There are some really good websites for writers out there. Here's one of my favourites:

http://www.creativity-portal.com/

It's got prompts, tips, articles about how the psychology of a creative person works etc. It's a fun read, although the helpfulness might vary from person to person.

Story Spinner

It gives you a bit of a boost when you have no ideas. You get a setting, a starting phrase and four words which you must include. A great exercise to get those creative muscles working.

Seeing as this seemed a better place for these kind of topics, I moved them to this new forum.

Three for the Kings of the elves high in light
Nine to the mortal which cry
Seven rings to the gnomes in their halls made of stone
One ring for the dark lord's hand sitting on his throne
in the land so dark where I've to go
Slow down and I sail on the river
Slow down and I walk to the hill
Lord of the Rings

Off at a slight tangent, a bit of legendary history for you. In 1974, Star Trek fanwriter Paula Smith was getting so fed up with superpowered nymphets swarming over the Enterprise that she decided to write a parody of the genre. Meet fifteen-year old Lieutenant Mary Sue as she boldly goes where no fangirl has gone before - say hello to Sue on her very first appearance!

A Trekkie's Tale

Merlin: Thank you.
Arthur: For what? For lying to my father to save your worthless hide? If you ever put me in that situation again, Merlin, I will clap you irons myself.

John: Sorry.

Original flavour Trek. And her romantic aspirations? Ah, that would be telling ... biggrin.gif

A site you might like - The Fanfic Symposium. A huge collection of essays on all aspects of fanfiction, with the field guide to Mary Sues and the crossover discussions particularly good.

Also, it may not be fanfiction but The Eye of Argon by Jim Theis is definitely worth a look. A legendary badfic in the Conan style - follow Grignr the barbarian and his incoherent quest, and marvel at the staggering awfulness of the writing! Was voted Worst Ever Story fifteen years in a row at one sci-fi convention, despite only being officially nominated the first year.

A Letter From The Force

One Star Wars fan gets sick of badfics and Mary-Sues's so write 'A Letter From The Force' telling writers what is acceptable and what isn't. All the advice is perfectly good and fitting for other fandons.

There is a fic where Thranduil writes to the fanfic population telling them what they can andf cannot do with his son. And I think Elrond does too... I might have to go find it.
