Thanks for the tips McSofty.

I could have used them TWO WEEKS AGO.

In my defence, this particular tent was not equipped with a rain fly. And I have since been told that a pole to hold up the middle of the tarp at the front might have been of some use too.

As Alanis Morisette says - you live, you learn.

Oh and speaking of lady singers, McSofty, I just finished reading an article on Afterellen.com about out SA singer, Melanie Lowe. You ever heard tell of her?

Hmmmmmmm, Melanie Lowe, hmmmm... if I'm not mistaken she was a participant on our Idols show - don't think she won though. If I remember correctly, when the show was on, she had short, spiky white hair - not al all what she looks like now. I have no idea what her music sounds like (not a big fan of the whole Idols thing), but I suppose it can't be too shabby if she goes on tour with the likes of Katie Melua (or does that make it bad?). Speaking of which, has KM be outed yet?

Anyone ever been to Thailand? We're going in Dec for 3 weeks. At this point in time all we have is our plane tickets and little else. We're not planning to pre-book anything (except maybe the first night in Bangkok) - but apart from that we're just going to play it by ear and go with the flow. Also, shoe string budget. So, if you've ever been and you can suggest a couple of must-see's or must-do's, please let me know!

Oh, and while you're at it: Things to do in an airport on a 9 hour stop over when you're not allowed to leave through gate number exit!

Hi McSofty: I just spoke to someone who has been to Thailand a couple of times. He says it is a generally inexpensive place.

Beaches to the south. Mountains to the north. Phuket (sic) he says is more expensive. Somewhere called Crabby (sic) is cheaper. Hopefully, he will e-mail me with more info.

Buses are cheaper than trains. Most stores act as tourist info. places and can arrange all kinds of stuff. Apparently most bigger cities have multiple bus stations, depending on which direction you plan to go. i.e. if you are planning to travel north, the bus station is usually at the north end of the city.

And, he said you need a minimum of three weeks - which you have already booked.

As for amusing yourself for 9 hours at an airport, I Spy is always a good time waster. Charades with all your fellow travellers? If you're able to carry duty free booze and open that up, that opens up even more possibilities!

Double posting after two months? This place sure is quiet!!!

I got tired doing my Pathology homework and needed a distraction, so here I am (all alone, it seems). I'm actually stuck on a question my textbook doesn't answer and the internets don't seem to either.

What is this question, you ask? Well, since you insist, here it is:

e. Which lymphocyte has a role in both cell-mediated and humoral immunity?

I DON'T KNOW eek.gif

Do any of the geniuses (genii?) I know you all are have the answer?

Other than this annoying unanswerable question, I have survived the first half of the first semester in my two-year course. So far, I'm happy (and surprised!) to report that my 52-year-old brain seems to be capable of retaining information and regurgitating it.

Who knew studying was so stimulating???

What have all the rest of you hooligans been up to?

Are your plans still in place to go to Thailand in Dec. McSofty?

ss - How are things in sunny SoCal?

Does Cassandra still exist, or was she a figment of our imagination?

All of these are important questions.

Oh, and happy belated birthday to Buttons.

SURE YOU KNOW.
There are only 2 types of lymphocytes... T and B.
You have a 50/50 chance of getting it right.
I say T cell.

Still sunny here in So Cal. smile.gif

hi ss - nice to hear from you!!

as for T cells v B cells - there's a rub. from what i've read, T-cells are the ones that perform cell mediation and B-cells are the ones that provide humoral immunity (though there ain't nothing "humorous" about it - ba doom chick).

i think they're looking for one type of cell that does BOTH and I can't find an answer to that anywhere. at least, that's the way i'm reading the question, but maybe i'm wrong. oh, the challenges of the English language!

and isn't it always sunny in SoCal? - what's the line from that song "It never rains in California...."

as for Toronto, we had some beautiful fall colours about a week ago, but the leaves have mostly fallen off the trees now. no snow yet, though!

Are we still on the question? I seem to recall that there is a third cell, but I can't remember the name of the thing. I'll ask the doctor when she comes home.

The Thailand plans are still going full steam ahead! I've booked us 4 rooms for 8 persons in a 3-star hotel for the first 2 nights in Bangkok, including breakfast, all for the might price of R 1600 (or $200). That's the total price for everyone. Let's recap: 8 persons, 4 rooms, 2 nights, 3-star hotel, breakfasts = R1600 or $200. Or you can work it the other way around, which comes to about 6500 Baht. I still can't believe it. This is what I call dirt cheap.

A friend told me the other day that there are 3 types of busses in Thailand:
$10 bus with no aircon
$20 bus with aircon
$30 bus with working aircon
He says to make sure that we get on a bus with a working aircon, because having an aircon is not to say that it's working.

Hope you're all well (you're not, but I don't mean it like that).

Your travel plans sound pretty good McSofty. Given the deal you got on the hotel, I agree you should splurge on an air conditioned, air conditioned bus.

btw - just saw on the news there was a pretty decent meteor show above Johannesburg last week. Did you see it? If so, did you realize what it was, or did you just put it down to overindulgence in mind altering substances?

As for the lymphocite quandary, since I had the option between two questions to answer, I decided to answer the alternate question. There's more than one way to skin a cat.

Can't believe it's almost December 1st - good old summertime in the southern hemisphere. I won't say what it means for us in the northern hemisphere, since I might cry.
