London–the city of dashed hopes and lost dreams. Never sleeping for fear of not waking up. Lurking in the shadows of eighteenth century England, London is the biggest city under the reign of his majesty–and the worst.

welcome to pfop, a lit+ roleplaying site caught up in 1700s london. we are currently accepting canons and originals.

August, 1728.
With summer coming to an end things are cooling down. It’s cloudy, with a chance of showers.

Everyone loves a bit of drama, which is just what you get in the main plot and character subplots.

KENSINGTON PALACE ,

Home to His Majesty King George II and the royal family, the palace’s splendid furnishings and magnificent gardens can hardly go unnoticed by the rest of the society. Unfortunately you’ll need to be of noble blood or an exceptionally talented briber to get past the guards.

ROYAL OPERA HOUSE ,

A magnificent palace of a building, and rightly so. If you have the money, you can listen to the beautiful pieces of artists from around the world. The opera house also serves as a theatre, where you can watch performances and ballets.

ST JAMES’S PARK ,

The oldest of London’s parks; the fifty-eight acres of St James’s is filled with beautiful gardens of flowers, mazes, lakes, architecture and wildlife. It’s a fine place for any family taking a picnic or a romantic walk with a lover hand-in-hand.

CHURCH ,

It is required of civilised society to go to church every Sunday, with the church bells ringing out gloriously. A compulsory service is held in the morning, but the doors are always open to religious folk wishing to go and pray or visit deceased loved ones. Vicious grave-robbers are common at night, so keep your distance after sunset.

THE THAMES ,

The Thames–the river of London. It stretches for miles across the whole city, and while thoroughly enjoyable in Winter when it’s frozen over and suitable for ice-skating, it flows solemnly towards sea with contents one doesn’t wish to think about.

TOWER OF LONDON ,

While the dreaded Tower serves a positive purpose as a fortress, it is mainly used as a torture chamber and prison, the latter of which is prior to (usually private) execution. However, the Tower is reserved for those of high status only, and is also used as an armoury.

HOSPITAL ,

Hospitals are quiet; the rich of society prefer to call out doctors to their homes, and the poor can’t afford medicine. Patients are mostly made up of those in dire need of medical attention, such as amputations or serious injuries. While some of the herbs and spices used can be questioned of effectiveness, the doctors try their hardest, so long as you can pay them.

SCHOOL ,

If you can afford education, you can send your children to a public school, although private tuition is preferred among richer families who want to avoid ‘riffraff’. The professors are strict and punishment is often involved for any disobedient student, but learning to read, write and use arithmetic is crucial for those who don’t want to end up in the gutter. Classes are divided by gender; the boys tend to learn mechanics and sport, while the girls are taught poetry and sewing.

THE STREETS ,

Whether you’re trundling over a cobbled bridge in a horse-drawn carriage or trying to find a few scraps of food in a dingy alleyway, London is almost entirely made up of roads. They can get you anywhere and everywhere, but the King’s Highway is busiest with traffic and market stalls.

HOUSES ,

Be it manors or shacks, there’s no place like home–even if it’s infested with rats. While the upper class lounge in their mansions, the dregs of society may even find accommodation in an abandoned crate. Either way, all the addresses will be found here.

COACHING INN ,

There’s nothing like a pint or ten of grog to chase away the worries of reality, or convince a pretty barmaid to settle on your lap for the evening. The coaching inn is always a busy place, not too far from the harbour, and thus always welcome to a sailor with time on his hands–or nerve in morals, or a weary traveller seeking acommendation.

HARBOUR ,

Screeching seagulls and the smell of salty air can either turn your stomach or ignite a sailor’s soul. The port is a busy place; merchant ships breeze in and out of the docks be it rain or shine, and the royal guards stand duty at all times, on alert for the danger of pirate ships on the horizon.

LUNATIC ASYLUM ,

It’s very difficult to find a place worse than prison, but the asylum comes exceptionally close. While there are genuinely ‘patients’ with mental disabilities locked inside, many of the practically prisoners merely expressed the ‘wrong’ opinions or thoughts, and were deemed unstable. It is an awful place to have to live, and the doctors often take advantage of the inmates.

BRIGGS ORPHANAGE ,

Managed by the same family for generations, most recently emplaced mistress Ms Briggs owns the grim, looming building at the end of town somewhat reluctantly. The orphans are not well-treated, as much as the society thinks they are, and if you are gullible enough to donate a fund, no doubt it will go to Ms Brigg’s own ‘needs’.

NEWGATE PRISON ,

If you’re not noble enough for the Tower and are awaiting trial, punishment or both, a criminal will always be sent here. The law doesn’t like to waste space, and the majority of criminals are often executed even if they claim innocence. Trials are a fickle matter in this day and age, and prison availability is scarce.

ABANDONED WAREHOUSE ,

Once used as a factory, the abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city is a grim place to find oneself, and preferably avoided. Criminals often gather here to divide and trade stolen goods, from purses to body parts, even if they’re still attached to a living body.

COURTYARD ,

A place of entertainment, gypsies thrive within the courtyard’s walls by a way of making money; dancing, fortune-telling and bear-baiting are common. The gallows are particularly popular and used regularly for executing common folk.

SEWERS ,

Perhaps the most unpleasant part of London, but those who insist on tipping the contents of their chamber pots from their bedroom windows have to expect it to go somewhere, and the sewers can often be home to the odd urchin in desperate need of shelter. Occasionally the sewers overflow, in which case; hitch up your skirts and start wading.

WOODLANDS ,

While a considerable distance from any city, London is the closest. Roaming with wild animals as well as wild outlaws, the forests are a dangerous place to be for anyone unaccustomed to their mazes of towering trees.
