i've recently discovered that i've neglected to include a corvette type ship in my fleet and decided that i'd like a little imagination for it (rather than just nicking all my ships from the RN and RAN.)

so:

a theoretically speed of at least 35 knots would be preferred. what the actual speed would be, i don't know.
capability for both anti-air and anti-surface combat.
space for up to 4 aircraft.
the latest in sonar/radar (obviously)
crew compliment of up to 225.
space for several short range anti-ship/boarding speedboat-type ships.

I'm not sure if your requirements are realistic. AAW nowadays requires lots of electronics and heavy radar equipment. And, not to forget, missiles, and educated crew capable of handling high-tech equipment. Zeven Provincien class is a good example of what AAW ships absolutely need.

4 aircraft (I suppose helicopters) is possible, but maybe a bit too much for a ship which does not has helicopter carrying as it's main function. Your corvette carries just as many helicopters as the Jeanne Of Arc class, which is a dedicated helicopter cruiser.

And if you got all that, you still need something to attack surface targets with. Which will further increase the size of the ship.

Still, all of these requirements are not impossible. They're just a bit excessive for a corvette. You could mount all these on a ship the size of a cruiser\destroyer, but then it won't reach the 35 knots, and will be much more difficult to maneuver. So you still need a smaller ship to pull of the jobs corvettes usally do, like supporting amphibious assualts, patrolling undeep waters, and protecting a larger ship against strikecraft.

Cold war. The Russians had Kirov class nuclear powered cruisers, so Americans needed something to counter that and show they're still in the arms race.

15 Supercarriers needs a lot of protection. Add in many Supply Convoys. That and Bombers were one of the two prime Soviet Ways of interdicting Supply Shipments. That and 4 Battleships.

Heck, at one in the early 90s we actually had about FIFTY Cruisers in Commission. Long Beach, the Leahy's, Bainbridge, the Belknaps, Truxtun, the California's, the Virginias, and finally, the Ticos. Thats 54 Cruisers in commission in the 93-96 time period.

We had a different classification system for the longest time.

So things are kinda funky.

Under the post 75 Designations however, we had 54 Cruisers in Commission during the 93-96 period. Which covers the retirement of the oldest ships and the commissioning of Port Royal.
