If you scroll rightwards, you'll eventually get to a close-up picture of an Egyptian guard toting a rifle with a riot helmet with the caption 'Armed troops are now guarding the Egyptian National Museum...'

Isn't that a SIG 552? Since when have the Egyptians had SIG 552s?

Sig 552 is from the mid-late 1990s. You're thinking Sig 542.

And yes, it's a 550 series.Dunno when they got them.

It isn't the army so I'd imagine the police force can buy and use whatever rifle they want.

There's nothing on the internet about the acquisition of SIGs by the Egyptians.

Since when could they afford them?

Ever since they could afford a thousand M1's.

With US military aid. But if the Egyptians were buying rifles, I'm sure the US would put pressure on them to acquire US weapons.

Most of the Egyptian armed forces is payed for by the United States (I would imagine, although I make no guarantee, as part of concessions for maintaining peace with Israel).

even if the budget of the egyptian gov was $0, they get 1.3 billion usd per year courtesy of uncle sam so ...

And ever since the war on terror, subsidies for military go to police and intelligence services.
