Seems the current Australian government is looking at a replacement for the Collins class. Already? Or is this just forward planning? -------------------- - The only clergyman on NSD Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed -Genesis 9:6 (KJV) A curse on him who is lax in doing the LORD's work! Sounds like forward thinking from what i've heard. Originally, it sounded like they would want an uprated Collins class (larger, faster, deeper diving) for the replacement. Looks like they are taking bids for any kind of SSK now, however. It would be interesting to see Australia with any of these four classes.
Type 214 Scorpene Dolphin Soryu S-80 Personally, I seem to like the Soryu best out of those. Now, if the full-on Type 212 was on the table, i'd go for that, but it seems that Australia would likely have to settle for the export Type 214. --------------------

Aus should get some SSNs. Given the proximity of India, China and America jostling for position, and the long pacific distances, it would make sense.

Maybe France would allow Australia to buy some upgraded Rubis class SSNs? Or maybe the French would allow Australia to buy/build some new Barracuda class SSNs

Maybe. Buying old subs is very problematic, though. Usually they are being replaced because the maintenance would cost almost as much as the new sub, for an outdated and less capable piece of equipment.
Ideally though the Aussies would get themselves some SSBNs... -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Luckily the religion of peace is usually the better armed." - Winston Churchill |

Why would that be ideal? Last time I checked, the Aussies have no interest in ICBMs. Also, converting them to SSNs would be a pain in the arse.

Don't buy old subs, look at Canada.
Would the Aussie gov. really spend on SSNs? -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Well the Aus armed forces seems to have two primary roles: 1. Stopping the crappy third world countries to its immediate north collapsing/invading one another/invading friendly countries. 2. Defending itself from the China-India-America nuclear future great power mess emerging in the south china sea. Well the first is achievable fairly cheaply. The second needs nuclear weapons. -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Luckily the religion of peace is usually the better armed." - Winston Churchill |

I very much doubt that Australia is interested in acquiring nuclear weapons anytime soon.

I think in the meidum term (50 years or so), they have to or they will become someone's vassal. Then again, anglosphere countries seem to prefer that these days.

While, personally, I think that SSNs or SSBNs would be a superb idea, acquisition of nuclear-military stuff (propulsion or weaponry) would be political suicide, so isn't going to happen.
It's going to be an SSK. I'd wager my firstborn on it. -------------------- - The only clergyman on NSD Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed -Genesis 9:6 (KJV) A curse on him who is lax in doing the LORD's work!
