THE search for Bigfoot is over, according to two US hunters who say they have found the body of the hairy ape-like creature and will back their claims up at a news conference today.

Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer say they discovered the body in a forest in northern Georgia about two weeks ago.

The pair, who reportedly operate a Bigfoot tracking business, will present "DNA evidence and photo evidence of the creature" at the news conference in California today.

Photographs already released show a large ape-like animal crammed into a freezer, where it was being preserved.

Tom Biscardi, a Bigfoot hunter who has been searching for legendary creature since 1971, had no doubt the find was authentic. "It's a huge situation for me after 35 years, because I've wanted to bring one back," he said. "They showed me the body. They took me to the area where they found it - it took a day and a half to get there."

The body is reportedly male, more than two metres tall, weighs more than 230 kilograms, has reddish hair, blackish-grey eyes and human-like teeth.

Mr Biscardi said a video shot by the two men the day they found the body showed at least "three others walking upright like a man".

He and his organisation, Searching for Bigfoot, are now working with the two men to capture a Bigfoot alive.

As news of the discovery spread across the internet, many claimed it was all a hoax.

"We trekked in for a day a half … what kind of lunatic would be out here in a monkey suit? I saw the thing, I touched it," Mr Biscardi said.

"They're fine guys, one works for the police department in Georgia, and the other was a correctional officer. They're pretty credible guys."

Results from tests on genetic material from alleged remains of one of the mythical half-ape and half-human creatures, made public at a news conference on Friday held after the claimed discovery swept the internet, failed to prove its existence.

Its spread was fueled by a photograph of a hairy heap, bearing a close resemblance to a shaggy full-body gorilla costume, stuffed into a container resembling a refrigerator.

One of the two samples of DNA said to prove the existence of the Bigfoot came from a human and the other was 96 per cent from an opossum, according to Curt Nelson, a scientist at the University of Minnesota who performed the DNA analysis.

Bigfoot creatures are said to live in the forests of the US Pacific Northwest. An opossum is a marsupial about the size of a house cat.

Results of the DNA tests were revealed in an email from Nelson and distributed at the Palo Alto, California, news conference held by Tom Biscardi, host of a weekly online radio show about the Bigfoot.

Also present were Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, the two who say they discovered the Bigfoot corpse while hiking in the woods of northern Georgia. They also are co-owners of a company that offers Bigfoot merchandise.

Despite the dubious photo and the commercial interests of the alleged discoverers, the Bigfoot claim drew interest from Australia to Europe and even The New York Times.

Biscardi said the DNA samples may not have been taken correctly and may have been contaminated, and that he would proceed with an autopsy of the alleged Bigfoot remains, currently in a freezer at an undisclosed location.

I think it was just a human DNA sample, as opposed to human remains.

BIGFOOT has been found in the woods and is being held in a cooler at an undisclosed location.

So say two self-proclaimed Bigfoot trackers, Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, who held a news conference to publicise their claim of having found the elusive Sasquatch, or at least the body of one, in the northern part of the US state of Georgia.

The exact location was being kept secret, they said, to protect other Bigfoots still wandering there.

The public was excluded from the conference, but a picture of the supposed 225-kilogram-plus dead biped was posted online at www.searchingforbigfoot.com, looking like a mangy mound of fur, entrails and the pinched face of a close cousin to Chewbacca from Star Wars — all crammed into a water-filled icebox.

A second photo showed the proud captors, and Tom Biscardi, a fellow Bigfoot hunter and owner of the website, posing next to the wet heap of fuzz.

Some Bigfoot enthusiasts were less than convinced.

"It looks like a costume, a waterlogged costume that's been stuffed into a freezer," said Jeff Meldrum, an associate professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University and one of the few academics conducting Bigfoot field work. "It just doesn't have the hallmark of a real corpse."

The website said the male, flat-footed man-ape, christened Rickmat in honour of its finders, measures 2.3 metres tall, has reddish hair, blackish-grey eyes and human-like teeth.

Claims of finding Bigfoot have been legion; zealous pursuers have girdled the globe in search of the legendary creature. But interest piqued again several weeks ago when Mr Whitton and Mr Dyer went on an internet-based radio show, Sasquatch Detective, to make their announcement.

The two later chose Mr Biscardi, who says he has been searching for the creature since 1971, to verify their find.

But Dr Meldrum said the choice of Mr Biscardi did little to bolster their credibility. Mr Biscardi once claimed he found a severed hand from a likely Bigfoot, said Dr Meldrum, who studied the artefact himself and concluded it was an old bear paw. "He has a history of lack of reputability," Dr Meldrum said.

Mr Whitton and Mr Dyer said a team of scientists was purportedly being sent to Georgia in the next few months to pursue the matter. Meanwhile, Mr Biscardi and his team are making plans to capture a second creature alive, the website said.

Mr Whitton is a Georgia police officer on administrative leave after being wounded on duty. Mr Dyer is a former prison officer. The two co-own www.bigfootracker.com and Bigfoot Global LLC, which offers Bigfoot expeditions.

At the news conference, the trio of trackers handed out what they said was DNA evidence from an expert, who found three matches: indeterminate, humans — and a possum.

Asked how much the men hoped to make from the discovery, Mr Biscardi said, "As much as possible."
