was not happy with how either the horsmen or chariots were performing (or skeletons, stalkers, ssc's, and liches for that matter), I began pirating those parts for base decorations, LOTR Khandish chariots, Army of the Dead cavalry, and finally, Carrion parts! laugh.gif

I used the rib cages for the ribs on the carrion with open chests, while the horse legs were modified to become bird legs. I think I even used more horse legs as legs for my Tomb Spider...

Amazing how Khandish Chariots do everything TK chariots can't. The Khandish King on a chariot hits like a Kaddai Destroyer, and not an origami tricycle. cool.gif

Ah, you should not despair blink.gif

You must keep in mind that I have been at this forever, and I have been able to test crash thousands of miniatures during that time wink.gif

When I think back to what my first miniatures were like.. how long they took, compared to what I do now, you would never be convinced it was the same person. ninja.gif

I kow I spent many hours looking at galleries on Cool mini or not, studying things, testing you name it. I still test new techniques and colors every single day.

It's almost always about the practice... over and over again.
