The reasons:

tl;dr
- Grinding no longer a good option for Q'ing for PTs.
- 16 person "player's championship" remains.
- 4 person team "world cup" to occur at Gencon annually.
- Pro points stay the same, minor changes to pro player club.

Rewarding play skill over play quantity and an effort to support smaller international markets. These changes seem to be almost 100% positive to me. It's really good to see this, both because it shows they are willing to listen (even if it takes the entire community calling for it) and they are willing to admit mistakes (rather than them say to wait a whole year before they change anything).
