The Importance of Zoo Beauty
Beauty is an important, if often overlooked, element of a zoo's success. It affects both the Zoo Rating and Guest Happiness, which are often key scenario objectives. Determining the overall aesthetic appeal of your creation isn't a one step process. What may strike the fancy of a boy might not sit well with his mother. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Zoo Tycoon recognizes four distinct beholders: they are woman, man, boy, and girl. For a well rounded zoo you'll need to learn to please them all. The Bane of Zoo Beauty It's probably under your kitchen sink right now, just begging to be emptied. That's right, it's trash. Nothing burns the nose and waters the eyes like a heaping pile of rubbish. Likewise, nothing will make your Zoo Beauty rating plummet faster than garbage. Beyond the litter itself, trashcans come in a close second. Whether they're empty or spilling out into the pathways, they'll mark a big negative on the aesthetic appeal of any tile they inhabit. It's not easy, but the trick is placing just enough trashcans to accommodate the waste your guests produce. You'll need to make sure you have trashcans around large traffic areas, rest areas, food and drink stands, and vending machines, but you probably won't need to place them in low traffic areas. The best solution for trash management is to hire enough maintenance workers to keep your cans emptied and your paths clean. Be Aware, Be Very Aware It's fairly obvious that a water fountain or a mermaid statue will help spruce up your zoo. However, the superior zoo designer knows that it's the little (and often less expensive) touches like decorative fencing, hedges, and flowerbeds that give your zoo an overall aesthetic beauty. Upgrading paths from dirt to brick can do wonders, as will adding lamps to light your exhibits and rest areas. Oft-overlooked items that will aid in your design Decorative fencing (such as picket or cast iron) Hedges Zoo Map Lamps or torches Flowerbeds Expensive pathways (like brick or cobblestone) Logic is the Key Your guests are the determining factor in rating your Zoo Beauty, so if you place an object that's not likely to be seen by a lot of guests, you're really not doing yourself any favors. Keep these tips in mind: Make sure you're placing your items in heavy traffic areas, such as rest areas. Dress up areas around trashcans and restrooms to counter their negative impact. Flowerbeds, large or small, are particularly useful in this capacity as they don't take up much space. Decorative items can also be used functionally. For example, try using decorative fencing around pathways to regulate traffic. This will ensure your guests don't go wandering off, as is their tendency. You get what you pay for; if you want a fountain with the highest aesthetic value, buy the most expensive fountain. I'll give you good odds that the more money you lay out, the better ratings you'll get in return. Places of Interest There are number of key spots you'll want to focus on when touching up your zoo: Zoo entrance Intersections Exhibit viewing areas Attraction and concession entrances Areas around restrooms Rest areas Keep in mind that while Zoo Beauty is important to overall zoo success, it can take time and money away from your first priority: your animals. As with any single area of zoo operation, too much effort in one area can mean others are neglected, resulting in a lower Zoo Rating. Plan your aesthetic improvements from a time and budget standpoint, and you should see a steady improvement in Zoo Rating. |

Very useful if you want your Zoo to have a sense of beauty and not all be bunched up in 1 place with absolutely no scenery whatsoever.
