Title: college education
Description: is it worth it?

trader - May 4, 2012 03:37 PM (GMT)
Colleges & universities all over the U.S. are teaching left-wing, socialist, or communist crap to our young people. Meanwhile, the cost to go to these colleges keeps going up. Obama was blabbing about how it cost over $100,000 a year to go to one of these elite colleges to listen to the likes of Bill Ayers, an advowed domestic terrorist who is a "tenured professor", Frances Fox Piven, Travis Smiley, Dr. Caroline Heldman, Cornell West, & other radical left-wing wackos. Even the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff recently had Louis Farrakhan give a lecture there! Almost half of todays "college graduates" either are un-employed or under employed & are having to move back in with their parents. Last night on Hannity, he had one of the "occupy wall street" bunch on. The "occupyer" who is a college "graduate" said that the government should furnish "free" housing, health care, education, on down the line. When Hannity asked him who would pay for this, he said he wasn't sure & he is a "college graduate"! I know everyone says if you don't have a college education, you will have a harder time but GOOD GRIEF!!! This college bum said he was going back to get his "Masters Degree". Is it any wonder this country is circling the bowl? :downer:

Trader great post lots of info here.

I did find one little tiny issue it's all :bullS: :bullS: :bullS:

According to the department of labor as of April 2012
The unemployment rate of college grads is on the rise. From 4.2 in 2010 to 4.4% in 2011 but in 2012 April it dropped to 4.0.
The only way that your statement is correct is if you are rounding up to the nearest "almost half"
It's down around 3% for those with a masters degree. All your bitching about left wing wackos seems a little mis placed

did you go to college because they didn't teach that stuff when I went. You don't seem to know what they teach. As I recall they taught me to think. That is why college people are smarter than non college people. They can think smarter...

I did find that as much as 85% of college grads do move back in with their parents. Sounds bad unless you look at all the facts. Its not because they are too broke and cant do it on there own. I know people who work for min wage and live alone. Today's parents are different than generations back... Most welcome their kids back until they get a better footing. It's just good parenting to insure a financially healthier adult. How long do the kids stay with their parents. Some stay for an extended period but most don't.

Hannity is a fox correspondent I think, so if he is reporting this :bullS: Maybe you should rethink who is a wacko

Who is to say that that was a real occupyer, who is to say thay that "occupyer" wasn't a plant. Just saying what ever his script was dictating. Real occupyer do not respect fox. You know hannity isn't really known for his ethics or being a real news man.

To equate liberals or left or democrats or liberal independents with socialist and communist, is just plain ignorant. It really makes the right sound stupid, ignorant, uneducated. I did learn about that stuff in college but to know what it is. They didn't teach me that to convert me but to educate me.

You can be smart and not go to college. You can be stupid and go to college. You will be smarter if you go to college. That is only a fact of the matter. College = smart. No college = no smart

Mad7, you crack me up. Welcome back. Although I know that you've been here all along. :thumb:

When you sit down and think hard about what's really important in life, a higher education is way over-rated. <_<

Mad, if you think ideas aren't being espoused in universities then you're either naive or in denial.

"Good parenting"? :fpalm: Supporting your grown kids is not "parenting" them. But most of those situations probably are the by-product of a certain type of parenting, alright.

What are you insinuating about Mr. Hannity's ethics? From what I've seen, he seems to hold values similar to my own. Just because you may not share those values doesn't mean that he doesn't or I don't have good ethics.

Has the Dept of Labor released facts on how many college grads have quit looking for jobs? Since the unemployment rate released by the administration is a bit skewed and does not include these individuals I am rather curious as to what percentage of the 14.5% total unemployed are college grads. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has calculated that the total unemployment has reached the 14.5% mark. Sure is a bit lower than the current administartions figures!!!

What makes you think that college people are smarter than non-college educated folks? Sure books are great but you don't have to go to school to read books or listen to left-leaning professors. If I remember correctly didn't Nancy Pelosi say that the Health Care Bill needed to be passed first so people could what was in it? Aren't most bills drafted and posted prior to being voted on so the American public will have the chance to read them and make their own decision as to whether they want the Bill or not instead of acting like sheep and just letting it be crammed down their throat!!!

Why is it stupid to equate liberals or left or democrats or liberal independents with socialist and communist? I can't remeber ever seeing a conservative communist or socialist in the USA. Have you seen one Mad7? If you have I sure would like to know about it and who it was?

College = smart and no college = no smart!!! That has got to be the statement of the century. Lets look at this a little closer. 70% of all of todays teachers come from the bottom 30% of their graduating class!!! Why? Because they can still party hard every night and pass the easy curriculum. Just because they party hard and make a 2.0 average and go into a field where they get tenure....I just don't see where that makes them smarter other than they know how to play the system!!!

Now because of this we as a nation have fallen from #2 in the world in Math and Science down to around #19. We send our kids to schools where the NEA and their unions control the kids, control the teachers and control the dumbed down curriculum so we can have a dumber society and child care at school!!!

Yep college = smart and no college = no smart!!!!! HAHA!!!

Sometimes, a higher education degree is about sticking with it and finishing something. I went to "night school" while I was on active duty. I got started because the Commandant of the Marine Corps ordered everyone above a certain pay grade (rank/rate) to be actively involved in off-duty education of some sort. That was 1984.

Since then I have always worked on educating myself about things and taking a different viewpoint. Doesn't mean I have to take the viewpoint as mine and doesn't mean the viewpoint is best. It is education. I am now just inches away from a PhD in environmental policy (political science crossed with hug-a-tree people). I like learning new things and exploring, it enriches me.

College does that also.

That is great. I hope you get that PhD. I have nothing against folks that go to college. I do have a problem with folks that go to college and come out thinking that people that do not go to college are stupid or somehow below the IQ scale as Mad7 implies. He seems to have a serious 'I'm better than thou' attitude. :nono:

If I am acting that way then I am an a$$... I think that I am right. I think you know I am right. So the only way to debate what I said is to discredit me. Lets see. I will try to tell you why I thing the posters in this thread are wrong.

There is only a handful of men like this. There is 300,000,000 people in the United states. you are using the exceptions to the rule. To say that the population would be better off to not get an education and do what this handful of people did to be successful is just ignorant.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics comes up with new number each month. These stats are the same numbers that the "current administrations" use.
That 14% mark. I don't know what that is or where you got that. There is not current way to show the numbers of people that quit looking before they find a job. The only way we track the unemployment rate is with The Bureau of Labor Statistics. all other numbers are just estimates. sometimes exaggerated to make a better story for the news or a political party. It is the same standard we have used since The Bureau of Labor Statistics was established.

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf

This web site has all the info. It does show that the less education you have the more likely you are to be unemployed.

If you are under 19 you account for 24% of the 8.1% of Americans out of work
If you drop out of High School you account for 14% of the 8.1% of Americans out of work
college degree you account for 4.5% of the 8.1% of Americans out of work

This clearly shows that the more education you have the more likely you are to be employed.

Based on these numbers smart = college because educated people know they are more likely to make more money if they go to school. Uneducated people think they are smart like college people because they read books, or are just some how smart. Reading books make you smarter. Who is to say you are smart enough to understand what you read. or to be an expert in what you read.
I am sorry to say that just reading books will not make you as smart as, well you know

I could never find this anywhere. Well if you google it, it brings you to the mena forum.com I have to say that it is insulting to good teachers. I do think that the bottom 30% of college grads are smarter that most non grads.

I am not saying that everything that you guys say if wrong. I do see that you mix so many facts with not facts that your message gets really screwed up.
The real question is, is it worth it to get a college education. The facts say YES. That should be the end of it. Go to school. You people debate with me just because you thing you know who I am. Liberal. Yes I think supporting you kids at any age is GOOD PARENTING. I think you do all you can do to make your kids they best they can be. Change the words a little to discount me some how. Shame on you. You want to be right about everything even if we agree.
Exaggerating the truth is the same as a lie. It is wrong. Dare I say ignorant. I think the truth should stand on its own.

YES GO TO SCHOOL IT IS WORTH IT.

slingshot - May 11, 2012 11:41 PM (GMT)
I think that it's wonderful for some folks to get a higher education. But it's not for everyone. My son is a good example. In high school he never studied, never brought homework home, and ended up quitting and getting his GED. Before quitting he was twice listed in the Who's Who of National Honor Roll Students. At least I believe that is the correct name of the book. Now he works in the oilfield and can still run circles around anyone on just about any subject. School is great for some and not so great for others. Some people learn more through life experiences. You had a good experience in college. I did not. Thanks to a professor from Berkely. Liberal a$$hole. :coverlaugh:

lance - May 12, 2012 03:36 AM (GMT)
Mad7 I feel sorry for you. Of course my post was a jab, poking fun if you will, but an educated person would have known that. I too went to college, and I have to agree, that furthering your education is a good thing, BUT, there are many ways to do it, and college is not the answer for all. Dare I say that more folks would benefit more by attending a trade school or an apprenticeship rather than college. What I learned in college was simply this, "facts be damned, if you don't agree with the professor, then you are wrong" I had this one History Prof who was so liberal in his leanings that he would stop class and spend the entire time berating someone who professed to be conservative, ( this was a great tactic for students to use when they weren't prepared for a pop quiz or test), so education of others rated second place to trying to show the poor soul, who chose conservative views, the error of their ways.

College should be a place of higher LEARNING, but instead has become a place of forced indoctrination. My overall college experience was very good, and I wouldn't change a thing, but I disagree that a college education is a fast track to a better job, better life, better earnings, or higher IQ. No doubt that you will find a higher concentration of intellectuals on a campus somewhere, but we all know what an intellectual is don't we? It is an educated idiot.

skillsaw - May 12, 2012 05:15 AM (GMT)
Mad7, if you would not want to succeed like Sam Walton, you have achieved that goal. But to say its ignorant you need to change your smoke, It dont make you smarter than everybody else because you go to collage, Our education system is only as good as the teachers, I my self have a GED Compared to you a am a genius, thats not sayen much. lol
