Title: Old School Draft

RadioStar - November 28, 2010 10:18 PM (GMT)
Hey guys,

I'm interested in doing a blast from the past draft. Mostly, Ravinca block. If anyone is interested, please reply with what set you'd like to bring back. Then we can vote and get the most popular ones for this weekend.

I support this 100%.

I'd be down for something like this. Ravnica, time spiral, I don't really care. Just something to break the monotony of drafting triple Scars.

Oh man, TPF draft. Mason's absolutely right (and how often have I said that?) about that format... there hasn't been a better limited format that I've played. So fun.

If this is happening between Dec. 25 and Jan. 9 it's likely I can make the drive up to participate, although I trust that most people are home during this time and so that won't be the case.

Jank draft:

Fallen Empires + Homelands + Prophecy + Saviors of Kamigawa

4 packs since the first two are < 15 cards, and you need more cards to try to make something out of it.

I would love to draft an old block if we could coordinate a weekend that I could make it up there. Time Spiral is one of my favorites. Homelands would be fun to draft but not worth it unless the packs are really cheap. Ravnica Block would be great too. It would be interesting to try drafting the blocks backwards according to the new draft rules. Odyssey or Invasion Block would be cool since I've never done them, but probably too expensive and/or hard to find boxes of.

poggydude - November 30, 2010 12:44 AM (GMT)
yeah...how do you guys value momentary blink now that he no longer save combat?

question like that will totally pop up and that'll be cool.

TykiMikk - November 30, 2010 12:57 AM (GMT)
I found Odyssey boxes for 90$ a box on ebay. I also found Homelands boxes for 70$.

The cheapest Future Sight box on ebay was 130$, no doubt thanks to Goyf.

So are we doing this or what? I doubt anyone will mind paying a few bucks more if we go with Rav.

Pro Tip: If you do Ravnica block, make sure that everyone at the very minimum knows what Guilds are in what sets and the inherent perils caused by going Selesnya pack 1.

The last time we did this, I seem to remember a lot of frustration of players who did not play Ravnica block the first time mostly caused by not knowing these things.

Additionally, if you didn't play Rav the first time around, know that Karoos are AWESOME. I cannot overstate how good they are. Pick up as many as is feasible...wait, no more than that.

Also, Master Warcraft is an utter blowout. >_>

Pick up the karoos as if they said Enters the battlefield tapped, and when it enters, DRAW A CARD. IT'S A LAND.
Ravnica is an EXTREMELY slow format. You can get away with not playing a spell until turn five, and crush the game. When you get to play 12 lands and not sacrifice your curve at all, you'll realize how powerful they are.

I had two favorite strategies, but there are about 7 or 8 solid color combinations.

Most of them rely on picking a color triangle where each set has one leg of the triangle. The triads which follow this are:

WUB
WUR
WBR
UBR
BRG
Notice that none of these include GW, meaning selesnya is really only an option if you are going five color. I only take Selesnya Guildmage and Glare of Subdual in the first pack, and even then I look to splash.

RUG - Wait, this doesn't follow the pattern! Let me explain: Assume everyone is playing according to the previous five triads being the way to go. Green is wanted by only one of those triads, so you can pick up quality green cards pretty easily. Additionally, there are a higher proportion of non-guild cards in the first pack, meaning you can pick up solid mono-color cards for a while. In the second pack it gets good, as you are looking at picking up 2 of the 3 guilds, one that's only wanted by two triads, and another that's only wanted by 1! that means you can get cards like tin street hooligan and gruul scrapper extremely late. In the last pack it gets the best, since no one else wants Simic (UG) guild cards! You can get 3/3 flying tramplers for 4 as late as 5th pick (it's happened) and graft kicks but with token generation that you can steal in the first pack. Vigean Hydropon into Scatter the seeds is 3 2/2s on turn four (I've done it turn three off of dark elves), that, or dropping a graft critter and a gruul scrapper post combat after attacking with a graft critter can get you a 5/5 trampler, which trumps a lot of stuff.

The last archetype I can think of is 5 color good stuff. I know shards was good for that, but man this format was BUILT for it. You get not just ten common and five uncommon fixers, but 20 common ones, each of which accelerates or provides card advantage. Speaking of card advantage, the format is packed with it, with cantrips, two for one removal, karoos, and some efficient card draw and tempo effects, you can keep your opponent on the back foot forever. I've won drafts with Gruul Nodorog, 2 Izzet Chronarchs, and a Moroii as my only creatures. That's 4 things with power. I won another with Sisters of Stone Death and Grave Shell Scarab as my only creatures. That's 2! Creatures are largely secondary to the game if you've got removal, especially if your creatures have dredge.

Pro tip: "Aggro" in this format is turn three flyer into turn four flyer. Plan accordingly.

Onslaught! Either OOO or OLS would be good
