I know that lots of people here say that sufficiently sized HE shells are highly effective against tanks, but how exactly? What is the intended effect that a large-calibre HE round does to a tank?

Wiki wasn't especially helpful. Just mentioned 'dynamic shockwaves' and such.
I doubt the ability of HE, even lots of it, to physically blast its way through armour (front glacis/turret face), but obviously it will cause severe damage to exterior components. I recall seeing either here or in the tank thread something about the shockwave of large enough HE warheads being sufficient to kill the crew of an MCA-7, despite probably not penetrating - with regards to its heavy armour. -------------------- One day, I will actually know what the fuck I'm talking about. Well, if you model the explosive of an M795 155mm shell as TNT and assume it all explodes and does so forwards, it throws 45MJ at whatever it's targeting. Less beneficial assumptions, you're probably looking at 30MJ.

Even if you aren't :Allanea: you can still see these pictures of the effect of HE shells on tanks. Basically two mechanisms of damage: 1. Fragments/overpressure destroy external components (Sights, the gun, the tracks etc.) This is the biggest threat. 2. Injure or kill the crew either by spallation (spall shields mostly take care of this) or the shock wave. This is a fairly unreliable mechanism. It's also possible to cause catastrophic damage with a sufficiently large explosion. --------------------

Russians use 152 and 203mm pieces, not sure if 122s still see service.
