The Soviet army fielded 31 tank, 41 tank, 44 tank and 51 tank battalions depending on which brigades they belong to. For simplicity's sake I have decided to only have battalions of 41 tanks.

Re-do
Have fleshed out the logistics units and added independent brigades. Added short explanations of why I have changed what I have changed (as compared to FM 100-60).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Brigade is a tactical unit of the Armed Forces of [NATION]. The Brigade functions either as part of a Division or as an independent Brigade operating under a larger Army or Front. For this the Brigade combines armour and motor rifle infantry and organic support units (i.e. direct and indirect fire support, combat service and support units, combat engineers, anti-aircraft systems, anti-tank systems etc.).

The Supreme High Command envisions Brigades to operate mainly as part of a nation-wide war effort. The Brigade will use its great mobility to outmanoeuvre enemy forces, its mine-laying units to deny the enemy his mobility, and its indirect fire support to achieve overwhelming firepower at a defined time and place in coordination with other units and branches, achieving pre-defined goals supportive of the over-arching divisional/army-level mission. Divisional Brigades are the main manoeuvre force of their superior Divisions and are echeloned within them; Independent Brigades function either as Army-level second echelon forces (striking at the operational depth of the enemy) or as autonomous forces in minor conflicts.

The Brigade will be expected to operate in various climates and terrain types, from the Great Steppes to temperate forests and the taiga. The Brigade is expected to cross major rivers with minimal preparation. The Brigade will operate in an NBC environment. The Brigade is not expected to operate in archipelagic regions or in tundra. The Brigade is not expected to carry out extensive or prolonged military operations in mountainous terrain without preparation, but may be ordered to undertake shorter missions until specialized units can be brought forth.

[East European Plain; Tanner Moor; Eurasian Steppe; Submediterranean forest; lots of major rivers; and so on and so forth]

The Brigade will thus most likely confront its enemies in open terrain and in forests, in coordination with other units or by itself, augmented with attached sub-units or relying on organic support.

Note that the brigades below represent an ideal; some brigades may be fielding with older equipment, or may be organized differently.

This is, again, more than heavily based on Soviet/Russian organization schemes. A few differences though: I have significantly more organic indirect fire support at the brigade level (the mortar battalions would not be present in Soviet brigades; I have 82mm at battalion level and 120mm at brigade, they have 82/120 at battalions; the intention is to use the mortars for tactical support, whereas artillery strikes at the depth for counter-battery, mining, long-range strikes and so on); I have twice as many mine warfare units (as I intend to do a fair amount of mining/de-mining as part of any defensive or offensive action); I have simplified the organization (my brigades don't change size depending on whether they are in a tank division or a motor rifle division for instance); I have a different ideal ratio of infantry:armour in my independent brigades (3:2 in MRBr, as opposed to 4:1 for RL Russian, to increase tactical versatility); and I have heavier artillery (152mm as opposed to 122mm; see above as regards to role). I also don't have any anti-tank guns, having replaced them with ATGMs (if anyone can explain what role the Soviet AT guns were supposed to play I would be very grateful). Overall, my brigades are heavier than Soviet/Russian as I intend to delegate more to the division/brigade level rather than the front/army level (biggest standing unit for instance, is the division, not the army).

The reason Brigade Air Defence Battalions are laid out as they are with three different systems, is to provide slightly different capabilities that complement each other. The SA-22 is the main medium-range system, with an engagement umbrella of 20x15 km. Short range air defence is provided by the SA-13 and SA-24 systems (5x3.5 km) and the autocannons on the SA-22 (and the SA-24s organic to Brigade sub-units). They thus create a continuous air defence umbrella, that is further enhanced by the use of different guidance methods (radar command guided for SA-22, passive IR/optical and passive IR for SA-13 and SA-24).

Again, with regards to materiel, these are ideal brigades. The AT-15 carriers for example are only present in a select few divisions/brigades due to cost. Most use 9P148 (AT-5 on BRDM-2) or 9P149 (AT-6 on MT-LB).

Even more than organization or equipment based critique, however, I would appreciate doctrine. The idea is a fast, mobile force that can easily cross the many rivers and waterways in [NATION], launching continuous actions to disrupt or decieve the enemy, bringing him off-balance, making him vulnerable to a. This would happen in the context of a larger divisional/army battleplan, concentrating the divisional/army assets (ground forces, air forces, riverine forces, naval forces etc) at achieving a specific goal. When I speak of concentration I mean not only in the tactical sense (the way the brigade's organic mortars are meant to be used, force/space-time density), but the totality of military action across the depth of the battlefield aimed at single goal.
Unfortunately, I know very little of actual doctrine and would very much appreciate pointers and criticism if there is anything in the organization that doesn't square with the terrain or the mission types I have described or if anything seems weird.

I have exchanged the 2B9 automatic gun-mortars for slower-firing 120mm mortars. I originally chose the 2B) because of their higher firing rate, but after consulting the chart Allanea posted, it seems as if a 120mm mortar would be more efficient even with it's lower firing rate for the kinds of missions I envision for them; i.e. suppressing entrenched and observable enemy positions.
I would also like to thank Allanea for his excellent translations. They are very much appreciated.

Have also updated tank companies and tank battalions.

Some infantry sections may be issued a PKM or a Pecheneg instead of the RPK in the second fireteam. The disposable RPG/RPO has no dedicated grenadier, but is usually carried as shown. In some units the SVD is replaced by the SVDK.

Sennacherib - January 16, 2012 10:54 PM (GMT)
In the continuing series of military reforms (and budget cuts) since the early 1990's, it was decided to streamline the armed forces hierarchy. So what I'm thinking of is instead of Military District - Army - Division - Brigade, it will read Military District - Operational Command - Brigade (I think there was posted a few days ago a pdf of Organizational Change in the Russian Airborne Forces: The Lessons of the Georgian Conflict by Rod Thornton; this is from that). The idea is to break up the divisions into independent brigades (see previous page; basically really light divisions/heavy brigades) and bring a few of those together with additional support and army air force units under an inter-service operational command.

The question then is what this operational command should consist of. I'm thinking
- 3 or 4 independent brigades
- rocket artillery battalion
- engineer battalion (in addition to the engineering resources organic to the brigades)
- combat air wing (rotary wing)
- transport air wing (rotary wing)
- materiel support (in addition to the materiel support organic to the brigades)
- maintenance (in addition to the maintenance organic to the brigades)
- reconnaissance and electronic warfare (in addition to the recce & ew organic to the brigades; this would add a signals recce company, a larger uav contingent and a jamming company)
- flamethrower company

Additional support (more tube and rocket artillery, SSMs, heavy SAMs, fixed wing aircraft, additional combat support, nuclear artillery, heavy duty troposcatter signals equipment, spetznaz etc) will be organized as brigade or battalion sized units directly subordinate to the military district.

thoughts?

Size of army? Number of operational commands?

Sennacherib - January 17, 2012 11:08 AM (GMT)
undecided as of yet; large for a 80 million country. these are ad hoc units, so it would vary. I'm only after a sort of standard, what would the average OpCom generally be outfitted with as a bare minimum.

Bloody_Sahara - March 22, 2012 06:12 AM (GMT)
The way you format this is really confusing - describing everything down to the lowest level only provides clutter but doesn't help describe the structure of the unit.

Sennacherib - March 22, 2012 12:10 PM (GMT)
how would you do it?

Bloody_Sahara - March 22, 2012 03:43 PM (GMT)
Either simply listing all the sub-units and then defining them later, or expanding it all to two levels like I did below.

http://z4.invisionfree.com/NSDraftroom/ind...topic=10756&hl=

Sennacherib - March 22, 2012 07:06 PM (GMT)
better?

Bloody_Sahara - March 22, 2012 11:16 PM (GMT)
Yes, Much.

- The brigade seems to have a lot of infantry and artillery, but a small amount of supporting units such as engineers and medical support comaparatively

- You're using a different AT gun at battalion and company level, perhaps they should be standardised? (2A19 rather than T-48)

- How are tanks handled?

Sennacherib - March 23, 2012 12:00 AM (GMT)
The brigades are small because, at this time, [NATION] was still using a division/army-centred organization. note that the modern brigades are much larger and operate as part of a brigade/operational command organization. So in 1955 the division was the main tactical unit, subordinate to the operational level army.

The company level weapons are light recoilless rifles. The 2A19 is a heavy brigade-level anti-tank gun, that may be, in front line corps, issued at battalion level. [Except I'm reading now on Jane's that it was first accepted into service in the 1960's, so I'll be replacing them].
EDIT: companies are now given either the 82mm SPG-82 or its replacement the B-10 of the same calibre. Battalions are one step up, the 107mm B-11 RR. D-48 85mm guns are now brigade-level assets, currently replacing the WWII era 100mm BS-3 guns.

In Motor Rifle Divisions, there is one tank brigade to three motor rifle brigades. Tank Divisions operate either on a 3:1 or a 2:2 basis.

Reconnaissance companies are identical to the reconaissance companies organic to brigades.
I had originally planned to have every divisions have an organic chemical mortar battalion, but I decided against it. All artillery battalions are now chemical-capable, usually with a battery each assigned for 'special ammunition duty' (mirroring the deployment of Krasnopol, I believe).

Some units may be outfitted with M1937 152mm gun-howitzers.
The Flamethrower Company is not the only unit in the Assault Pioneer Battalion; I will write out the others at some later time.
This seems to be treasure trove.
