How exactly do you have a duel role SAM/ATGM? I mean, Starstreak is pretty straight forward with the kinetic thing - but I don't really understand how a blast-frag is capable of killing a tank.

Did they wrap a splinter ring around a HEAT warhead or something? Also, has anyone talked about replacing the missile with like, BOLIDE or starstreak? I dunno if that came up during the Multi-Mission Vehicle thing...

Yeah basically its a HEAT warhead with a frag jacket much the same as a scaled up HEDP round.

In one of the books i had growing up (Bill gunstons modern combat helicopters IIRC) there was abig section on next generation multirole missiles. The author obviously thought the idea was pretty awesome as it allowed your AT helo to defend itself and hunt other aircraft (the book was really into helicopter air to air) but he really didn;t like the ADATS solution and IIRC was proposing some sort of multimode EFP/EFF warhead. Starstreak didn;t get a netion as it wasn't commonly known about when the book was published (it featured the EH101 as a vaguely detailed future helicopter).

Oh, somewhere I seem to remember that broad-angled aluminium coned HEAT was optimized for punching holes deep into airplanes and setting them on fire at the same time at signifigantly less cost than a DU cone.

Also, based on where you initiate warhead detonation, the cone can become a directional frag instead.

That is actually pretty cool.

Are the missiles actually still in production? I watched some CF footage of a live fire training session and it seems we don't actually fire off live rounds that often.

sad izi is sad at the lack of north american air defense sad.gif

History of shaped charge includes very interesting info on aluminum shaped charges for anti-aircraft missiles, including photos and drawings of both designs and firing tests. Apparently one was intended for the BOMARC missile...

Also, a meme anti-tank rocket is borned:
QUOTE

The pilots complained that the 5.0-inch aircraft HVAR rockets were "bouncing" off of the Soviet-built
T-34 tanks. (The HVAR used a 50-1b, blast-fragmentation warhead, which was essentially
a modified 5-inch Naval gun projectile). To make the matter even worse, it was reported
that the formidable Joseph Stalin III heavy tanks had been seen on the Trans-Siberian
Railway, apparently enroute to Korea.

An urgent wire from the Chief of Naval Operations to the Naval Ordnance Test Station to
"do something about the problem" resulted in the virtually unheard of feat of development
"from scratch" of a totally new warhead and fuze system and delivery of the first 1000
rounds to Korea in less than 20 days!
