SAM-23 Swordsman strategic defence system

The SAM-23 Strategic defence system is a multi role air and missile defence system capable of intercepting a wide range of threats over extended ranges. The SAM-23 system is based around 3 different missiles. All 3 missile share a single primary airframe but each featuring different booster, terminal effect and guidance packages. All three missiles share identical launch containers and 4 missiles can be carried on a Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL) vehicle. Up to 4 TELs can be connected to a command unit consisting of 1 Missile control vehicle, 1 Radar vehicle and 3 support vehicles. The radar vehicle houses a large phased array X-Band radar capable of detecting small or stealthy atmospheric targets at long ranges and tracking multiple extra atmospheric contacts.

The first and most common missile is the SM-23A SAM, a long range strategic level surface to air missile capable of hitting small manoeuvring targets. The propulsion system uses a basic booster followed by the main sustainer motor. Steering and stabilisation is achieved using thrust vectoring with additional manoeuvrability provided by a “pif-paf” reaction rocket system allowing the missile to carry out sustained high G manoeuvres.

The next most common missile is the SAM-23B ABM designed to intercept and destroy ballistic missile of all kinds when they are still in their extra atmospheric stage. The ABM version uses the same sustainer motor as the SAM but supplements this with an enlarged booster and a third stage rocket that takes up most of the room set aside for the warhead and active radar components of the SAM version. Also the third stage detaches the kill vehicle and terminal guidance package boosting them into low earth orbit.

The final and most rare missile is the SAM-3C Anti Satellite (ASAT) missile which is more or less identical to the ABM version but with a lighter kill vehicle designed to enter into a collision orbit with the target satellite
