IM Ben Finegold is now one draw away from his final GM norm at the SPICE Cup "B" tournament, taking place at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He has 5.5/7, and he will have White tomorrow against FM Danny Rensch. In the final round on Sunday, Ben will have Black against GM Eugene Perelshteyn. Interestingly, Danny himself is in the hunt for an IM norm, and will need half a point tomorrow if he wins against GM Vinay Bhat today.

Good luck to all norm-seekers.

Sincerely,

Non-GM Mark J. Finegold

That's it. FM Danny Rensch agreed to a draw after losing a pawn and being forced into a boring endgame with zero winning chances. Having reached six points, IM Ben Finegold is now a GM-elect. I'm sure the entire Michigan chess community will join me in extending congratulations to our state's only home-grown International Grandmaster.

Mazel tov,

Mark J. Finegold

The 80th FIDE Congress, recently concluded in Greece, has approved Ben's GM title. The full list of approved titles is available at http://www.fide.com/component/content/arti...-fide-congress-. Congratulations once again to Michigan's only home-grown International Grandmaster.

Sincerely,

Mark J. Finegold
