Sometimes people are mean. But they don't always mean it. I think I made growing up much more difficult by not being able to tell whether someone was joking or not.

Yeah. It's kind of hard to figure out where you are coming from if we don't know what you're talking about...

As far as internet behavior, there's greed, jealously, and pride that are the main sources of conflict. People just don't want to seen as the weaker one of the two in an argument, so they'll carry it on for as long as they deem necessary. Keep in mind that relations online are different from real life. People feel they can do wild things, just because they're anonymous.

That sounds about right. I've seen online arguments that kind of carry on and devolve into name calling because niether side is willing to back down. It gets especially bad when the subject being argued over is a controversial or personal one, and whenever politics in general comes into play.

The best thing you can do in a situation like that is to learn when to just walk away from the argument and drop it.

On the other hand, arguments can escalate over stupid stuff as well (and I do mean stupid). Two people just sharing their opinions can turn into a flame-war pretty quickly. The worse I've seen was someone who tried flaming me after I complimented a video.

Seriously?

Is the 'I'm right forever because my opinions are fact everybody else shut the fuck up forever' attitude getting that bad?

Probably.

I get caught up in flame wars sometimes. I don't even try to, it just happens. It doesn't help that the internet doesn't have ANY amount of time where a conversation dies. In real life, you can't respond after a day or a few hours. But on the net conversations can go on and on and on ...

If anyone gives you shit, ignore. Don't respond. Don't say anything. Just ignore. There will be cases of people starting flame wars. Most of the time, it's bets not to get involed.

Holding grudges is chidish, as well for bringing up old issues that the person doesn't want to talk about.

If something is buggering you, ignore or talk to someone about it. They can make you feel better. Don't have other people join in the flame fest.

The only exception is when your in a transaction involving money/valuable goods... which is why that doesn't belong on forums.
