London–the city of dashed hopes and lost dreams. Never sleeping for fear of not waking up. Lurking in the shadows of eighteenth century England, London is the biggest city under the reign of his majesty–and the worst.

August, 1728.
With summer coming to an end things are cooling down. It’s cloudy, with a chance of showers.

and please, believe me
when i say i love you

‘May I have this dance, Mademoiselle Newbury?’ The man drawled in a voice
smothered with charm. He took the girl’s hand in his own, and kissed it with a
flourish.

It started with that kiss. The kiss that led to many nights Miseur Dumont and
Alexandra Newbury spent together in each others arms, but as nothing more than
friends with benefits. It was never anything serious, and they gradually went their
separate ways. Alexandra left France to go to England. A betrothal was in store,
Dumont had heard, and he returned to his crew, sailing away from France with high
adventures planned for his own future.

The years went by, and the Montagues were a fine couple. Only recently has their
relationship taken an unpleasant turn with Oliver’s obsession for revenge worsening.
So desperate was Alexandra for his attention that she claimed she was pregnant, and
had been for some time. Oliver was so overjoyed at the thought of an heir that he
dismissed the thought of avenging his brother almost at once. Alexandra knew full
well she wasn’t pregnant, but she couldn’t bear to break her husband’s heart. The
couple had never been successful in conceiving before, and it certainly hadn’t
happened this time. Besides, since claiming the pregnancy Oliver had returned to his
usual devoting ways, and Alexandra enjoyed the attention.

How the following events happened, one could not be sure. By pure coincidence
Dumont and Alexandra stumbled across one another one day. It was a joyous reunion
for the two friends, but neither of them had anything more in mind. Alexandra
suggested Dumont–who’s crew had been granted permission to spend a few hours on
land–come back to the Montague house for dinner. She planned to introduce him to
Oliver, but he was not in the house. On any other occasion Alexandra would have
been pleased that her husband was finally getting out of the house and getting his life
back on track. Nevertheless the guilt of lying ate away at her conscience.

The two kept in contact, despite the difficulty of doing so. Dumont would often write
from wherever he happened to be and hope it found its way back to Alexandra, who
could only read his words and hope he knew she cared about him. The weeks went by,
and Oliver was starting to get suspicious. Alexandra was showing no signs of
pregnancy, and gradually Oliver started to lose hope and returned to his brooding. As
if it were meant to be, Dumont sent another letter, telling Alexandra that the crew
would soon be in London again, and he hoped he could see her.

One thing led to another; the old flame was reignited. On an act of impulse Alexandra
took things further than an ordinary friendship should go. If she could just win back
her husband, she would be happy, and if she couldn’t conceive with him then she
could try elsewhere. She didn’t love Dumont, and Dumont was too much of a ladies
man to really love Alexandra. He left the Montague residence that day thoroughly
satisfied with himself, while Alexandra was left to panic over what she had just
done.

Now the signs are beginning to show–Alexandra is most definitely pregnant and
Oliver’s faith has been restored. Rather uneducated in such matters, he believes
Alexandra was just a ‘late shower’. Alexandra is able to keep up the charade of doting
wife and expectant mother, but what happens when the bastard child is born?
