Just to post one of the first replies, I really do like how they have nominated Kagin Lee who we have worked with before as the Referee.

The volunteer support is/was amazing in Rochester so my question is about the support in this area?

From Matthew T. Olson Sports Sales Manager for Waukesha & Pewaukee Bid (he had trouble posting)
____________________________________________________

Thank you for the inquiry regarding the Waukesha & Pewaukee bid.

The Rochester organizing committee certainly does an excellent job of recruiting and organizing volunteers. It is for that reason that we have asked Mitch Seidenfeld to be a part of the Waukesha & Pewaukee organizing committee (and he has generously agreed to help). Mitch has significant experience with organizing volunteers. Also, local volunteers were crucial for the success of our 4-star 2008 Badger Open last September. We are confident that we can again rely on the table tennis community in southeastern Wisconsin to volunteer their time in order to host a successful national championship. We’ll also be utilizing resources from the local Volunteer Center to publicize the need for assistance with this event.

Thank you for this very detailed bid. By lack of better questions, here is a surprise one:

Every year, NCTTA's goal is to at least slightly improve on one or other aspect of the National Championships. What, in your opinion, may be an area of innovation or potential improvement coming from the Waukesha and Pewaukee Bid with regard to the 2010 champs?

A question from 2009's Tournament Referee, Kagin Lee:

I should make it clear that i am not going to decide where the 2010 championships will be, nor do i know if i will be a part in it. However if i were i would want the following information:

1. Floor Plan: Even among the majority of table tennis players, i find that most people underestimate the amount of space required for a given number of courts.

I think it's important to see floor plans for the gymnasiums that will be used. The floor plan should include dimensions and distinguish between (a) usable playing surface, (cool.gif non-playable surface but usable for walkways or to add seating, © seating area not usable for walkway.

Dimensions are better than nothing, but they don't tell the whole story. For example at rochester this year, the gym was 220x300 ft, but the actual usable court space was more like 124x240 ft; the rest of the space was used for staff, spectators, etc. Different gyms have different shapes, lighting patterns, etc.

Note that while nctta specifies a minimum number of tables and court size (16 tables at 18x36 plus 8 practice tables), in my opinion this is the absolute bare minimum and rather tight, and also doesn't account for necessary walkways or coach/spectator areas. Being able to use larger courts (for example ITTF regulations specify 23x46) or more than 16 tables is not a requirement, but in my opinion would make things better

Once again, thank you for reviewing the bid submitted by Waukesha & Pewaukee, WI.

In response to the question regarding innovation and potential improvements, the Host Organizing Committee has several ideas for activities that would enhance the NCTTA Championships. Located in southeastern Wisconsin and a suburb of Milwaukee, Waukesha is in close proximity to many area attractions, including the Harley-Davidson Museum, Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Brewers Baseball and Miller Park. We’d be happy to coordinate day trips to these (or other) sites in an effort to add to the athletes’ overall experience.

Another idea is to offer “late-night” activities for one or more of the evenings, providing the athletes an opportunity to socialize, meet other competitors, and relax during non-competition time. Based on the desires of the attendees, the Host Organizing Committee will schedule a dance, concert, “glow” bowling, or other activity that may be of interest. If awarded the Championships, we would work with NCTTA officials and participants to offer activities that best fit their interests.

A third idea that will receive significant focus from the Host Organizing Committee is generating media exposure for the Championships, including television coverage. We have contacts with the local network affiliates as well as Time Warner Sports, a station received by cable subscribers that televises a variety of local events. There is opportunity for both taped-delayed and live coverage of the Championships by TWS. In addition to TV, we will reach out to print, radio, and interactive media partners as well.

Regarding the venue floor plan, a link to the competition space layout will be posted soon. Note the drawing is intended to provide a rough overview of the space, but some portions of the facility may not be to scale.

Center Court Sports Complex in Waukesha is the largest indoor sports venue in the area, featuring space for five regulation basketball courts, with natural hardwood athletic flooring. There is more than 40,000 square feet of free-span competition space. Dimensions are approximately 356 ft. x 117 ft. and the gymnasium features three curtain dividers to separate the space when necessary. Ceiling height is approximately 35 ft. There are four main entrance points to the gymnasium and four additional sets of doors for event loading and set-up purposes. Spectator seating is flexible by utilizing the mezzanine and portable bleachers. Free parking is available on both the North and South sides of the building. Please see our bid application for additional information or feel free to post further questions.

This venue was the site of the 2008 Badger Open table tennis tournament, which utilized 32 tables. According to the tournament manager, there was room for an additional 4-6 tables if they had been needed. Based on the dimensions of the facility and the previous success of a table tennis competition, the Host Organizing Committee is confident there will be adequate space for the NCTTA Championships.

Our forum isn't working properly to post PDF's so anyone who would like to see the PDF of the facility can email me and I can forward it.

It is also located on the NCTTA Hub for those on that.

Reply from Linda Leaf:

"The diagram of the Center Court playing venue is not to scale. The mezzanine portion in the diagram looks much larger (longer) than it really is, and the wide portion of the gym is probably three times longer than what it appears in the diagram. When we had our Badger Open with 32 tables at the site, all of the courts were large and along the walls on both sides of the gym. There was a huge center aisle the length of the gym which left plenty of room for spectators. There are portable bleachers available. The mezzanine is large enough for the control desk and officials/volunteers and the entire floor can be seen from it. Or, there is room for the control desk and/or officials on the floor directly in front of the mezzanine."
