Title: Royal Army

Bloody_Sahara - January 18, 2012 02:26 PM (GMT)
Using a regiment centric structure, the regiments are like BCTs.

Infantry units are really just combined arms. Tanks are to found at company level. Each tank company has three platoons, so it can easily be disseminated into it's battalion for combined arms. The cavalry battalion is enough for all armoured engagements, and the Inf battalions have enough to hold their own.

Medical, AA, Recon, and Engineer have been shoved into the HQ battalion.

Infantry regiment:

HQ battalion (425 men, 36 officers.)
    HQ company
    Engineer company
    AA company
    Medical company
    Light tank company
-
Infantry battalion (855 men, 38 officers, 12 tanks. )

    Gun battery

Total force: 3357 men, 188 officers, 84 tanks, 60 engineering vehicles, 24 guns, 66 APCs.

Logistics is controlled by a shadow regiment, that deploys with it and supplies it.

Could I have a second opinion on the Medical and AA companies? I really don't know how they should be composed.

HQ battalion:

HQ company (88 men, 10 officers, 7 APCs)
  • Battalion HQ - (6 men, 3 officers, 1 command APC)
  • Signals platoon - (22 men, 2 officers, 1 APC command vehicle, 1 signal truck)
  • Administrative platoon - (24 me, 2 officers, 2 APCs)
  • Air liason platoon - (12 men, 1 officer, 1 APC command vehicle)
  • Recon platoon - (24 men, 2 officers, 2 recon APCs)
Engineer company (193 men, 12 officers, 7 APCs)
  • HQ platoon - (20 men, 2 officers, 1 APC)
  • AVRE platoon - (50 men, 3 officers, 3 AVREs, 2 APCs)
  • AVRE platoon - (50 men, 3 officers, 3 AVREs, 2 APCs)
  • ABRE platoon - (43 men, 3 officers, 6 ABREs, 2 APCs)
  • Transport Materials platoon - (30 men, 1 officer, 5 trucks)
AA company (78 men, 8 officers, 4 SPAAGs, 8 SPSLs, 3 APCs, 8 trucks)
  • HQ platoon - (16 men, 3 officers, 2 APCs)
  • Air signals platoon - (16 men, 2 officers, 1 APC, 3 radar trucks)
  • SPSL platoon - (16 men, 4 SPSLs)
  • SPSL platoon - (16 men, 2 officers, 4 SPSLs)
  • SPAAG platoon - (16 men, 4 SPAAGs)
  • Ammunition platoon - (14 men, 1 officer, 5 trucks)
Medical company (80 men, 7 officers, 10 trucks, 4 APC ambulances)
  • HQ platoon - (12 men, 2 officers, 1 APC command vehicle)
  • Hospital platoon - (34 men, 2 officers, 4 trucks)
  • Hospital platoon - (34 men, 2 officers, 4 trucks)
  • Ambulance platoon - ( 6 men, 1 officer, 4 APC ambulances)
Total strength 425 men, 36 officers, 21 APCs.

Here AVRE = IMR analogue
ABRE = M9 bulldozer
SPSL = SAM launcher on T-54 chassis
SPAAG = SPAAG of T-54 chassis
APC = BTR-50

Sennacherib - January 19, 2012 03:35 PM (GMT)
I would have added some SAMs and MANPADs to that air defence contingent (then again, I have AA battalions to my brigades, not companies).

In the medical company I would have specialized platoons, rather than generic hospital platoons. Internal medicine, surgery and receiving/evacuation platoons; dental, resuscitation and pharmacy sections; and a morgue.

Bloody_Sahara - January 20, 2012 04:25 PM (GMT)
Note that the SPAAGs are actually mobile SAM launchers.

I don't know whether dentists and other such people should be put in to the medical detachment - there is not much room for them.

Infantry battalion

  • Anti-tank platoon (45 men, 2 officers, 3 APCs)
  • Mortar platoon (40 men, 2 officers, 3 APCs)
  • Recon platoon (46 men, 2 officers, 4 recon APCs)
-
Infantry company (189 men, 5 officers, 10 APCs)
  • HQ platoon (18 men, 2 officers, 1 command APC)
  • Rifle platoon (57 men, 1 officer, 3 APCs)
  • Rifle platoon (57 men, 1 officer, 3 APCs)

  • HQ platoon (18 men, 2 officers)
  • Fortification platoon (15 men, 1 officer, 4 ABREs, 2 trucks)
  • AVRE platoon (16 men, 2 officers, 4 AVREs)
  • Bridging platoon (30 men, 2 officers, 4 bridging vehicles, 4 treadway bridge)
  • Transport Materials platoon(12 men, 1 officer, 5 trucks)
-
Total force: 855 men, 38 officers, 12 tanks, 45 APCs.

The engineer company operates 4 bridging vehicles and 4 AVREs, which are a churchill AVRE analogue in this case

I have already stated how logistics is handled. Adding a recon element, then.

Sennacherib - January 28, 2012 05:46 PM (GMT)
What do you use your light tanks for if not recce? In fact, what's the reasoning behind ypur light tank and gun tank units?

Bloody_Sahara - January 31, 2012 04:18 AM (GMT)
@sennacherib: Light tanks are for recce. Gun tanks idk.

Gun tanks removed, Armoured Engineers changed, numbers added.

General structure of the army. Mostly inspired by Sumer, but taken up one level. I'd appreciate some input as to how the air forces should be structured.

Legions are administrative units which contain regiments. When a force is required, the regiments from one or more legions are assembled and sent off under a Royal Army Command.

For instance, if a force of three divisions were required, three commands would be created, for instance, RAC north, RAC middle, RAC south. Each would be allotted three regiments, for instance, RAC north would get the first lombardia regiment, second lombardia regiment, and the first rulsh regiment, as well as three supply regiments drawn from the same legions. RAC middle would get the first castiglian regiment, first petran regiment, and second rulsh regiment. RAC south would get a similar allotment of troops.

Next, the RACs get air support. These are air regiments drawn from the legions. Generally, one air unit corresponds to a ground regiment for easy coordination.

Finally there are the auxilliary battalions - these can be special forces units, tank destroyer battalions, medical battalions - whatever the existing regiments do not do sufficiently on their own.

For a total force I'm thinking of 20-30 regiments + a certain number of air forces (help!)

Imo you should look to the South Africans for a way to manage battalion battlegroups. They had a Ratel variant which could supply a platoon for a week of normal combat (or two weeks of low-intensity combat).

Considering an entire redo based on this tbh
