It had been six years since the funeral, but she still visits him every June 20, buying flowers for his grave, cleaning it up a bit, and told him things that had happened that year. . . . . Things he missed. . . . .
Driving to the site, she thought about how she was the first one to show up at the hospital, how she, just a 17 year- old girl, had to identify the body of her beloved brother. She stayed by her brothers corpse, until way into the night. The policemen with her had all asked her if she wanted a ride home, but her reply every time was, "Home will never be the same without Sano."
Her parents didn't show until one in the morning, seeing their daughter with an empty glance at them, but they couldn't care less about her.
Sano was the perfect son, he did everything their parents wanted, but she wasn't jealous. Instead, she felt sorry for him, not doing what he wanted, never getting a chance to be himself. . . except around her. She didn't expect him to do anything, but have fun with what he did. He confided in her with secrets that she will never tell even after the day she dies. . . She wasn't perfect like him but or as important as Sano, but all the pressure he had had been too much and he sometimes broke down, crying . . .
When her parents told her it was time to go, that she had to go to school the next day, she replied, with icicles on every word, "I'd rather stay with my brother, thank you very much." And so, not caring a bit about her, her parents left her there alone with the cadaver. . . . . . .
By the time she had arrived at the grave, it was already cleaned with lilies on the grave. . . . . . They are probably from Mother and Father, she thought as she picked up the lilies. She looked around the site and threw them away in a wastebasket nearby. She knew Sano hated lilies; he always said that death should be celebrated for the souls that had gotten the peace they deserve. She hadn't brought him lilies, but forget-me-nots, placing them where the lilies once were, and saying to her brother that she could never forget him. Then she felt at peace again, able to speak to Sanosuke Niruida once more. She wept tears of sadness as the sun began to set. . . . . . . . |
